A feminist in her time, Mary was far ahead yet no doubt trying to voice the same things that so many other womxn had, before her (which we are STILL shouting today). Her words would make for powerful signs at a march; no doubt she marches with us in spirit today.

Wollstonecraft's biography is as colorful & fascinating as that of her daughter, Mary Shelley, & her friends. In January 1798, four months after her death, her husband William Godwin shocked the public with his memoirs of his late wife. He chronicled her suicide attempts, illegitimate children & love affairs. Mary was viciously attacked by writers during her life & after, but her championing of women's rights based on a rational society would 👇

I know this is an important book, and there were a few good quotes, but it was so hard to read! I read lots of older books so it isn‘t because of when it was written, she just went on and on. I ended up skimming the last few chapters. I guess I‘m glad I read it, but it won‘t be a re-read. #litsyclassics #v @Sarah83

I have to admit that I‘m struggling with this. Her writing style is so unfocused! But I have often wondered if Jane Austen read this. When she describes soldiers, it‘s Wickham to a tee. And her harping on women living for feelings is so Marianne from Sense and Sensibility. Not to mention the theme of unhappiness due to an unequal marriage. What better way to close out the first quarter #Booked2018 than with the original #FeministClassic? Mary Wollestonecraft was fighting the good fight for women's equality long before most women even considered the possibility. It's amazing, given the time, that it was published at all. It's also very sad that so much of it is still relevant. Why don't we get it by now? Oh yeah, because we don‘t all want to.

I think it‘s time I officially bail on this. I don‘t like bailing on books, but after struggling through the first bit, I‘ve ended up letting it sit on my shelf untouched for weeks. I‘d like to finish it someday, but now does not seem to be the time.

Ok... I‘m going to jump into this #LitsyClassics challenge! Although full disclosure, it will probably take me more than one year to finish. I tried to pick a lot of classics in Sci-Fi, by women, or about historically minority groups/issues to keep me motivated.😉 The dates in parenthesis are ones I can use for the #192019 challenge too, and the second set for the #MountTBR Challenge. The * is for a re-read, I haven‘t read it since high school.

I made my selections for #litsyclassics for 2018. I read a lot of classics and have crossed many of the obvious ones off my list within the last couple years but there are always more! @Sarah83
