The House of the Spirits
The House of the Spirits: A Novel | Isabel Allende
The unforgettable first novel that established Isabel Allende as one of the worlds most gifted and imaginative storytellersnow available for the first time as an ebook. The House of the Spirits brings to life the triumphs and tragedies of three generations of the Trueba family. The patriarch Esteban is a volatile, proud man whose voracious pursuit of political power is tempered only by his love for his delicate wife, Clara, a woman with a mystical connection to the spirit world. When their daughter Blanca embarks on a forbidden love affair in defiance of her implacable father, the result is an unexpected gift to Esteban: his adored granddaughter Alba, a beautiful and strong-willed child who will lead her family and her country into a revolutionary future. One of the most important novels of the twentieth century, The House of the Spirits is an enthralling epic that spans decades and lives, weaving the personal and the political into a universal story of love, magic, and fate.

Buechersuechtling Understandable. For me, this was a book to remember even though I didn‘t know it was a book when I saw the film 🎞 years/ages ago. As I later stumbled over the book in my library it was no question I took it home. Even though I had the pictures and looks of the people in me while reading that didn‘t disturb me. I found it helpful in the parts that were more intense in the book than in the film. Enjoy‼️ (edited) 2mo

Day 11 - #Spirit #SoulSeptember

This book is one of my favorite books by Isabel Allende. I found her writing to be very captivating and full of magical realism. Her prose is beautiful as she tells the story of four generations of women. It almost seems autobiographical of Allende‘s life. It is easy to become attached to these four main characters and to become emotionally involved in their lives.

Geez Louise, this book took forever to finish. My boyfriend and I took to calling the author “Isabel No-ende”. A single paragraph will cross over two pages; sometimes the paragraph consisted of one sentence. But by golly, it was good. A generational saga taking place in an unnamed country, but very Chile-like, sweeps through history with a vibrant, magical, incredibly wordy brush. Recommended, but make yourself comfortable. You‘ll be there awhile.

This book was so beautiful and heartbreaking. What a wonderful exploration of family through the generations, with all of the flaws of those people and the heartache that can plague a family during that time. Power and colonialism are huge themes, and I think they are dealt with well. It can be hard to read sometimes because a lot of what happens is horrible, but it‘s worth it in the end. When I finished I was actually shaking. Highly recommend.

This story was beautiful, well throughout amoung the generations of the two families and their interlinked fates.

The author writes a beautiful and haunting tale of family, power, betrayal and heartache. The story is woven like multiple strings ans is braided together at the end of story in such a beautiful way.

This story doesnt have a happy ending, but rather a real one about life understanding the ways in which our actions are interwoven.

After being underwhelmed by one of Allende‘s other books, I now get why she has the reputation she does. This was a masterful weaving of 3 generations of a fascinating family during a tumultuous political climate. I love how Allende portrays Chile‘s history while never mentioning the country or any major player by name, evoking that much more mystery and the feeling that it could be anywhere.

BarbaraBB This is my favourite Allende although I also really liked 7mo

Great book with hint of Chile‘s history and political development within its magic realism. The characters are symbols and at the same time each represent the true social classes and division of that historic time. I recommend you read a bit about Chile‘s political environment of Allende‘s era so you can immerse yourself in this fantastic reading.

Epic, beautifully written and brilliant—however, it was a little too political for me in parts (and some parts were just brutal to read—violence, rape, etc) so while I very much enjoyed this story—and wasn‘t bothered at all by the magical realism parts—it won‘t get 5 stars from me.

1/5⭐ Nope. Numerous instances of casual animal cruelty/death pushed me over the edge. Esteban is a disgusting delusional rapist human being, & I'm not sure if the author meant for him to be viewed as multi-dimensional, or unreliable narrator, or it's just bad writing, or what, but he isn't a character I want to follow in the least. The 1st/3rd person switches & infodumps made the narrative very jumpy & distanced. Disappointing. #projectnew

DGRachel I couldn‘t handle this one either. It‘s still on my shelf, but I don‘t think I will ever try again. 10mo

This book. I just really don‘t know how I feel about it. One minute I loved it the next I was yelling at it. I guess that‘s what made it raw and realistic, with a lot of magic realism. Epic story that spans over three generations. Not much of a happy ending, but that‘s real life .

This was my pick for South America in my #ReadtheWorld challenge. It's set in Chile from WW2 though the 1973 Chilean coup to overthrow leftist Salvatore Allende (backed by the US as part of the effort to curb worldwide communism). It's the story of 4 generations of a Chilean family. To be honest I found it dull and too long at times, however the portrayal of the politics at that time was worth hanging in there to the end. 4⭐️s
