On the Road
On the Road | Jack Kerouac
A 50th anniversary hardcover edition of Kerouac's classic novel that defined a generation Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac's classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be beat and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that set them free. Based on Kerouac's adventures with Neal Cassady, On the Road tells the story of two friends whose four cross-country road trips are a quest for meaning and true experience. Written with a mixture of sad-eyed navet and wild abandon, and imbued with Kerouac's love of America, his compassion for humanity, and his sense of language as jazz, On the Road is the quintessential American vision of freedom and hope, a book that changed American literature and changed anyone who has ever picked it up. This hardcover edition commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of the novel in 1957 and will be a must-have for any literature lover. @Didn'tTypeOnTP! On The Road is to the Beat generation what The Sun Also Rises was to the Lost generation of the ‘20s. You‘ll often see them compared, held up side-by-side. I didn't *love* either of them, but I‘m going to plant my flag and say that On The Road was the better of the two, because to my mind it presented a far more self-aware and nuanced treatment of masculinity. I‘m going to be away and/or busy over the next week or so! Which #1001Books should I take with me? Will probably just read for a bit each day.

We‘re first going to help daughter (last year of college 😮!) and her girlfriend move into their new apartment, then move youngest son (first year of college) in his dorm room. Our anniversary is also coming up and we may go somewhere for a couple days after dropping him off, but TBD where.

LauraBeth Why not leave On The Road behind in your son‘s place to discover and leave Kafka On The Shore behind for your daughter and her gf to discover? I‘d read A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian 🚜 I‘m a book leave-behinder 😂 1mo
JoyBlue Congratulations on all the milestones! 💙 1mo
CafeMom The only one I read was A Short History of Tractors which I loved. It is a dark comedy. I think you can't go wrong with a Murakami either. 1mo

Liz_M Sounds like a fun and hard trip! Main Street is the most straight-forward read and has a nostalgia about it that might match your mood? 1mo
Ruthiella Agree with Liz that Main Street was great! But maybe On the Road is more appropriate for a road trip? Happy Anniversary 😀 1mo
Reggie I hope everything goes well and that you have a great anniversary trip!!! 1mo
Lynnsoprano I have Short History of Tractors... and have been thinking about reading it soon. Maybe our buddy read? We‘ve both had a tough year, but I‘d still love to do one. 1mo
ValerieAndBooks @LauraBeth @JoyBlue @CafeMom @Q84 @Liz_M @Ruthiella @Reggie thanks all for your kind words and recommendations! I ended up taking On The Road, but read zero words 😂! Just so busy! Will try to start it soon. 3w
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano yes, let‘s do it 💖! When? September? October? 3w
Lynnsoprano Great! I would say mid to late September. I want to get past the darn storm😄 Oh, I‘m so excited! (edited) 3w

I‘ve got lots of display pics, and #BookExpo and #BookCon pics, to still share with you, but I won‘t be able to continue the flood of sharing until tomorrow night 😕. I‘m heading back to the horse farm in western PA. My mom‘s in the hospital for surgery, she fell and broke some bones. She‘s doing fine but in pain, and I‘m on my way to see her. So I‘ll be back on at some point tomorrow night, I think. Until then #LitsyFamily, *biiig hug*!

I‘m maybe too old to appreciate this one?

In the beginning, I enjoyed the adventure of just taking off across the country with nothing. There are some phrases in this book that are just incredibly written. Around halfway through, I was sick of Sal‘s white male chauvinist homophobe semi-racist crap, and really wished something new would happen. Also, I wanted to slap the shit out of Dean. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Will Patton is cool, though. 😂

⭐️⭐️

#1001books

gradcat I love your review! 10mo
dawn-pInk I would recommend Bonnie Bremser Frazer. 10mo
CarolynM Yeah, it didn't do a lot for me, either. One thing I thought was really interesting though - nobody mentioned the war. There were a couple of mentions of being stationed somewhere or other, but nothing about the war itself, or any experiences in the military. Considering when it was set (and written) I expected it to come up somewhere. 10mo
See All 17 Comments
sprainedbrain @CarolynM That was very odd... clearly the Beat Generation writers were anti-war, but you would think all these travels back and forth across the country so soon after WWII there would be some mention. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 10mo
CarolynM Yes, you would think being anti-war would make them want to talk about the consequences, at least. 10mo
BookwormM I read the book but personally couldn‘t wait to “get off the bus” 10mo
BarbaraBB Still need to read this one. 10mo
Victoriahoperose This one isn‘t my top pick by Kerouac. He actually has a strong connection with Buddhism which he explores deeper in The Dharma Bums. If you‘re trying to get into The Beats and want more about the state of the world, you may like Ginsberg better. I definitely recommend Howl and America (both poems) by him. He is a lot more reader friendly than Kerouac and super powerful. ☺️ 10mo
Lauredhel I just can't stand these dudelit "classics" most of the time. Salinger. Hemingway. Bleagh. 10mo
sprainedbrain @Victoriahoperose Thank you for this! I‘ve had Ginsberg on my tbr forever, so I will definitely give him a try. 10mo
sprainedbrain @Lauredhel ‘Dudelit‘ made me 😂 (edited) 10mo
sprainedbrain @dawn-pInk Thank you! I‘m going to see if I can track down a copy of Troia... that sounds interesting. 10mo
ravenlee I tried to read it in high school and didn‘t get far because it just annoyed me. So maybe it‘s not an age thing so much as a taste thing. And @Lauredhel “dudelit” is perfect! 10mo
Reviewsbylola I HATED this one!! 10mo
Zelma I think this is pretty much written for guys in high school and college; it doesn‘t seem to have wide appeal. 10mo
mrsh62010 It was a big time DNF for me for the same reasons. Sexism, racism and homophobia are my biggest turn offs. 10mo
Blaire I liked this one but I read it in high school, might have a different impression now. 10mo

One straight out of my Top-3!
You won't find like an actual story in this particular book, there won't be a beginning, a middle or an end....But you'll will find a certain magic that is hard to explain, a magic that comes out of the poetry that is in every page, that connects you straight to that era!

Leftcoastzen @ValerieAndBooks Try to put it in its historical context , there were people who came back from WWII and wanted suburbia , the grey flannel suit, and then there were the ones wanted no part of the middle class American life, hipsters , dreamers , artists , authority and conformity was not their bag.Kerouac started it in 1949, though not published till 57.I think even if you don‘t love it ,you will get how it was a breakthrough,of sorts. 1y

Pickpick

3.5 🌟🌟🌟⚡
On surface, it is a bland story of two friends, Sal and Dean, and their numerous adventures on the road. Yet Jack creates a charming atmosphere. It feels alien to think of a time when people could just flit from town to town with little money and care for their lives. Dean, the conman was wily but you could see why Sal was smitten by him. Maybe he was in love? The book was worth the ride though.

Halfway through this one. The protagonist, Sal, has already travelled more than I have in my entire life. Hahaha.

Scarlett_ohara I am reading about 10 pages of this a month lol. I have been reading it for over a year. It's very, very hard to power through this book for me. 1y
ChaitanyaSethi @Scarlett_ohara Hahaha, I've been reading it slowly too. I'm just impressed with how casually they were drifting from town to town with no money. 1y

Cafelicien It took me a while to read this book. It‘s good. Not Cuckoo‘s Nest good, but good. 1y
ChaitanyaSethi @Cafelicien So far I'm enjoying the stories of Sal. There doesn't seem to be any other plot point except for the travel journals. It's been time that I read Cuckoo's nest. I can't remember the writing though I remember the story 1y
CoffeeNBooks I read this recently, and there was just something about it that I enjoyed. I think maybe it was the frenetic pace of Sal's life. It was intriguing. I agree with @Cafelicien - not Cuckoo's Nest good, but good. 😃 1y
ChaitanyaSethi @CoffeeNBooks I'm finding the journey aspect enjoyable too. Maybe because it's such a far cry from what we are used to. I am enjoying the random and guilt-free drifting trips of the characters. 1y
