I've realized that I ought to have read Dickens in order of publication.
It seems I've already enjoyed the best of his works, and now the remaining ones feel insufficient, boring and lacklustre.

I thought Oliver Twist was rather dull, filled with mostly unlikable characters, and its progress so slowly that I had to force myself to read.
The ending however, did redeem some of my faith in Dickens

Meet Oliver, we adopted him last night from one of our local rescues. He‘s slowly settling in. The name inspiration was not the book but my husband‘s grad school mentor, Dr. Oliver Smithies. While my husband was in grad school Oliver won the Nobel Prize. His mentorship & guidance made my husband the scientist he is today. Oliver had such a huge impact on our lives, so we found a way to honor him.

This is still one of my favorite Dickens‘ novels.

Not gonna lie - my mind drifted a lot listening to this one, but my quest to add more classics to my audiobook repertoire continues 🙂

Th sun - the bright sun, that brings back , not light alone, but new life, and hope, and freshness to man - burst open the crowded city in clear and radiant glory.

Having stalled on The Pickwick Papers, I wasn‘t sure how I‘d like OT. I loved the combination of social justice and melodrama. The characterization of Fagin is definitely heavy handed and problematic; that aside I found this a surprisingly engrossing read.

I‘m reading Oliver Twist for book club. Saw this sponsored ad come up in my Facebook feed.

I‘m not sure I even knew there was a season one!

A 3.5 hour audiobook adaptation that has a complete cast of characters, sound effects, and exciting action and dialogue. Love Brian Cox as Fagin !

This would be a great tale of sadness and triumph, well-written and interesting in details of a historic nature, except it feels as if we are traveling back to this time of inhumanity towards the poor and vulnerable.

Finally finishing this very long audiobook! It is one of Dickens earlier novels and is more heavy handed (imo) than later novels. Its easy to see that Dickens is playing with reader emotions to create sympathy for social justice issues that were important to him - but this does lead to some two dimensional characters. And of course the appalling caricature of Fagin, embellishing an existing anti semitism. ⬇️

With a propulsive narrative voice, Oliver Twist is immediately engaging. A large cast of memorable characters have remained with me since finishing: especially Artful Dodger, Fagin, Mr. Grimwig, Bill Sikes. As I mentioned in a prior post about OT, Bill Sikes is one of the greatest villains that I have ever encountered, I also mentioned that there are some jarring elements in the novel, which can be found in the wikipedia entry on how Fagin (cont)

Audiowalking with Oliver Twist over the weekend. This neighbourhood is a lot older than mine so I was enjoying the different architecture and trees.
This is about my 8th Dickens novel I think, up to chapter 7 and my god there‘s not a glimmer of hope to be found for poor Oliver Twist. I knew it would be sad, but 😫😫😫 Suits the chilly weather though!

Martin Jarvis is a marvellous narrator of Dickens. Well, really of anything.
The well-known story of Oliver is heart-wrenching really. Dickens shows such sympathy for the plight of women and children in his time. Women, in particular, are shown to have so few real choices and to be mostly subjected to the will of men. Poor Nancy. And Dick. I do have a soft spot for the artful dodger though, due to Jack Wild‘s performance.

Oliver Twist is Dickens' second published work, initially released as a serial. This is a novel that reads like a classic serial & I can picture in my mind where the cliffhangers must have been. Widely considered to be Dickens' foremost social novel, OT tackles judicial corruption, child labor & exploitation, & laws targeting the financially vulnerable. My first #weeklyreport in awhile. This week I read 3 books: 2 graphic novels & a novella. I also started the tagged book Saturday night & am now about 3/4 through it. Have quite a few thoughts on it. I can see the flaws, but I'm really engrossed. Non-reading, yet book highlight of the week is my first Macmillan Collector's Library. I love these small editions with their uniform, yet appealing, light blue colors & wonderful designs

I loved the themes throughout the book, particularly those of generosity & kindness. I thought the plot made sense, & didn‘t seem too far-fetched, but was still filled with hardships. Similarly, Dickens‘ writing made the novel truly stand out. While I can see how some readers might find it a little slow, I think the writing made up for the slower pace. I was very pleasantly surprised by Oliver Twist, and I‘m hoping to read more by Dickens soon!

Another Dewey‘s 24 Hour Readathon is done. I had some obligations, so I couldn‘t devote all the time as I would have liked to, but I had a great time anyway. I read nineteen chapters of Oliver Twist, and enjoyed interacting with the other readers.

I love it when restaurants use books in their decor.

This somehow got really confusing about 3/4 of the way in; there are some melodramatic intricacies that seemed to come out of nowhere. But I read ahead in Serial Reader to finish this and found the rest of it a digestible read, so a Pick it is.

I found this set of books, some the works , some Christmas stories.. either way there are 11 books here- not in the greatest condition but I found them 2 weeks ago and walked away because of their condition and regretted it since and finally we t back today and the lady still had them so I purchased them .. all 11 for $20 . Published in 1865 some of them- even if they don‘t appreciate I still have my antique books 😍

After one hell of a day, I stopped by the used bookstore near Maya‘s school and found a few classics I‘ve been meaning to add to my collection, before heading to school pick up!

Am reading this now. Poor Oliver!

No guesses here. It‘s a pick! Great story wonderfully told. Most people know the story so I‘ll say as Dickens‘s second novel, his style is clearly evident, satire, humour, exaggeration, and of course caricature.

I‘m enjoying this reading, but Charles was this absolutely necessary? One must remember how much of the world despised the Irish at one time and make sure as a people we must always stand on the side of the oppressed. 🇮🇪 #shouldertoshoulder
