Eccomi | Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Safran Foer nato a Washington nel 1977 e vive a New York. Attualmente insegna Scrittura creativa alla New York University. So I was unsure how I would feel about this book, but it's actually really good, especially if you really like domestic fiction, which I do. I particularly loved the dialogues, they seemed so real. The ending is very emotional.

This is book 12 out of the 14 I won in Picador's fall giveaway in 2017. I can't wait til I've read them all, I feel guilty for taking so long.

98% of the time I read books by women authors. Reading books written by men is a different experience. I don't know if it's just me but almost always there is mention of certain female body parts.
Just something I noticed.

Bailedbailed

I'm bailing on this one for now. It's not doing it for me and I know I'm just not in the right mood. I'll try again later.

JennyM You do have to be in the right mood to read his books I think. Hope the next one you pick up is the ticket 😊 4y
CarolynM @JennyM I'm feeling a bit restless and distracted (can't think why😬) and I need something lighter and/or faster paced. I think I'm going to enjoy this one when processing things better. 4y
sisilia I think I have this in my TBR 🙈 4y

Cathythoughts Oh no ! Covid is an awful curse... I hope your lockdown will work & be over soon... thinking of you 👍🏻❤️ 4y
BarbaraBB I know what you mean and @Cathythoughts is right, it‘s a curse 🤷🏻‍♀️. I hope your are holding up well (again) and that you will want to return to this wonderful book one day 😘 4y
LeeRHarry I‘m in the middle of two books atm - one I‘ve read before and another I‘ve watched the mini series of - I‘m finding I need to read books that need minimal concentration right now - second lockdown is doing nothing for my reading 🤣 4y
MicheleinPhilly This whole situation has torpedoed my reading. I marvel at people that have read 100 books over the last 4 months. I think I‘ve read 10. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Be well and stay safe! 4y
arubabookwoman I liked this, but I can see it‘s one that you need to read at the right time. 4y
CarolynM @Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Thanks for your good wishes😘😘😘 I feel like I did back in March, unsettled and mildly anxious. I don't find it hard to stay home, but I feel like there's no end in sight for this. Hopefully I'll settle into it again like I did during the first lockdown. 4y
CarolynM @LeeRHarry I think it might be a lot of romances and cozy mysteries for me over the next few weeks🙂 I'm supposed to read The Weekend for book group next week. I hope that's not too demanding. 4y
CarolynM @arubabookwoman Part of the reason I've bailed is that I think I will like it a lot if I can concentrate well enough to think about it while I read it. If I keep going now I won't get as much out of it. 4y
BarbaraBB That‘s the scary part indeed. When will this end? 4y

“Without love, you die. With love, you also die. Not all deaths are equal.”

Wow I loved this book. The first 50 pages were hard to get through and the last 50 pages were also hard to get through, but the story was beautiful. It told of a family‘s unraveling over a short few weeks. I loved the history and the religion that was not so subtly woven into the story. I loved how the book was about teenage characters, middle age characters, and

sarahlandis great grandparents, so you were able to read narration from so many different age groups and he wrote them so well. 4y
BarbaraBB I loved this one too 💕 4y

I was wondering today how much progress I‘ve made on my TBR shelves since the beginning of our shelter-in-place order (left-hand pile). Then I wondered how that stacked up next to the number of books I‘ve added to the TBR shelf since the beginning of our shelter-in-place order (right-hand pile). There you go. At least I‘m not making negative progress! (In the middle are books I‘ve acquired that I‘d already read, so they don‘t count.🤪)

On my morning take-a-break-from-work walks, I often walk by the Little Free Library in my neighborhood, just to see what‘s there. There seems to be quite a bit of turnover as far as what books are there—which I love to see! I couldn‘t resist picking these up for myself this week. There were 3 copies of Here I Am, so I took that as a sign that I needed one. 😁 And I‘ve read & enjoyed Binti, so I couldn‘t resist picking it up for my husband to read.

#MusicalNewYear This was a bookclub selection a few years back. I loved it for it‘s comic appeal and deep satire musing over modern Jewish identity. It was also a very thinly veiled implosion of JSF marriage to novelist Nicole Kraus. Most members of my bookclub HATED this book. They found JSF pretentious and incredibly self indulgent. #ImHere for this novel but can‘t say it will appeal to most. Hmmmm, I wonder if you‘d like it @britt_brooke

LauraBeth I recommend Inheritance by Dani Shapiro - very well written and central to the book is her Jewish identity (and what happens when you‘ve been raised as orthodox because your father was Jewish but then you realize he‘s not your biological father). 5y
Cinfhen Thanks @LauraBeth I‘ve seen this memoirist name around a lot. Is Inheritance her first memoir??? I‘m interested in reading her work 5y
LauraBeth @cinfhen It‘s not her first memoir, but it‘s the first one I‘ve read by her and I read it in a day. It‘s very fast-paced and thoughtful. I think you‘d love this. It‘s all about family, ancestry, identity and it reads like a genetic mystery at a journalistic pace. 👍👍 5y
Cinfhen Sold!!!! @LauraBeth thanks 💕💕 5y
DivineDiana @LauraBeth @Cinfhen This is the second time that someone recommended Dani Shapiro within the last few days. She spoke last week at the author series of the Philadelphia Free Library. My friend, who has read all of her books, went to see her. Stacked! 5y
merelybookish I have never read this author because he strikes me as pretentious. 😜 And then there were a weird set of emails with Natalie Portman that got leaked. 🙄 5y
Cinfhen The book sort of eludes to those infamous emails @merelybookish 😉it‘s written into the plot of this book!! 5y
Cinfhen I‘m really going to look out for her work! Thanks @DivineDiana @LauraBeth 💚 5y
LauraBeth @DivineDiana It‘s really good! @cinfhen It was interesting how she framed the narrative with relevance to Halacha and that sometimes things get thrown out of the rulebook for the sake of love and family - genetic and otherwise. ❤️ 5y
Suet624 I loved this book. Chuckled my way through it. He also had me thinking about a lot of things. And I agree with @laurabeth - Shapiro is worth a read. I haven‘t read her newest but am looking forward to it. 5y
BarbaraBB I loved this book too, as in LOVED it. Now I‘ll have to check out the Shapiro as well 💜 5y

Excellent read. This explores the differing cultures of a a family separated by geography. All on the verge of completely falling apart because of foreign conflict and personal problems. I love how the author explores the minds within the family as the tumble toward divorce. So many excellent lines.

Foer is a wonderful writer, but this novel threw me. I was enjoying the storyline of the dissolution of Jacob & Julia's marriage, as much as you can enjoy being a witness to something so painful. It started to unravel anytime their children came into a scene–are there really kids that precocious? The natural disaster is incredibly distracting-it draws the reader‘s attention away from Jacob & Julia and draws the reader right out of the book.

An examination of a Jewish American family as well as the politics surrounding Judaism in the world, this book is strongest during its focus on the former. The arc of the family is absorbing and the moments when all three generations are together are terrific and quite funny. The audiobook narrator, Ari Fliakos, is terrific. I‘ve never read Foer before and I would definitely read him again.

🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️ I just found this signed first edition in a $2 clearance bin at B&N!! I love #JSF!! And I loved this book.

On a sad note, though, the layoffs hit my store hard. There were hardly any employees. A manger had to price check this book for me, and there was no designated cashier, just the man working in the music department who jumped on as needed.

Knightingale B&N is doomed. 6y
alisiakae 😢😢 Our nearest B&N store always seems to be busy (with people actually buying stuff!). But most of the others I go to always seem so empty. 6y
britt_brooke @Knightingale For sure. I‘m not surprised at all. I haven‘t enjoyed shopping there in years, but my sons love to go there. 6y

britt_brooke @4thhouseontheleft Ours usually has a decent amount of shoppers, but I don‘t know how much they are actually buying. I never buy myself books there (with today‘s exception), but my sons like going there. 6y
TheWordJar I‘m always so excited to see how busy our B&N usually is. I haven‘t been by since the layoffs, but it worries me, as I live in a town with only one other small independent bookstore. 🙁 6y
alisiakae @britt_brooke ours usually has a line at the check out. I think they are an anomaly, sadly. It happens to be at a very popular and busy outdoor shopping area that is very walkable and has lots of restaurants nearby. 6y
Leftcoastzen Yay! Super find! 6y
britt_brooke @4thhouseontheleft Ours usually has s line, too (but I did go at an “off” time today). Yours sounds just like our location. They‘ve been suffering for years. Those are really big stores to sustain without enough sales. 6y
britt_brooke @TheWordJar My tiny local store shut down last week. 😭 But, I‘m close to Nashville so I still have options when B&N goes under. Not everyone is that lucky. 6y
emilygatlin The weird thing about B&N layoffs to me is that I've never seen employees lollygaging around. They're ALWAYS doing something. I think about how much more work the remaining staff has to do now. 6y
britt_brooke @Leftcoastzen I may have audibly said “holy shit” when I saw it. 🙊 6y
britt_brooke @emilygatlin These folks today were busting their asses. They didn‘t look happy. I hate it for them. 6y
Schlinkles As someone who worked for Borders, I can tell you that what‘s going on with B&N is eerily familiar. It likely won‘t end well. 6y
britt_brooke @Schlinkles I miss Borders! 😫 I think you‘re right. It‘s only a matter of time before they start closing stores. 6y
dariazeoli I am worried. I like to spend hours at the B&N reading. I‘d buy more if they matched their website prices. Instead they refuse and fire their staff with no notice. I‘m sorry it‘s coming to this. 6y
britt_brooke @dariazeoli They won‘t match their own online prices? 6y
dariazeoli @britt_brooke No. if you order a book online for pickup at a store, you pay the store‘s price. It‘s silly. 6y
britt_brooke @dariazeoli Wow, that‘s nuts. 😬 6y
Dogearedcopy I love our local B&N: It actually has a knowledgeable and helpful staff BUT I hate it when the regional managers (or whatever they are) come in and try to show the locals how it‘s done. Everything that comes out of their mouths is scripted upsell. I just want to buy my book, d@mm1t! 6y
Dogearedcopy Oh, yeah and not price matching their online sales even when they order the book to come in from the same warehouse that their online sales are shipped from! 6y
britt_brooke @Dogearedcopy That corporate stuff is so frustrating (with most businesses). They try to treat everything so cookie-cutter. It‘s silly. And the not price matching their online stuff is blowing my damn mind. That‘s insane and truly stupid. That‘s a form of bad customer service. 6y
minkyb It is quite sad. I was in B & N yesterday. The nearest one is about a 20 minute drive. I remember when it opened, there was such energy for so long. I have watched it go downhill and it breaks my heart for the employees and the community. 6y
minkyb Excellent find! 6y
britt_brooke @minkyb It‘s sad to know that we can no longer sustain a big box book store. 6y

This book is so cathartic. I absolutely felt it in my being. Insightful. Memorable. Remarkable. I will take many lessons from this book as I embark on my journey towards becoming a better human. The ending is a tear jerker.

Mehso-so

Disappointing, considering how wonderful #EverythingIsIlluminated and #ExtremelyLoudAndIncrediblyClose were. I found a lot of parallels to my own life in Here I Am, but at it's heart this book felt far more cynical than Foer's previous works. This removed me from the characters and left me without anyone to root for. Perhaps that was intentional, but it kept me from being invested.

AndjoSant I‘m feeling this way after reading the first 100 pages, but I‘ll persevere 6y

Foer's writing is undeniable, however, this book had its moments. I had heard him in an interview on NPR about this book and was intrigued by the Jewish family roots which were the best parts for me. Foer is overindulgent at times and opens up many plotlines that I think could have been more tied together. And this is really judgy of me, but I heard of his divorce with Nicole Krauss who I like and it's hard not to wonder if this reflects that.

It's been a minute since I've had time to read. Finally quit my second job and have a weekend to myself for the first time in a long time. Going to see one of my all time favorite bands tonight in a city I haven't been to in a while with some time for this book I started forever ago= a perfect Saturday!

Love the writing shown here but ultimately couldn't get into the pages and pages of dialog and conversations. For me, the second DNF of NPR's Top 10 of 2016.

Pickpick

Safran Foer at his most Safran Foer. What does it mean to model being a Jew while being an atheist? Can we still give meaning to traditions we don't ourselves believe in? This one contains beautiful but isolated laments on love, life, God and sacrifice amidst a story that ambles toward nowhere.

BarbaraBB Just a pick or a real favourite? I really loved it! 7y
