I found this illustrated edition of Pinocchio (circa 1944) a while back, and figured this would be a quick weekend read. I might watch the movie after this and compare-so far, it's vastly different (per every other Disney adaptation, but still)!

IamIamIam @ValerieAndBooks HAHA, definitely not!!! I think I'm okay with all the changes Disney made on this! Pinocchio is just awful!!! 😖 3w

Got this edition in Florence at the Accademia! Disney made Pinocchio into a Swiss or German or something. Italians are proud that Pinocchio is from Florence! Anyway, read this one after bringing it back. Darker than I expected, which I guess I should know given that Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen get dark. Very frustratingly stupid marionette boy but he does FINALLY figure himself out of course.

This was nothing like the Disney movie. When reading it I had to put it into perspective regarding when it was written. Overall enjoyable story. I found Pinocchio a little annoying and the drawings were slightly creepy but still a classic. #catsoflitsy

Finally got my collection of antique books out at the new house (I had temporarily misplaced them and our current project of organizing the unfinished portion of the basement helped me find them 🙈). Some came from my grandma via her stepdad‘s first wife, circa 1910s. Others we got from my husband‘s relative who died and nobody wanted the books. Obviously I did!!

Mdargusch Beautiful vignette! Glad you found them. 12mo

My son wanted a break from Harry Potter (😭I don't want to pressure him...), and he picked this out at the library as our next chapter book. Fascinating and weird so far. Pinocchio is a little brat, seriously.

La_Cori it's one of the very first books that I've read (and one of my favourite in my childhood) but yes, Pinocchio is a real brat! 2y
readinginthedark @La_Cori I guess I never read it as a child, but I hadn't realized that before now. We're enjoying it, though! 2y
JillR We've got the Michael Morpurgo version but I CANNOT persuade the kids to let me read it to them for some reason! 2y
readinginthedark @JillR I have a hard time convincing mine to read chapter books with me, but he picked this one out himself! And the chapters are only 2-4 pages long (big pages) with illustrations in-between, so I think that's helping. 2y
JillR @readinginthedark my youngest often turns down chapter books but can usually be persuaded if illustrations are involved... 2y

Linear Dang I don't know why that didn't come to mind but it's a good one 2y
4thhouseontheleft @Linear Thanks! This is from a beautiful illustrated edition that hangs out on my daughter's bookshelf, and was the first thing I could think of that wasn't a butterfly! (I wanted to do something different). And, I hate spiders. 😆 2y
Linear LOL spiders aren't bugs anyway they're arachnids 2y
LaraReads Excellent choice! 2y
4thhouseontheleft @Linear I guess it depends on how you define "bugs", since both insects and arachnids are Arthropods! I tend to lean towards the broader definition of bug, that includes more than just insects. ? 2y

I read this with the little man. I liked it, but it wasn't what I expected. I generally feel that way about original fairy tales and kids' stories. They're all just a little more violent and intense than I want them to be. We'll see what Walter thinks when he's old enough to read it on his own.

This was definitely an interesting read. Much darker and crazier than the Disney version. While I did enjoy the darker tones and humorous writing. I seriously disliked Pinocchio as a character. The entire book is just a cycle of Pinocchio getting in trouble, "learning his lesson," and then getting in trouble again. I wouldn't mind it so much, if he didn't go on long soliloquies about learning from his mistake each time. #audiobook #classics

Angry reading of Pinokio. My 5yo was angry I wouldn't let him go out and play in the snow so he went to bed to read. This so reminds me of me when I was a child. I remember not being allowed to go on a school trip and spending all three days of the trip reading locked in my room. Mind you, I shared a room with my older brother, so he had to sleep in the living room.

Collodi's picaresque novel at times reads like a collaboration between Lewis Carroll & Salvador Dali. Like many fairytales, it includes moral lessons. However, there is a surprising amount of violence and morbid material, that it is difficult imagining children reading it. For fans of dark fairytales & folklore.

LeahBergen How was the Eco introduction? 3y
vivastory @LeahBergen Very brief and informative. According to him, Pinocchio is only second to Mickey Mouse in terms of popularity. Interesting info. 3y

I read this for a children's lit class. It was a good story though overly preachy at times. I think it may also heavily depend on the translator. I liked the story but was annoyed at some of the heavy moralizing. A child probably wouldn't notice it as much as they would see the adventure.
