The Hubby keeps telling me to read Dune... but I just haven't 😬 I think it may be my forever TBR

JamieArc I‘m currently reading it after seeing the film. It‘s better than I thought it would be, but still a little slow-going since it‘s a chunkster. 16h

Just finished listening to this really long audiobook! This is my dad‘s favorite book and I‘ve been meaning to listen to it for years. It was good, and I‘m glad I listened to it… But, yeah, I‘m glad to be done. I prefer my sci-fi & fantasy with feminism or queerness.

26 Dec 2021-9 Jan 2022 (audiobook)
Dune has long been one of my husband‘s favourite books and I can see why. The plot is similar to Star Wars - people struggling to live on desert planets, a fatherless boy with special powers living in hiding, and a deceitful emperor.
I am not sure that audiobook was the best format - it can be difficult to keep track of complex worlds and peoples - but I have so many books to read and wanted to watch the movie!

#Booked2022, and mainly not to get caught up on all the new titles, but read what‘s on my shelf and some more obscure titles.
✨Tranquility: I need slow, quiet, low-expectations this year
✨I started Dune a month ago but it got lost among the quick holiday reads. As soon as I picked it up again I started enjoying it a lot!

Finally got around to Dune! I think it made me appreciate the movie even more. The metaphor is even more obvious for Iraq, and they are speaking Arabic (instead of a similar-sounding made-up language). But the world building was great!

Thanks for the tag @La_Cori !

1️⃣ My greatest achievement was going on 3 trips to places I‘ve never been before, all outdoors for safety. My greatest challenge was being a teacher! Teaching on Zoom, then being forced back to the classroom by our governor & teaching hybrid, and then having a full class to educate and keep alive.
2️⃣ Tagged. Kind of surprised me when I looked back at my list!

‘Now she saw only the circle of stars. They were like the luminous tips of weapons aimed down at her. A shower of meteors crossed her patch of night. The meteors seemed to her like a warning, like tiger stripes, like luminous grave slats clabbering her blood.‘ Disappointed by the movie, I went back to the book. It reads so differently now from when I read it in my teens. The language is so vivid and the story line wasn‘t done justice by the movie.

Another one of my potential book themes for 2022 is classics I‘ve missed. My bookseller says this is a good starting point for that goal! Sold!

I finished this book a while ago, but we just had our book club meeting last weekend. This one was not for me. I didn‘t find the story to be particularly engaging, & I found Herbert‘s writing to be subpar. I‘m bumping up my rating to so-so because it did make for a great discussion.

My reading taste has changed so much this year. I never imagined I would dive into the substantial sci-fi genre. It never caught my interest until I picked up Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. And now there are several sci-fi titles that have caught my interest. And I‘m always looking for more. So if you have any recommendations drop them in the comments.

Sci-fi I want to try: https://wildwoodreads.com/2021/11/22/sci-fi-books-that-i-want-to-try/

RaeLovesToRead I've been in a couple of sci fi book clubs... I would recommend The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet for something light, The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury is also wonderful and if you're really getting into the genre The Complete Robot by Isaac Asimov is stunning. 2mo
Dragon Ancillary Justice is the first book in a trilogy , incredible world building 2mo
wanderinglynn I second @RaeLovesToRead on Long Way. Becky Chambers is awesome. Also for fun sci-fi, I recommend John Scalzi‘s Redshirts and Agent to the Stars. He also has a series that starts with Old Man‘s War that is awesome. 2mo

wanderinglynn And HHGTTG is one of my all time fave books! 🙌🏻👍🏻 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @wanderinglynn I just googled HHGTTG 😂🤦‍♀️ 2mo
Vansa Octavia Butler's Kindred and Parable of the Sower, Parable of the talents are absolutely excellent.Sinopticon, a collection of Chinese short stories is lovely and unique. 2mo
TurnerofPages I've been finding myself also gravitating to the sci-fi genre this year as well. I've been a lifelong fantasy, horror, and historical fiction fan, and other than anything Star Trek or Star Wars (the original trilogy ONLY!) related, I really never delved into any sci-fi books. I will be starting the Otherland series by Tad Williams in 2022, and I am pretty excited about that! 2mo

Holy crap, THIS is a classic of the genre?? The concept was fine, sure, but the pacing was garbage and the characterization was...interesting. If it weren't for Jessica and eventually Alia, I wouldn't have made it through. #scifi #whoaddedthistothecanonijustwannatalk

BarbaraTheBibliophage Love the hashtag! Because I absolutely struggled my way through this book. It‘s one of my husband‘s favorites, and I 💯 questioned him on that. Turns out he read it when he was in his twenties. That‘s about the mindset … and you‘re right, Herbert‘s writing needed a vicious editor. Did you know it was first sold in auto parts stores? The only people who would put it on the shelf. Explains a lot … 2mo
kissmehardy @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm STILL in my twenties and I couldn't handle it! It feels very amateur and underdeveloped. 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kissmehardy Well … I didn‘t mean to insult people in their 20s. 🤪 Just been around the mindset of men in their 20s a lot and this reminded me of how they often think. I agree with your assessment of the book—amateurish for sure. 2mo

Guess who‘s off work with a sinus infection 😰 I‘m so busy at the moment and I love this time of year, but it seems like my body would rather have me lie in a heap instead.

I‘m trying to make progress on Dune but I‘m finding the writing style very difficult. It‘s not so much that it‘s complicated, it‘s just so repetitive and I feel like I‘m getting told every single thing three or four times. Maybe I‘ll take a break and read a romance instead

Amiable I gave up on “Dune” about 100 pages in. Just couldn‘t do it. 2mo

I liked the story but the book took me forever to read. A full month! I understand why so many love it, but I doubt I‘ll ever read it again. I just don‘t love SciFi as much as some people.

THAT BEING SAID: the 2021 movie is FANTASTIC, a great adaptation. We saw it in IMAX and my entire family loved it. We‘re going to watch it again and we‘re already excited for the next installment which hasn‘t even been filmed yet. Movie better than the book!!

According to Goodreads I read Dune over 4 years ago. I have been eagerly anticipating the movie adaptation since I first heard about it. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I love Denis Villeneuve's movies. His run of 4 consecutive films (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) in almost as many years is nearly unparalleled today. Each one of these is a gem in it's own way. As is Dune. Is Dune the best movie I've seen this year?

vivastory Too soon to say. So far it is a toss up between: The Green Knight (a visionary adaptation with great casting & fantastical elements), Dune (a visionary adaptation of a sci-fi novel with great casting & contemporary parallels about the dangers of colonialism) & Midnight Mass (a horror story that is also just as much about addiction & death & yes has a great cast.) I realize that including MM is cheating a bit since it's a series, but *shrugs* 3mo
Suet624 I'm so glad you went to see it. I so appreciate Villeneuve spending the time to make the version of Dune that I wanted to see.
3mo
vivastory @Suet624 It really exceeded my expectations, which is rare whenever you have high expectations. It really was phenomenal. The casting, the sound design, the special fx, the story. I plan on watching it again on HBO before it leaves which I hardly ever do. I loved how it felt otherworldly but I would often forget it was a sci-fi story (when they first land on Arrakis & someone begins playing bagpipes). Touches like that really made it special. 3mo
See All 17 Comments
Suet624 It was the fastest 2.5 hours! I agree that I would forget the label sci-fi. I actually have trouble explaining the movie or story because for some reason I can‘t compare it to anything else. I don‘t watch or read sci-fi and yet I‘m in love with Dune. I‘m actually going back to watch it again tomorrow at the theatre to see the stuff I missed the first time. (edited) 3mo
night_shift I'm waiting for this to come out on streaming I have. Very much looking forward to it. Glad it seems to be getting positive reviews to far! 3mo

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I‘ve never read the book, but enjoyed the movie yesterday with my husband and his mom. They‘re both obsessed with the book, to the point that they want to get the tattoos of the monologue starting with “Fear is the mind killer” and loved the movie. 3mo
Suet624 Scott, I've seen a zillion trailers for Dune, but never this one. Until today. Have you seen it? A brilliant music selection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prcrtb_sxL0 3mo
vivastory @Suet624 I haven't, but that's perfect! Thanks for the link. This reminds me a couple of weeks ago when I was driving to work & listening to member supported radio station & they were playing the best Bond theme songs. One that they played was composed by Radiohead, but ended up not being used in the movie. 3mo

I officially completed the Week 1 #Screamathon Scare Pair challenge! I read Dune earlier this month and watched the new movie Saturday night.

🪱 I loved the book because it was action packed, combined with being an extraordinary coming of age story, I was worried about the length, but it flew by.

🎬 I also loved the movie. It stayed pretty close to the book.

🧙🏻 Yes, it‘s an October story. There are witches and monsters!
