Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | Douglas Adams
"IRRESISTIBLE!"--The Boston GlobeSeconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have") and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don't forget to bring a towel!"[A] WHIMSICAL ODYSSEY...Characters frolic through the galaxy with infectious joy".--Publishers Weekly

A sci-fi classic, this book has the right balance of adventure and tongue in cheek dry humor to keep you entertained for the duration of the book. A great go-to when life is throwing a lot at you all at once and you're feeling overwhelmed.

The President in particular is very much a figurehead — he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it...

Bookwomble ... On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox* is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had — he has already spent two of his ten presidential years in prison for fraud.

I remember when Radiohead released their breakthrough single #Creep I liked it at the time, but it was their following album The Bends that really displayed their originality & turned me into a lifelong fan. Sprinkled throughout their discography are literary references, such as the following lyric from In Rainbows, "Mephistopheles is just beneath/ And he's reaching up to grab me." My personal favorite is their song Paranoid Android, ref. Marvin.

vivastory A side note of mutual admiration: Thom Yorke said that while writing several of the lyrics for Kid A he was thinking of Murakami's Wind-up Bird Chronicle. In Murakami's Kafka on the Shore, one of the characters listens to Kid A. 2mo

I'm on the third book of this series right now and I was planning on just reviewing the entire thing as a whole but I'm starting to forget the beginning so I'm just going to review as I go. This book was incredibly entertaining. Douglas Adams has this wry almost dry ironic humor that really just pushes all the right buttons while still being complex and mad scientist intelligent. It makes you look at the world (and the Universe) differently.

I finished it. I can cross it off my reading bucket list poster. Other than that, not much I would recommend.

For some, this might be a very funny book. To me, it was just a random thought process that went nowhere through the vast unknown reaches of space and back again. Escapism? Fantasy? Who knows?
Which might just be the point...

I‘m on page 28. Should I keep going?
The style is currently throwing me for a loop. I don‘t like reading books where the establishment of a world is just a bunch of names and facts thrown at you all at once. Same issue with Brandon Sanderson books; just can‘t get into them.

I hate to give up because it‘s a fairly short novel, but I haven‘t found anything that‘s drawing me in yet...

ravenlee I would skip ahead into another section or two and see if there‘s anything there that makes you want to continue. Otherwise, try it another time. 2mo
swynn I love The Hitchhikers Guide. But I loved it at "Far out in the uncharted backwaters ..." If it hasn't hooked you by page 28 then it probably won't. 2mo

SleepyDragon If you aren't already laughing your head off, it's probably not your kind of humor. If you still want to give Douglas Adams a chance, try Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, or it's sequel Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul. I know people who liked that better than Hitchhikers. 2mo
keys_on_fire @ravenlee @swynn @NeesyBeth @ beck_42 I kept reading a few more pages and removed my sense of trying to figure things out. I was able to finish the book and can mark it off my 100 books bucket list poster without feeling guilty. 🤣 Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate why it might be awesome for someone else. Thanks for the encouragement! 2mo
