So disappointing. I thought I‘d love this book but it was arduous. Yes the mother was a nutter but a lot of religious zealots are. Also didn‘t like the stories running parallel. Were they meant to be like the bible parables? Anyway not for me ⭐️⭐️

I can't thing of anything orange that's more terrifying.

Young Jeannette adores her church and her role as powerful sermonizer, but her love of women doesn‘t fit so neatly into her mother‘s idea of success.
Read July 6-13
Book 38/55
I personally loved this one. Near-absent father, overbearing mother, a small community...and poor can‘t-fit-in-anywhere Jeanette. This book has wit and a heroine who doesn‘t change who she is just to make others comfortable. 161/1,001 #1001Books #ReadingRainbow
Well, I‘m not sure whether to say this was an appropriate mother‘s day read or not. 🤔
All family relationships are on the messy spectrum, though some are more destructive than others.
I suspect I grabbed another dysfunctional family read.......
'There are women in the world. There are men in the world. And there are beasts...And beasts are crafty. They disguise themselves like you and I.'
Relaxing with a view after an interview!
Four books featuring lesbian characters that aren't Fun Home, but fantastic nonetheless. The only one I have yet to read is the Highsmith, which I suspect I will love as much as the others. I will also be reading more Sarah Waters this year. Tipping the Velvet was one of my favorite books of 2018.

This was an interesting book. I didn‘t love it but didn‘t hate it either. I liked the idea but found it a little disjointed.

Jeanette Winterson's fictionalised account of growing up
@Kalalalatja @Cinfhen
I think I would have liked this book more if the story had been more grounded. I think the plot and the characters really got lost in the metaphorical language and it got hard to keep up with. Interesting message about religion and sexual preference, but I would have liked something a little more solid. #booked2018 #lgbtqiamaincharacter
Oranges are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson
3 Stars.
It was *okay* but dragged a lot, and ultimately the only one I cared about was Elsie
A short little book that packs some powerful stuff. From what I‘ve read, it‘s a novel that is somewhat autobiographical. Jeanette is coming of age in an extremely evangelical household and realizing she is a lesbian. Lots of hard to read passages that are cut beautifully with humor. I enjoyed the way fairy tales were woven in as well. Fantastic writing.
This ends my outdoor reading for #24in48 because omg the mosquitos.

Here are some books from my current TBR, all written by women, and all to be read in July and August. I‘m really excited to get to all of these!

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is characterized as fiction, but the story itself is very much autobiographical. The protagonist is adopted by a very religious family in Northern England, where she becomes part of a wake-up movement, and later on discovers herself as a lesbian, tearing the family and her inner circle apart. The book was beautifully written, and I quite enjoyed this coming of age story.

I rarely read jacket copy, so all I knew going in was that this book is a lesbian classic. I wasn't prepared for the deep dive into British evangelical life, or the semi-Arthurian stories that run alongside young Jeanette's own tale, or the semi-autobiographical nature of the text.
It's fascinating, all of it, and I'm glad I finally pulled if off La TBR.
I got reading snacks at Shoppers' post-Easter sale! These Lindt bunnymobiles were so cute I bought one for my mum and one for me. They were $3 each because Shoppers DOES NOT mess around with their holiday clear-outs.
My early bedtime reads include a lesbian classic, some shojo manga, and more X-Men.

For today's #happinessisresistance entry of "take pride in yourself", I have chosen the first book featuring a lgbtq character that I read. The Resistance Bookclub takes pride in championing queer, poc, female and neurodivergent authors.

I loved parts of this book. It was darkly humorous but also somewhat sad or depressing and Winterson's early life was certainly a fascinating thing to read about. However I didn't love the long metaphoric passages which made the story disjointed and I didn't always see the point of. I've got her second memoir written more recently in my bedside table. It will be interesting to compare the two.
I'm taking this title literally with some non-oranges fruit for a summery breakfast. It's getting very warm here, Christmas must be just around the corner.
Do you think my bedside reading pile has gotten a little out of hand?
First book finished for #AutumnReadathon—ORANGES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT by Jeanette Winterson! This was for the “Book with a Young Female Protagonist” prompt. Still in a book coma after finishing it. 😭
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

I have both a BA and and MA in English and American Literature, so I've read a lot of books, some, like this, were forced upon me by university.
I can usually understand why certain books are considered staple reading in higher education, but the inevitable inclusion of this still baffles me.
I can't stand this book. I find this so drab. Maybe I was just in a stressed place when I read it, but I don't think I'll ever come back to it again. Sorry!

Some of my favorite recent reads by LGBTQ+ authors. I would recommend all three! #ReadingRainbow
And since we're talking about oranges, this one was even less memorable than Five Quarters on the Orange. Slightly too much sex for my tastes. I don't recall much now, was it about being queer? That's fine by me - I read #diverse books and love them (review of Felix Yz soon to come BTW). It was just the presentation. I strongly dislike books verging on the vulgar.
