Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut on a mountain in Nepal. Though she is desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures, like playing hopscotch with her best friend from school, and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family. He introduces her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid in the city. Glad to be able to help, Lakshmi journeys to India and arrives at "Happiness House" full of hope. But she soon learns the unthinkable truth: she has been sold into prostitution.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/07/opinion/sexual-assualt-book-ban.html

There's something consistently missing in the national conversation these days about book banning: "the voices of those children and teenagers who see their experiences in print and finally realize they aren't alone," writes author Patricia McCormick. At the start of this school year, Patricia's novel "Sold " was one of the most banned books in the United States⬇️

TheBookHippie But the ban is
"disrespectful" to the teenagers who want, and in some cases need, to read it, Patricia writes. "I've visited classrooms and juvenile detention centers all over the country since the book came out in 2006. At nearly all the visits, students come forward to say that they have been sexually abused or are being sexually abused - and that seeing their experience rendered in a book finally emboldened them to say so…

Solid literary values, not exploitative, at least not at the prose level. Readers will have their own feelings about researched-based fictionalization of human trafficking, but I would say that this was moving and aims to raise awareness. Can't say if I'd put it in the young adult category--then again, as someone who did not grow up with today's YA's, this was a graphic antidote to the candy coated depictions of intimacy I've seen in those ...

Wow. It's not a very long story but it gives a punch in the heart. It's pretty powerful.

If only in reality, victims of sex slavery could all be given the same hopeful ending.

⭐️5/5 I loved this YA verse novel. It‘s a heart wrenching story of a young girl sold into sex trafficking. The authors uses the power of white space amazingly in here and pulls readers into the reality for thousands of young girls across the world.

This is the last fiction book that I was given and I wanted to post it on its own. It seems like a book that I should have heard of or seen before, but I haven't. It is also written in verse.

It is endorsed by Amnesty International and tells the story of a child slave in Nepal.

I think it will be a heartbreaking but important book

The 3rd book I finished over the weekend was Sold. One of the 10th grade English classes I‘m in is going to be starting this book soon.

Human traffickers have always been at the tippy top of my shit list, followed by child rapists. Bringing awareness about it has always been a priority of mine so I‘m glad this book is being read in our class.

This book was painful to read. I felt anxious and horrified as I followed the story of this young girl. I appreciate that this topic is being researched and written about. In regards to the actual writing of the book, I did not mind style. I read the book in two settings. Finished this book in a few hours, but I think it will stay with me for the rest of my life. Lakshmi, a girl from Nepal, believes she is going to the city to start working as a maid, only to find out that she has actually been sold into prostitution. She narrates her journey in short verse that is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

This book was absolutely devastating. It's told in short chapters that are almost poetry. Not only did it help me understand the enormous tragedy of what these young girls experience, but also helped me understand why it can be so hard to rescue them, given the misinformation they are led to believe.

Guys, if you haven't read this book pick it up and check it out. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking, book written in prose (correct me if this isn't the word I'm looking for - it feels wrong) about a 13 year old girl who is sold into the sex slave trade in India. #yellowcovers #riotgrams

Lindy It's almost a verse narrative, or perhaps vignettes, rather than regular prose. Spare and powerful. 7y

I saw the movie based on this book today. It was about child trafficking and the prostitution business in India. Obviously a very heavy topic but the movie was taken well. I'm curious to know if anyone has read the book this movie is based on. Even if you haven't, I'd encourage you to watch this award winning movie.

BookishFeminist @ramyasbookshelf 😂😂 yep & back at you! I am on my way to bed though. I felt it was a middle grade/YA book and while difficult topic wise, I don't remember it being explicit. To honor the many women & children who are affected by human and sex trafficking across the world, here's a list of fiction books, from middle grade to adult, that deal with this difficult subject. It's important we share their stories and fight this form of modern day slavery. I'll also post some nonfiction recommendations. ✊🏼

This a powerful novel about a young girl, Lakshmi, in the mountains of Nepal who's family sells her into prostitution because of their debt. She is taken over borders, beaten, drugged, sexually abused and kept a prisoner in the brothel. This is a story of lost innocence, strength & sheer will. Justine Eyre did a phenomenal job as a narrator & I was surprised to find out that it was she who did the narration & not someone from Nepal or India.
