Just finished re-reading Dune… Denis Villeneuve was sooo right to make Chani a secular Third Worldist 🤞
Dune all over the place!
Re-read before going to see Dune 2. Split reading the physical copy and listening to the audio to be sure I was done before the movie. Soo much better than the first read, I was able to catch ua lot more detail and the audio helped with some of the more challenging pronunciation.
The movie was great, but as always the book was better. And EVEN better the 2nd time around.
I‘m hooked all over again!

As I mentioned in my previous post I just saw Dune part 2 & IMO the 2 part adaptations are both masterpieces. Other great adaptations:
*Scorsese's adaptation of Endo's incredibly moving novel “Silence“
*The miniseries adaptation of Atwood's “Alias Grace“ directed by Mary Harron & written by Sarah Polley
*Andy Muschietti's 2 part adaptation of “IT“ (esp. chapter 2)
*Lord of The Rings
*Persepolis which Satrapi herself co-wrote & co-directed
This is hands down one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I saw it last night & boy it did not disappoint at all. It has a different feel from the first one, but I think it is every bit as good. Absolutely fantastic.
I only just found out Frank‘s son did a novel that fills the gap between Dune and Dune Messiah. Also, I booked tickets for the 2nd Villeneuve movie. Those are all the excuses I needed to re-read this masterpiece. This book is so imaginative & evocative. I love Lynch/Villeneuve‘s films but honestly, there is a beauty & depth to this novel that just can‘t exist outside of the page. The phrase is mis/over-used now, but this is proper “world-building”
So I promised my son I‘d read his beloved Dune before the 2nd movie came out in March. It‘s slow going for me, I‘m not a big sci-fi reader. Now that I‘ve finished my library book, I need to turn my attention back to it. I went out and bought my copy. I don‘t mind this movie cover at all but can always, always do without these “Dune Part 2” non-removable stickers on them. ☹️
Well, this was a pretty long book. It took me a while to figure out what was happening, but once i got into it, it was good. There is a lot of layers in this book. Now, to watch the movie. It was Chunkster #ChunksterChallenge2023 with 875 pages on Libby. @Amiable It gave me one more spot on #NovemberISpyBingo @Clwojick @TheAromaofBooks plus #RushAthon @DieAReader @Andrew65 @GHABI4ROSES
I'm a bit late for October's #TitlesAndTunes but still just under the wire for the #Blues tag ☺️ @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen
I had loads I thought I could do for this, and in the end went for two classics: Frank's "Dune", and The Velvet's "Pale Blue Eyes" ?
Emergency vet waiting / reading. 😕

This has been one of the most memorable and influential book for me personally that I have ever read.
There are too many things to be said, so rather than read this short review, please check out our very special episode 50 of the Mind duck books podcast where we discuss all the details in depth:

I spent the afternoon helping my son and his partner pick up this little guy from a rescue centre, bringing him home to his forever seitch.
His previous name was based on his fur colour, and while not the very worst it could have been, was inappropriate enough to require a re-naming. So, welcome Leto to #CatsOfLitsy 🐈⬛😻
⭐️⭐️
It took me several months to get through this monster of a book, and despite it being a classic, I struggled to get through it. The world-building and plot was difficult to grasp, and a lot of the book was simply boring. There were certain moments that kept me entertained, but most of my reading consisted of trying to understand the abundance of confusing terminology and what was actually happening in the book.
#thingsincommon - I wasn‘t sure how I was going to connect these 2, but then I put them side by side and the cover coloring is SO similar! So cover color on goodreads
I‘ve been wanting to read Dune for a while now. I watched the new movie (never seen any of the old) and it gave me the courage to read this. I understood the world and story a bit. Normally, I would never watch a movie before the book but it helped here.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. I will provide no description and no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, and some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

I really enjoyed Dune. A true classic that I have finally crossed off my TBR. The world building is incredible. I very much enjoyed Paul's story and his growth into Muad-Dib. There are many more memorable characters and scenes. And sandworms! The first 100 pages might be slow, but they are very important to the rest of the book. I The appendices are very helpful.
I am looking forward to seeing the new movies and reading the rest of the series.
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
- Frank Herbert
My daughter is a huge fan of Dune and has started collecting different editions…this one is cool.
Bk2 of #JumpStart2023 is done! And yes, it was an all nighter which is why I‘m only now posting after passing out! A reread, it was just as fabulous as the 1st time around. It‘s a 60s SFF that‘s definitely stood the test of time & is on my list of #TopTenSFFOfAllTime I loved the new movie but the book is SOOO much better. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #ChunksterChallenge2023 #FourFoursIn23 #TreasonSeason #NoShameReadathon23 #Pantone2023
I‘m about 2/3rds of the way through this chunkster on the 3rd day of #JumpStart2023 Hope to maybe finish it by the morning, I think an all nighter is in the works! I‘m astounded once again, how a SFF book written in 1965 can sound so current & meaningful. It‘s basically a book about climate change with a Messiah story woven through. Brilliant🌵🪱🏜️
Currently rereading Dune as my 2nd #JumpStart2023 book, and it‘s just occurred to me that maybe Robert Jordan in his Wheel Of Time series patterned the Aiel on the Fremen. Both desert people, both with a reverence for water & both a brilliant fighting people. And both looking for their Messiah. Food for thought🤔
This most memorably happened to me reading Dune for the first time. I was commuting to Philadelphia for work and read it every spare moment I had.
Which books have sucked you in this fully?
Apparently I was not alone in reading/shelving—or, in my case rereading—Dune this year. 😂 I was, however, one of the few to tackle Field‘s collected Sharps & Flats newspaper articles. I liked both books (and quite a few others) a lot and overall read very few outright duds. Most anticipated reads for 2023 include Pierce Brown‘s Light Bringer, Justin Cronin‘s The Ferryman, and Annalee Newitz‘s The Terraformers.
Mrs Jacobs introduced me to Dune back in the 7th grade. I don't set out books for show, so I'd be happy for her to see & ask about whatever I'm reading at the time. But she wouldn't get away without seeing how worn is my forty-year-old copy of Dune.

Top 10 book for Sci-fi readers here, but only if you‘re not daunted by the immensity of the series. Frank Herbert created an incredible world-build to rival that of Sanderson with intelligent craftsmanship and a style of timeline I found very new and effective. I can tell the remainder of the series has a lot to offer.
A friend gave me her copy after not caring for it and I enjoyed this story more than I expected! There is a sense of adventure and epic imagery. The mysticism and incorporation of various linguistic roots into the vocabulary reminded me of some of my own travels. I'm not sure how much I'll invest philosophically but it's clear that Herbert poured his mind and heart into his work. Excited to see the cinematic interpretation!

Catching up on this after a busy few days with a sick daughter & grandson. The tagged book is one of the best SciFi novels ever written, it‘s grand, it‘s political, it‘s guerrilla warfare & it‘s mystical. Brilliant.
