I‘m enjoying these books set in the War of the Spanish Succession set in the early part of the 18th Century. Plenty of action in this one, a battle, a spying mission, an escape from the Bastille and across France, and the maltreatment of a novice soldier that led to a surprise ending to the Battle 😱😢 Captain Rawson is a great character. #SeriesLoves2023 @TheSpineView

26th book finished for #JumpStart2023 @Clwojick @LizPixie

TheSpineView Great job! I need to check out this series. 💙📖📚📚📚 1w
Andrew65 @TheSpineView Quite a short series, only 5 books and they are quick reads. 1w
Ruthiella Sounds like fun. And only five books makes it approachable! 👍 1w
Andrew65 @Ruthiella They are quick reads too. Not high brow historical fiction, light and fun reads. (edited) 6d

Time for some historical fiction, with the next book in the Captain Rawson Series #SeriesLove2023 This covers the European war of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th Century. Captain Rawson was introduced in the last book and is a great character, both spy and soldier. @TheSpineView

Reading #clarissa - each letter of the epistolary novel on the day it was written - for the first time.
This is the 1950 Modern Library edition. I collect the old MLs, because of course I do.

@Lcsmcat

LeahBergen I have this edition, too. It‘s abridged, isn‘t it? 3w
Tamra I‘m one of those weird people who usually like the smell of old books. 😜 3w
Aimeesue @LeahBergen It is abridged. I'm going back and forth between an unabridged ebook and the ML. Most of what was taken out seems to be Richardson's crazy long chapter/ letter summaries and his later "additions." Editorial choices are very interesting. 3w

Aimeesue @Tamra This one certainly does have that Olde Booke scent! I just love the old Modern Library editions. (edited) 3w
LeahBergen @Aimeesue Ah, that‘s interesting! 3w
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I didn't think my arthritic wrists would be up to holding up an unabridged physical copy for a whole year. This seemed a suitable compromise. 😉 3w
LeahBergen Ha! These old wrists may be switching over to that edition, too. 😆 3w
Leftcoastzen I love them too! 3w
Aimeesue @Leftcoastzen They're the perfect size, and so well made! I get so excited when I find one that still has it's dust jacket 😂 3w
Lcsmcat I‘ve got the Modern Library edition too, but am reading from an unabridged eBook. I might have to join you in going back and forth. 3w
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat It'll be interesting to see what was cut! 3w

Bought this one for research and would have preferred a slightly different layout, but overall interesting and nuanced.

I really enjoyed Evelina and particularly appreciated the epistolary nature of the story telling. The letters from Evelina allow the reader access to her innermost thoughts and hopes and the delay in letters arriving allows for comic misunderstandings and for the story to move while at least one principal character is unaware of what is going on.

Third book finished for #NovelNovember
Really enjoyed this one set in the early part of the 18th century. A great lead character, plenty of action, suspense and great story telling.
Can‘t wait to get to the next book in the series.
