This guy is obsessed with how tall everyone is! (Should I keep track of everyone‘s height and use it to make on those logic puzzles? Anna is taller than Mimo but shorter than Pino...etc.)
Imagine being 17 and having the lives of entire families in your hands. Pino Lella is a real life hero, who selflessly laid his life on the line again and again to guide Jews out of Nazi occupied Italy into Switzerland by treacherous mountain trails. And then was forced to serve & spend every day with the enemy, all for the sake of the greater good. This is the reason I love reading WWII stories, they shine a beacon of light in extreme darkness.
This is Pino Lella, 17 year old hero of this book.It is a story that was almost never told, and it is an amazing one! The author heard of the young man‘s exploits at a dinner party, and traveled to Italy to meet him. Pino led Jews across the Alps to safety during WWII. He then worked as a chauffeur/spy for a high ranking Nazi General in Italy. It is a page turner! Soon to be a movie. Great story, but alas not great writing. Still works for me. 🙂
WOW. I'm so in awe of this story. I was lost in it immediately and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I finished it in 4 days. This is an absolute must read for any history and intrigue lover. I'll suggest this true story to any and everyone I possibly can. I finished it not 5 minutes ago and I'm still, nearly speechless.
READ THIS BOOK!
The beginning was slow. I almost stopped reading it a few times until I saw a review here that it gets better. I think the story needed to be told. It seems incredulous. I thought the writing was hard to follow when it came to the details. It definitely gives you a feeling of wartime during WW2 in northern Italy.
The characters are my favourite part of this masterpiece! Pino is admirable, truly. A remarkable writing style, and I especially loved the switches between third person limited and third person objective. Really put into perspective the harsh reality of war torn worlds.
2019 Book 16: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely beautiful and at times, heartbreaking story of WW2 Italy. Pino Lella might be one of my favorite characters, even though he‘s an actual person! The images of the atrocities of war blended with his love for Anna made for one of my best reads this year.
World War II stories always intrigue me, and this is no different. This story takes place in Italy, which is different than any other novel I‘ve read, and is based on the true story of a young Italian man. It started out a little slow but has gotten to the point of being un-put-downable.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Based on a true story of Pino Lella- an Italian young man who rescued Refugees out during the height of WW2 and drives around the top general under Hitler. I don‘t believe everything as the author write this as historical fiction, so have to just go with it for what it is.
Starting this one tonight for my family book club. It is my mom‘s pick. Zelda was not happy about me talking her picture. #schnauzersoflitsy
Library book sale! All these for $7! Several of these will be going in my classroom.
3. ⛰⛰⛰ At least. The last time I tried to count I could read from what I own for 10+ years. And I read around 100 books a year.
4. My hammock when weather permits. If not my favorite spot on the couch.
5. In historical fiction try Beneath A Scarlet Sky.
If you‘re searching a feel-good book this isn‘t it. When you turn the last page, you‘ll have a heavy heart & more than likely, tears in your eyes. However, you will have a better understanding of WW2 in Italy, a better appreciation for our lives, & a more grateful heart. This heart-wrenching, eye-opening story about young Pino Lella will have you experiencing all the emotions. It‘s a historical fiction novel based off a true story. 10/10 ❤️

I loved this book. The story was fabulous and that it was a true story just made it that much better. You will need plenty of tissues for this one. Well worth it. 😥
Although I do agree with other reviewers that this book was not well written and was much overdone in many places, I will give it a pick. I did learn some things about a part of WW2 that I have not read much about—the experience in Italy.
My dear, sweet friend Misty sent me these awesome books from my TBR! It was such a lovely surprise to find on my porch. The perfect button has found its home on my library of Congress bag that I take to class and the magnet and notepad are already on the fridge so they aren‘t pictured. That magnet says “a well-read woman is a dangerous creature” and I adore it all! Thank you so much @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks ♥️♥️♥️.
Pino Lella, a teenage boy from Milan, Italy, was instrumental in helping the Allies defeat the Germans in WWII. Based on a true story, this incredible tale of heroism, heartache, and triumph is told beautifully and emotionally.
I highly recommend getting lost in the pages of this book!
This was a truly exceptional book and one of the best ones I‘ve ever read about the WWII ! Full of feelings and based on a true story🤓 Also the first book I‘ve read about the situation in Italy during this time. Totally recommend that!
