Mrs Harris Goes to Paris & Mrs Harris Goes to New York
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris & Mrs Harris Goes to New York: The Adventures of Mrs Harris (The Bloomsbury Group) | Paul Gallico
21 posts | 19 read | 31 to read
Mrs Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich. One day, when tidying Lady Dant's wardrobe, she comes across the most beautiful thing she has ever seen in her life - a Dior dress. In all the years of her drab and humble existence, she's never seen anything as magical as the dress before her and she's never wanted anything as much before. Determined to make her dream come true, Mrs Harris scrimps, saves and slaves away until one day, after three long, uncomplaining years, she finally has enough money to go to Paris. When she arrives at the House of Dior, Mrs Harris has little idea of how her life is about to be turned upside down and how many other lives she will transform forever. Always kind, always cheery and always winsome, the indomitable Mrs Harris takes Paris by storm and learns one of life's greatest lessons along the way. This treasure from the 1950s introduces the irrepressible Mrs Harris, part charlady, part fairy-godmother, whose adventures take her from her humble London roots to the heights of glamour.

Both of these stories were delightful! The first, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, is one of the lightest and most simply enjoyable books from the #1001books list that I‘ve come across in a while. Mrs. Harris is a continually determined and optimistic person. I also watched the movie, which was enjoyable, but of course, needlessly changed some details.

Daisey In Mrs. Harris Goes to New York, Mrs. Harris again works to help her friends, and although there are some complications, things work out very well in the end.

@BookNAround Thanks for again organizing #LastFirst and the opportunity for a giveaway!

I‘m in the middle of two long reads (Cloud Atlas & Amadis of Gaul), but I took a break for some shorter books. Yesterday I listened to Jennifer Chan is Not Alone as my last completed book of 2023, and today I listened to Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris as my first book of 2024. Tomorrow it‘s back to the long reads.

I didn't initially realize that Mrs. Harris Goes To New York was a separate book, but I'm glad I read it! I think the more serious plot made it a bit better than the first book in the series, and the ending was more satisfactory. It's always funny to see America from a British perspective. :)

This was such a cute read, especially while I was in Paris. Mrs. Harris is a very lovable and relatable character (impressive for a male writer, in my book). I found the ending to be a bit unsatisfactory, but not in any way that ruined the story.

"The small slender woman with apple-red cheeks, greying hair, and shrewd, almost naughty little eyes sat with her face pressed against the cabin window of the BEA Viscount on the morning flight from London to Paris."
My next read for movie/book club.

Thanks @Clwojick and @Lizpixie for #Jumpstart2023 it was a fun month full of fun reads. I could only fit six on the grid but I can recommend all of them. Especially as a lot were #blameitonlitsy choices. This community has really opened my reading horizons. 🙏💚💚💚🐉

The audiobook from Libby has two Mrs Harris books. I‘ve finished the tagged book. I had read it many many years ago but I was even more charmed. The reader does a fantastic cockney accent. I‘m back at work and as you can see I‘m in the middle of everything- can‘t settle on a book. #Jumpstart2024

Clwojick The Royals Next Door has been on my list for a while. Hope it‘s good! 1y
Dragon Thanks @Clwojick I am really enjoying it . It‘s set on Salt Spring which is a short ferry ride from here , Victoria. The author even mentions a cafe I‘ve been to and the Costco I go to. I‘ve only been to Salt Spring twice but it‘s a very memorable place. 💚🐉 1y

Books 126 & 127

I learned about Mrs. Harris from the movie that recently came out based on the 1950's books by Paul Gallico. The novels are short, but I took too long reading them. Since I'd waited for them on hold at the library, I felt obligated to finish, which slowed down my reading. Mrs. Harris has a lot of potential, but, ultimately, flat and disappointing. ⭐️⭐️

All hail the lazy Sunday, complete with an airy, feel-good book and cats.

Very rarely do I go and see two movies in the same day (think this was the first time that I did this). I thought they were both excellent films and while both were @ complete opposite ends of the movie spectrum, they did everything that I expected they would do. Mrs. Harris was a pure joy to watch and Crawdads was introspective and tinged w/ a bit of sadness. I hadn‘t read either novel prior to seeing the movie adaptations. #booktomovie

melissajayne Mrs. Harris is the sort of movie I can see myself when I need a bit of pick me up, same as Julie & Julia does for me at present. Crawdads would be for a rainy day of sorts or for when my book club does the book. Both are wonderful and well done and now I need to read the books… 2y
tpixie @melissajayne The Mrs Harris movie left the theaters before I could get to it. I‘m gonna have to check out the book. Crawdads movie was great and so was the book.! 2y

Such an optimistic story, about an honest, hard working charwoman, dreaming of a Dior dress. A fairy tale almost! A sweet sweet story to read in an evening, that makes you cry and makes you smile and leaves you with a renewed faith in humanity. Nice!
