Before this, the only book I'd read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was Mexican Gothic and they were very, very different stories. It seems the author enjoys trying out different genres, which is kind of cool.
This felt like sort of a Jane Austen-ish period drama with magic, and it was a lot of fun!

I never have any idea what to expect from this author. But she tells good stories and keeps me engaged so that's a win. This is fantasy and a bit of romance. It was good. I can't decide if I like this cover.

One thing I like about Silvia Moreno-Garcia is that she writes in different genres and her characters are interesting and not conventionally beautiful. This book is fantasy, romance, drama, and I get such a Victorian vibe from it. It‘s about unrequited love, lust, magic, social class conventions..I could go on and on. Plus, I actually liked the ending on this one.

This cover ❤️. I set this aside to get some other reading done for some book clubs and I finished this last night and LOVED it. I think it‘s pretty amazing Silvia writes such different genres of books, so far I‘ve liked her writing style no matter the genre. 5 ⭐️

I finally read this (she writes so fast I had two books by her on my eARC backlog! I made myself read this one before Velvet Was the Night).

It's like... alt history or just nameless vague regency plus a little bit of telekinetic magic. ...

ReadingEnvy No Mexican folklore or mythology elements that I can identify although some reviews have labeled it as "telenovela" - perhaps only because of who the author is? It has quite a few similarities to Shades of Milk and Honey but the pacing is quite slow - I found myself skimming to the parts between Nina and Hector...↘️ 3mo
ReadingEnvy Here's my confession - there's space between expectation and experience. I'm so used to her usual mode of taking a strong female, uprooting her, and placing her into a story that is somehow colored by Mexican or Central American mythology or folklore that I kind of felt like this story wasn't as interesting without that component. There is a woman, Nina, who is uprooted, and has been a bit of an outcast because of her telekinetic abilities. ↘️ 3mo
ReadingEnvy She bonds with a performer who has similar abilities and hopes to marry him, but his story has a lot of secrets that get in the way.

My second confession - I thought The Beautiful Ones would be some kind of supernatural being. I'm kind of bummed that they aren't.

In the society itself are the "beautiful ones" who seem to be old money types who don't actually have money, but they are well-mannered and still hold a place in society. ↘️
3mo
See All 8 Comments
ReadingEnvy She has this blood but was raised outside the city and starts out with her cousin who is supposed to help her find a husband. But nobody wants her to use her abilities in public! And okay I love telekinetic stuff in books (The Girl with the Silver Eyes was my absolutely favorite book as a kid) but it's a little too infrequent in this book that I found myself skimming to those parts, since the rest of it is paced pretty slowly. ↘️ 3mo
ReadingEnvy Some exciting things that happen, like a duel, just held no interest to me whatsoever.

One thing I really liked, and I hope we see this again from the author, was her omniscient narrator voice - the point of view doesn't switch but we are able to see the thinking of more than one character, and I really like being able to do this. ↘️
3mo
ReadingEnvy The way she wrote it, it added a lot to the story, leaving the reader with a more complete picture than the characters sometimes had. Still, the other issues like pacing and lack of development make it at the bottom of the author's oeuvre for me.

Thanks to the publisher for granting me access to this title via Edelweiss. It came out April 27!

Cathythoughts Another amazing cover ( I got Mexican Gothic for the cover … impulse buy 😊😂 (edited) 3mo

#BookReport - Finished 5 books this week, 2 were audio. All were very good! I‘ve officially finished all of the books recommended to me by BookRiot this quarter.

Finished a book last night and couldn‘t check any audiobooks out, so I‘m not currently reading anything.

#WeeklyForecast - Will start Pretty Things on audio this week. Not sure which book I‘ll pick up, but it‘ll probably be one of these. Or not 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cinfhen Ohhhhh!!! Awesome week!! Ariadne and TOBG are both on my forecast this week 💕💕 4mo

#BookSpin

I wasn‘t sure what to expect when I picked this up. Her books are all so different from each other. This one is a historical fiction, with romance, heartbreak and magical realism.

It was a bit slow and not a lot happened but about 100 pages in, I was hooked and was dedicated to the characters. I needed to see what happened.

A book I‘d definitely recommend but note, IT IS NOTHING LIKE MEXICAN GOTHIC!

phantomx The Beautiful Ones is one of earlier novels, before Mexican Gothic was published. Her newest novel, which will be published soon, it'll also be a historical fiction novel. 5mo
Laughterhp @phantomx Oh really? Was it re-published? I thought it came out in April of this year. 5mo

phantomx @Laughterhp yeah it's a reprint of the book, the cover is a newer design. Her other book, Certain Dark Things will be reprinted in October 5mo

I loved this story! Nina is such a great character with a lot of spunk and intelligence. Hector is a swoony character, I felt like I learned more about him in part II. Valerie is so vile and wicked, she is the perfect villianess throughpit the story. Also, I enjoyed the style of writing Moreno-Garcia used, it made the story feel like a play and a literary classic.

I received this book from NetGalley. I requested it because I love how the author writes. I like how she doesn‘t write for one genre. This one is a magic realism/romance. One allusionist meets another, and there is a love triangle and jealousy involved.

I just? Everything about this was perfect?

This story is the perfect combination of Pride and Prejudice-esque angst, magic, and high society drama. The first part was a bit slow, but the slow burn was worth it. I will read literally anything Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes, and I'm pretty sure it'll be perfect every single time.

I say perfect a lot in this review but I have no other words.

The Illusionist meets Jane Austen. Described as a novel of manners, but equally a novel of errors. A performer returns to see his first love, now married, only to court her cousin by marriage instead to stay close to her. I loved the blending of fictional historical setting with speculative elements (telekinetic abilities), the extremely imperfect characters, the lush world building, and the voice. Nothing like Mexican Gothic, but so so good.

Antonia Beaulieu is attending her first Grand Season in the city of Losail where she meets a magnetic man named, Hecto Aurvey. They share the same talent, telekinesis.

This story reminded me a lot of Austen‘s work. It‘s in the same time period as those books but is slightly different. I really enjoyed this slow paced novel that had me unable to put the book down. The characters are so well written and formed that I felt I knew them.

I definitely thought this was going to be more fantasy based but I was so pleasantly surprised with this book. It had a Cruel Intentions feel and rich, vibrant characters. I got quite caught up in all the drama and the romance. The ending was extremely satisfying and I definitely will be rereading this in the future.

I sure have been bailing on a lot of books lately! But this one was only a random pick from my library so I had something to read on my break.

This is the 2nd book by this author I've tried and I had the same experience twice: the book sounds really cool but it just doesn't grab me. The other one I tried on audio and I thought it was the narrator I didn't like but I think now it's just this author's style or voice that doesn't do it for me.

I was astounded by the writing, though I had been expecting something different from the blurb. I was assuming I would be reading a paranormal romance, but instead I was greeted with something that felt like a historical romance set in a different yet familiar world. This story is also very character-driven, which was a pleasant change from my usual readings.

Antonina Beaulieu is having trouble attracting a suitable offer of marriage so she is sent to stay with her cousin and his wife, a leading socialite, in the city in the hope she will find a husband. There she meets Hector Auvray, a renowned telekinetic performer, & falls in love. But you know it isn‘t that simple, that‘s just where the story really gets going. Moreno-Garcia‘s writing is exquisite & I really enjoyed this book.
