This would be a great tale of sadness and triumph, well-written and interesting in details of a historic nature, except it feels as if we are traveling back to this time of inhumanity towards the poor and vulnerable.

Finally finishing this very long audiobook! It is one of Dickens earlier novels and is more heavy handed (imo) than later novels. Its easy to see that Dickens is playing with reader emotions to create sympathy for social justice issues that were important to him - but this does lead to some two dimensional characters. And of course the appalling caricature of Fagin, embellishing an existing anti semitism. ⬇️

Centique The depiction of the darker side of London and the plight of the poor remains eye opening and fascinating - and, as always, Dickens creates so many colourful secondary characters that are entertaining and unforgettable. 5mo
Ruthiella I agree, it‘s very heavy handed. I love Dickens‘ completed novels, but this one is lower on the list for that reason. 5mo
Centique @Ruthiella yes! Great Expectations and Bleak House remain my favourites… and probably David Copperfield too. 5mo

Ruthiella Great Expectations and Bleak House are at the top of my list too. For some reason I don‘t love David Copperfield, however. Or rather I think I don‘t like him as an adult. I do love all the side characters, however. “The donkeys Janet!” 😂 (edited) 5mo
Centique @Ruthiella i had to add David Copperfield solely for my love of Miss Betsey and Mr Dick and his never ending memoir that he is trying to write. And you reminded me about the blasted donkey! 😂😂 5mo
Lcsmcat This was my first Dickens and sparked a life-long appreciation of his writing. I was 8, so I didn‘t “get” everything. But I loved his humor, and totally fell in love with little Oliver! 5mo
Centique @Lcsmcat how amazing that you read this at 8! I was probably about that age when i read A Christmas Carol but thats a much easier read. (Probably a condensed version as well) So wonderful to discover his colorful characters when youre young and your mind is wide open and impressionable. Which is your favourite Dickens so far? 5mo
Lcsmcat @Centique A bit like being asked to name your favorite child. 😀 David Copperfield is up there now because I recently reread it before reading Demon Copperhead. Tale of Two Cities will always have a place in my romantic heart, and Pickwick Papers are such fun. I guess it varies with my mood. 5mo
batsy I've been trying to get over my Dickens resistance. It's partly because I've read this twice for school and yes, it's flawed in all the ways you've mentioned. I'm also not a fan of GE. But I do love A Christmas Carol. I read abridged versions of DC and Two Cities as a kid and perhaps I should start with those now. 5mo
Centique @batsy i can understand the resistance! He may not be your cup of tea ultimately - because i know its not the length of his novels - you read the Russians after all! Yes maybe DC or Two Cities - although its been twenty years since i read Two Cities…. 😂 5mo

With a propulsive narrative voice, Oliver Twist is immediately engaging. A large cast of memorable characters have remained with me since finishing: especially Artful Dodger, Fagin, Mr. Grimwig, Bill Sikes. As I mentioned in a prior post about OT, Bill Sikes is one of the greatest villains that I have ever encountered, I also mentioned that there are some jarring elements in the novel, which can be found in the wikipedia entry on how Fagin (cont)

vivastory & other Jewish characters were portrayed. There's no doubt in my mind that as a work of art Great Expectations is better, however as a social protest novel with staying power that transcends the merely didactic Oliver Twist is a worthwhile read.
Book 15 of #MidwayBOTY23

Audiowalking with Oliver Twist over the weekend. This neighbourhood is a lot older than mine so I was enjoying the different architecture and trees.
This is about my 8th Dickens novel I think, up to chapter 7 and my god there‘s not a glimmer of hope to be found for poor Oliver Twist. I knew it would be sad, but 😫😫😫 Suits the chilly weather though!

Martin Jarvis is a marvellous narrator of Dickens. Well, really of anything.
The well-known story of Oliver is heart-wrenching really. Dickens shows such sympathy for the plight of women and children in his time. Women, in particular, are shown to have so few real choices and to be mostly subjected to the will of men. Poor Nancy. And Dick. I do have a soft spot for the artful dodger though, due to Jack Wild‘s performance.

charl08 Love Martin Jarvis. My favourite is his Just William narrations. 10mo

Oliver Twist is Dickens' second published work, initially released as a serial. This is a novel that reads like a classic serial & I can picture in my mind where the cliffhangers must have been. Widely considered to be Dickens' foremost social novel, OT tackles judicial corruption, child labor & exploitation, & laws targeting the financially vulnerable. The politics of casual cruelty targeting the vulnerable is one reason readers return to (cont)

vivastory OT today. Oliver is rarely “on stage“ so to speak in the novel & when he is present he is reduced to a bit of a one dimensional character. What is fascinating for me about the book, is that it is the other characters who steal the show in this novel, mostly unsavory characters: Mr. Bumble, Artful Dodger, Fagin, Mr. Grimwig, Bill Sikes. Bill Sikes is easily one of the greatest villains I have encountered in a book in awhile. I do have to (cont) 10mo
vivastory address an elephant in the room, which is how Fagin & other Jewish characters were portrayed in the book. It was definitely a bit jarring. If you want to know a bit more, I'd encourage you to look at the Wikipedia Page regarding this & decide if you want to read it.
Despite the flaws, I was utterly engrossed while reading Oliver Twist.

MotherOfCats I despised having to read Dickens in high school… but I named my little boy Oliver and feel like I should read this one 😅 10mo
Aimeesue Dickens works best for me on audio, maybe because they were written to be read out loud, in a way? There‘s a LibriVox reader who‘s Absolutely BRILLIANT with all the voices that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to read Dickens -Mil Nicholson. She‘s done all his books, I think. Stellar. 10mo
Bookwomble @batsy Hard Times would be a good one to read on those lines, being Dickens' satire on the burgeoning capitalists of the Industrial Revolution. His "Coketown" was a thinly disguised Preston, the city just up the road from me, which Dickens visited and, clearly, thoroughly disliked! 10mo

My first #weeklyreport in awhile. This week I read 3 books: 2 graphic novels & a novella. I also started the tagged book Saturday night & am now about 3/4 through it. Have quite a few thoughts on it. I loved the themes throughout the book, particularly those of generosity & kindness. I thought the plot made sense, & didn‘t seem too far-fetched, but was still filled with hardships. Similarly, Dickens‘ writing made the novel truly stand out. While I can see how some readers might find it a little slow, I think the writing made up for the slower pace. I was very pleasantly surprised by Oliver Twist, and I‘m hoping to read more by Dickens soon!

Away they run, pell-mell, helter-skelter, slap-dash,… rousing up the dogs… Away they fly, splashing through the mud,… up go the windows, out run the people, onward bear the mob,… There is a passion for hunting something deeply implanted in the human breast.

And that is how you write a chase scene!

I‘m enjoying this reading, but Charles was this absolutely necessary? One must remember how much of the world despised the Irish at one time and make sure as a people we must always stand on the side of the oppressed. 🇮🇪 #shouldertoshoulder

Butterfinger I like that tag. That is powerful. 3y
Cuilin @Milara that was my point! Absolutely we should be more concerned, I was highlighting this to say that “those who don‘t know history are destined to repeat it” I would hate to see Irish people being xenophobic without having a clue to their own history. I‘ll still read Dickens it was a good line to set me thinking about all this. I don‘t regard that as wasted energy if it motivates one to think. 3y
Cuilin @Milara yes. I like that. We cannot hold the past to our standards and we should learn from their mistakes. As Maya Angelou said “when you know better, do better” That‘s all we can do. Read, learn, improve, repeat. 3y

Mission Dickens underway! I finished OT early this morning. It‘s probably my least favorite novel by Dickens, but it‘s Dickens so it‘s still better than everything else. This was his first novel after The Pickwick Papers, and it shows. The characters are even more like caricatures than those in Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop. The graphic depictions of poverty and violence make this a must-read. On to Martin Chuzzlewit next!

UwannaPublishme I‘m reading The Man Who Invented Christmas. Lots of fascinating trivia about Mr. D. 4y

This book was disappointing. I‘ve loved just about every other Dickens novel I‘ve read but not this one. I didn‘t like any of the characters. It was one depressing scene or depraved character after the next. Even the ‘good‘ characters were sickly sweet. Numerous passages that seemed unnecessary. Would have stopped after page 250 but decided to power through it just to know how it all turned out.
