There have been multiple intriguing trailers over the past week or so (esp. LOTR, House of the Dragons). Today the trailer for Del Toro's take on Pinocchio was released. I love Del Toro's movies & having read the Collodi novel several years ago I can imagine why he'd be tempted to tackle it. But this got me thinking: if you could have a director of your choice do a dark/unusual take on a fairy tale, what would you choose?👇

vivastory Personally, I'd love to see Bong Joon-ho's take on Hansel & Gretel. Link to Del Toro trailer:

Reggie After seeing Nope today, Jordan Peele. Have you seen it yet, Scott? I have a lot of thoughts. 1. It‘s the first movie that wasn‘t based on a book that I thought I would have enjoyed the book way more. Also, Jordan Peele IS a writer. There‘s just some stuff in here that makes you think of all kinds of literary devices. Tell me what you think when you see it, please. 4mo

vivastory @Reggie I'm going to see it tomorrow afternoon! I'll tag you afterwards with my thoughts. I'm looking forward to it. Speaking of movies, what has been your favorite movie released this year? 4mo
Reggie @vivastory honestly, my two movie experiences this year have been Black Phone and Nope. I saw St.Maud last night which I loved and tonight I‘m gonna see Incantations on Netflix. I‘ve been rewatching a lot of old stuff on Shudder. They have a lot of John Carpenter good stuff on there. And Tubi has the Jawses. Jaw‘s? Lol I saw the new Chainsaw on Netflix. Chainsaw and the latest Halloween, they made me want to root for the killer. 4mo
vivastory @Reggie I have been meaning to check out St Maud. I've heard great things about it! I was unaware of Incantations, but I'm adding it to my list. It looks interesting. Man, I really liked the '18 Halloween but Halloween Kills was a disaster. If I had taken a shot every time someone said, “Evil dies tonight“ I would have been passed out 10 minutes into the movie, lol. If you get a chance, check out Everything Everywhere etc. It's my fave so far 4mo

#OnThisDay in 1881 Carlo Collodi's The Story of a Puppet began serialization in Giornale per i bambini. Two years later, the full story was published in novel form as Adventures of Pinocchio. Translated into over 250 languages, it is likely one of the best selling books of all time. Numerous adaptations have graced stage and screen, including (of course) the Disney film which became the first animated film to win an Academy Award. #HistoryGetsLIT

On the last day of the month, I finished reading January‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2022! As with other classic fairytales (think Grimm‘s), there are many lessons that are learned at a heavy cost. Not fun and I‘m glad I didn‘t read this as a kid!😅 But I‘m glad I read it now. Thanks for this pick @TheBookHippie 👍🏽 3/5⭐️ #SerialReader

The story of a wooden puppet who yearns to be a real boy came to life in this 1988 edition through the detailed magnificent illustrations of Roberto Innocenti. It is a much darker version than Disney, and I am looking forward to the Del Toro film, as I think he is a master of showcasing a vision of a story. Once again, thank you @TheBookHippie for this selection. #childrensclassicread2022

Finally I read this classic tale of a puppet! It‘s dark & humorous I don‘t think it‘s suitable for kids. But I like the vivid imagination, sarcasm & message encoded in this. There were so many versions. I read it in kindle and some parts I listen to this audiobook.

I did enjoy using Serial Reader for the first time in quite a while but didn‘t do much better in keeping up with the issues. (Maybe because I didn‘t want to come back to the story.) I‘m going to try to choose another serial to read. #ChildrensClassicRead2022

The story was weird and middling, as expected. The illustrations in this edition, collected from six or seven versions published in various countries over the years, are impressive. This is the disturbing scene in which the Blue Fairy calls in a flock of woodpeckers to trim Pinocchio‘s nose.
#ChildrensClassicRead2022 @TheBookHippie

ravenlee I always hated the Disney movie (actually, I didn‘t like most Disney movies until I was an adult because I found them terrifying. Cinderella, Robin Hood, and the Aristocats are the only exceptions I recall), but, like Peter Pan, quite a bit of the weird/objectionable stuff is in the source material. 10mo

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from the original version. I‘m not surprised that it‘s a bit heavy handed and moralistic. I was pleasantly surprised by how funny this was, it would make a good play. Overall I‘m a little underwhelmed. #ChildrensClassicRead2022 @TheBookHippie #BBRC Middle Grade Anthropomorphic Published Before 2010 @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan I fell that way about most classics that have been Disneyized. They seem very different from what someone grew up with. I made it a point when I still worked with children that each year we would read a retelling, and an original. We never got to Pinocchio. I tried to put in on the Read for a Lifetime list because of the new movie. I might try that again since the movie got pushed. 10mo

I'm embarrassed to be panning a children's classic but here we are 😆 I never liked the Disney version of Pinocchio either, & am generally ill-disposed to talking dolls, puppets, & marionettes. Get away! The original is pretty sadistic & violent, & is clearly a moralistic fable. There's very little joy or delight. I ploughed through every Serial Reader issue with the grim forbearance of young me going through my homework. #ChildrensClassicRead2022

batsy I'm glad to have read it though because I've only seen bits of the Disney cartoon and read the short/abridged versions in kids' anthologies @TheBookHippie 10mo
Ast_Arslan I tried to read it when I was a kid, it was a homework given by the teacher. I cried because I hated it and my dad wrote a letter to the theacher explaining that I was in pain reading this 😱 Never finished it 10mo

lazydaizee Some original Children`s stories were really scary, not like the sort of books that are written for children these days. 10mo
batsy @lazydaizee Yes, a lot of the original fairy tales were especially dark. I think it helps when it's shorter 😅 10mo
DivineDiana Not put off. Just respect your opinion. 🙂 10mo
Karons1 Yep 👍 it‘s creepy as is that new weird film which was on sky movies 10mo
Cathythoughts I know a lot of the children‘s stories are quite violent and bloody 😬... my daughter-in-law used to change the endings when she read them to Sofia ( my granddaughter). I remember the wolf from Three Little Pigs became “ nice wolfie “ and he didn‘t blow any houses down 😂🙃 ..... And there are murders committed in some of the little bedtime songs 🤔😳... it‘s fascinating to think about it. 10mo
Cathythoughts Weila Waile is a particularly terrifying childhood song 😳 10mo
TheBookHippie Can you imagine- this was popular !!! It is so fascinating to me! I have to say the little abridged versions are what you should probably read to kids! Just wow!! Definitely creepy!!! 10mo
batsy @DivineDiana Aww thank you ☺️ 10mo
batsy @Karons1 @TheBookHippie Creepy sums it up! Didn't know there was a new movie, either but it is fascinating how it continues to be popular and was also super popular in its time. Lots to ponder! 10mo
batsy @Cathythoughts Yeah, they really are aren't they. I'm open to arguments that kids can handle a certain level of darkness provided that they can talk things through with an adult—but Pinocchio was disturbing because it felt a bit malicious and sadistic 😕 I just looked up the song, Cathy ... That's grim 😳 10mo
TheAromaofBooks It is weird to me which ones become “classics“ and which ones don't. I was okay with Pinocchio but also a little confused about what there was about it that made it “make the grade“. I actually felt that way about Peter Pan, too - I genuinely hated it when I read it for the first time last year, but it's a beloved tale by so many! 10mo
Tamra Honestly, I‘ve never heard anyone say they “liked” the story or film. 🤷🏾‍♀️ It does indeed have a creepy vibe. (edited) 10mo
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m glad to have read the original version too. Nothing like the Disney version. 10mo
batsy @TheAromaofBooks That's a good point! It is quite weird if you think about it. I'm also not a huge Peter Pan fan and found it off-putting when I was younger—it'll be interesting to find out why if I ever read it again. 10mo
batsy @Tamra It is creepy and has way too much fun with the way in which Pinocchio is molded into a good boy after all of those awful things happen. 10mo
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Absolutely different! And learning that Jiminy Cricket is a lie 😅 10mo
readordierachel I'm with you. Get away dolls 😅 10mo
readordierachel Also, him being "molded into a good boy" sounds horrifying. Yikes 10mo
LitLaur “Generally ill-disposed to talking dolls puppets & marionettes” makes me laugh. 😂 You forgot clowns and mimes. 10mo
GingerAntics Ugh 10mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it‘s amazing how violent and filled with death/murder/suicide old children‘s stories are… and we‘ve got folks worried about video games like somehow it doesn‘t all come out in the wash now that children‘s stories are now pleasant. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 10mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
batsy @readordierachel No to the dolls! 😆 And yep, it's basically Pinocchio being bad wooden toy doing bad things who must be punished until he becomes good useful boy and it was all a bit yikes 😳 10mo
batsy @LitLaur Oh god, yes! Please keep the clowns and mimes away, too 😵 10mo
Michael_Gee Yikes, that cover is creepy. 10mo
batsy @Michael_Gee Isn't it? Really captures the feel of the book, lol 10mo
Suet624 This story always gave me the creeps. I didn't know how to talk about how I felt about it as a young'un. 10mo
batsy @Suet624 Right? It was off-putting to me when I was young but didn't know why then. But just the imagery of inanimate dolls coming to life is not great 😅 10mo

I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this one. I was never a huge fan of this particular Disney movie, but I was curious to see how much the animated story had butchered its source material, as they do lol All in all, I actually really enjoyed this one. It takes Pinocchio a long time to actually change, but that seems pretty true to life! My biggest issue was the timeline seemed whack, like he would talk about things his father had⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) taught him, but wasn't he only with his father for like, a day?? 😂 Conclusion - this was a fun one, but it's possible that, for once, the Disney version actually had a more cohesive plot!

Thanks for choosing this one for #ChildrensClassicRead2022 as I don't think I would have read it otherwise @TheBookHippie

TheBookHippie I‘m so glad I finally read it as well. Probably the closest to accurate Disney I‘ve read thus far as you say. I wondered if it was in the translation or me as the plot line goes. Did we miss something? So you thinking the same is 🤷🏻‍♀️. 10mo
Cinfhen Nice use of prompt 😃 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @Allylu - I totally agree!! I especially thought having Pinocchio give in to the temptation to go to Playland after a long stretch of being really good - the point that his ultimate reward was literally within reach - felt so realistic. It's amazing how we can self-sabotage ourselves!! Also, side note, I've been using various buddy reads as an excuse to purchase these Minalima editions - they're sooo gorgeous!! I own several now! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @TheBookHippie - This was definitely a book where I double-checked to make sure I wasn't reading an abridged edition, although I do wonder if something got edited out during translation. It's funny how the translation can really impact the reading experience - for instance, I absolutely love Heidi, but read another Spyri book translated by someone else and even though the story was lovely, the writing was so clunky and awkward! 10mo
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks I love your edition! I agree about translators I have that with Russian literature. I favor a pair over all others. 10mo

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from this classic. I knew it wouldn‘t be the Disney story, but I was happy with it. I don‘t quite like the story of the naughty Pinocchio, who always make bad choices, gets into trouble but lucky enough to get out of it & be forgiven. He never learnt his lessons, in the end, he got what he wished for because he was ‘rewarded for his good heart‘. That‘s just the surface of the story, obviously it has some moral lessons for children; and it‘s said Collodi wrote it as a social commentary.

I‘ve never been particularly fond of the story of Pinocchio, but I was curious to read the original. It was an interesting combination of harsh and humorous alongside a very strong lesson to go to school and work. It got a bit repetitive with different ways for Pinocchio to fail at that lesson, but overall I enjoyed it.

This may be a choice and more child friendly ? I plan to add it to my month.

#ChildrensClassicRead2022 January

ravenlee What timing - I JUST got home from the library, where I picked up my copy of Pinocchio for next month! 11mo

tpixie @UwannaPublishme awesomeness 11mo

GingerAntics @DGRachel I was scrolling through all the different ebook options and nearly missed this, too. All of a sudden it was just, “that doesn‘t look right.” 11mo

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I don‘t think this story would work if she wrote it. It certainly would be a much different story. That‘s for sure. 11mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Gah no. Let me have my dark!! BAHAHAHAHA 11mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it might still be dark… but only in that Pinocchio would be a sexist a** who talked down to whatever woman he was in love with. Are there any women in this story? I‘m trying to think of a female character from the movie. Of course, that‘s Disney, too. 11mo

I‘m quite excited to read this!

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics ♥️😂 I do advise if your reading with kiddos read Disney ♥️ 11mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Yes this was for kids… 😵‍💫 I‘m quite excited to read it. 11mo

TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Ooooo yes that‘s on my wish list too 😂♥️♥️♥️ 11mo
GingerAntics Yeah, I‘m not sure this is kid friendly anymore. I‘m sure it was back then when an execution meant school was out and everyone came to watch. I suppose it didn‘t really bother kids because they‘d seen it before. I can‘t imagine it not messing with my head, though. 11mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘m sure that‘s true. It‘s amazing to explore these. I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed it- my black soul and all 😂🖤 It‘s interesting that this was for children. Should be lots to talk about!!! 11mo
Jess861 I think I'll read this one on my own instead of with the little guy. The Disney version scared me to death (even when I was an older kid) so I can only imagine the actual version! (edited) 11mo
TheBookHippie @Jess861 I was terrified of the Disney movie as a kid 😂the donkeys scared me. 11mo

I have my #ChildrensClassicRead2022 ALL SET TO GO!

I put together my school year reading, SundayBuddyRead and these reads in my August planning time, so I am sharing now, so you can be prepared as well if you want!

Everyone welcome to join in! I do love reading these with my coffee in the mornings. ZEN ❤ 💜

tpixie I‘m behind on the little white horse but I am enjoying it. Pinocchio will be an interesting read! 1y
tpixie You are on the ball! 1y
ravenlee Wow, you are light years ahead of me! The list looks good, with just a couple I‘ve read before (The Railway Children 😍). I wonder about the Oz book, because I‘ve never read any of the series. Maybe I‘ll queue up the first books earlier in the year. 1y

TheBookHippie @tpixie @ravenlee Who knows what the school year brings I‘d rather have all my reading figured out in all the places I read♥️😂. Plus I can watch for them as well. 1y
TheBookHippie @tpixie I think Pinocchio is not what we think I‘m excited to read it. 1y
UwannaPublishme You are sooooo organized! And you put together another stellar list. Count me in! 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1y

My current buddyread with @Sarah83 is Pinocchio in the beautiful Mina Lima Version. While I remember the core Story, there are a lot of things that are new to me as well. I might need to rewatch the Disney movie to compare it to the book!

It apparently also makes a great pillow @julesG 😁

Bargain find for my fellow book lovers! Check the clearance section at your local BoxLunch store. Mine had the Mina Lima version of Pinocchio for $7.99 (retail value $32.50), and clearance was 50% off last night, so I got this for $4.00! It‘s beautiful and interactive as all Mina Lima editions are. #bargainbook #boxlunch #pinocchio #minalima #readerfinds

Mehso-so

I looked forward to enjoy this one so much. I really thought it would be an enlightening adventure but – the translation is too old-fashioned which makes the story too lecturing for my taste.

Maybe it‘s because I grew up with „Meister Gepetto“ from the Disney adaptation but I just couldn‘t relate to the characters I met in the original book. There was so few recognition. It all felt so different.

Sorry book, I know it‘s me.

La_Cori Well, the story is full on old-fashioned morals and very different from the Disney adaptation.. add the old translation, it can be a lot to process. So don't be to hard on yourself 😉 3y
Buechersuechtling I think you‘re too kind to me. In a way I‘m disappointed by myself because I didn‘t think that I‘m such a picky reader. 😟 3y

Nothing to be happy about in terms of #EasterExtravaganza today.

Either did I start “Cloud Atlas” on audio nor start “Oathbringer”, vol. 1 as an e-book, nor continue “Pinocchio”.
And I definitely didn‘t (audio)read for an hour today. 😔

But I worked in “slices” today. Work, appointment, appointment, back to work, appointment, back to work. There wasn‘t much time left for pleasure.

😴 Need to make up for last night‘s missed sleep now. 👋🏼

Who of you does remember this cake-accident❓ @Caroline2 , @Lifeisasnap
Well, you and all the others who might have thought the same, were right.

My mother rang me yesterday to tell me how delicious that cake has been and that it has tasted completely different from the ones she usually bakes.

She said, it was really good and reported that my father almost inhaled it. 😂 She said, she had to be fast to at least get a little corner. ☺️

Caroline2 Ahhh, that‘s lovely to hear!! 😊 Alls well that ends well. 😉 3y

If any of my German followers are interested:

„Milde Zephirwinde” is a pleonasm since „Zephirwinde“ by definition are mild winds that come from a western direction.

“When the book is published, I think back to the great friend of youth, Dr. Ernst Geradaus, who was once in the lime spring days, as mild ephemeral winds from the flowers of the Arno city flooded us with scents, first heard the German Bengele and took charge of the edition with great love.”

⬆️⬆️⬆️ 😯 I needed to read the German paragraph 3 times before I even was capable of having a faint idea of what he‘s talking about. 😱

Litsy did it again. #LitsyMagic Less than 15 minutes ago I was talking to @La_Cori about “Pinocchio” being a book by an Italian author and that, by the way, the plot is being very different from the story Disney tells in his film.

It was that fact that made me search for it in my online library‘s catalogue – and look what I found and immediately borrowed‼️😃 #BlameItOnLitsy

The only question left is: When will I start reading all my newly ins❓

La_Cori Well done!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 3y
Buechersuechtling @La_Cori Thank you‼️🙇🏽‍♀️ Meanwhile I‘m really curious. 3y

DAY 2: Le avventure di Pinocchio

Buechersuechtling Obviously today is the day where it‘s official that I am a low-brow. It might not be that far-fetched but until now I wasn‘t aware that “Pinocchio” is a book. I only know the film Walt Disney made. 😊🤦🏽‍♀️ 3y
La_Cori @Buechersuechtling the book is very popular in Italy, specially in Tuscany (my region) because the author was from around here.. so it's a recommended reading in mostly every primary school. By the way, the Disney movie is veeeeery different from the book.. 3y
