Vindication of the Rights of Woman
Vindication of the Rights of Woman | Mary Wollstonecraft
" It would be an endless task to trace the variety of meannesses, cares, and sorrows, into which women are plunged by the prevailing opinion that they were created rather to feel than reason, and that all the power they obtain, must be obtained by their charms and weakness. " Mary Wollstonecraft Composed in 1790, Mary Wollstonecraft s seminal feminist tract "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" broke new ground in its demand for women s education. A Vindication remains one of history s most important and elegant broadsides against sexual oppression. In her introduction, renowned socialist feminist Sheila Rowbotham casts Wollstonecraft s life and work in a new light."

Forgot this one, too - #DannyBoy also stole my sandals. I don‘t know when I read this before but I made notes. Either Vic lit or gender studies in undergrad or something in masters…or both. Anyway, it‘s dense and kind of rambling but makes lots of good points that are frustrating because 200+ years later we‘re not much better off. Interesting to read with Middlemarch because Rosy‘s everything Wollstonecraft warns against. #52Books23 #nootherprompt

A feminist in her time, Mary was far ahead yet no doubt trying to voice the same things that so many other womxn had, before her (which we are STILL shouting today). Her words would make for powerful signs at a march; no doubt she marches with us in spirit today.

Shown: a statue of her that sparked ‘controversy‘ placed by feminists in London, in November 2020.

I‘m going to hazard a guess I owe a lot to Mary and her coterie. I bet this work is also going to be highly quotable!

Cedricsmom Now, is this the mother or the daughter? 5y

Wollstonecraft's biography is as colorful & fascinating as that of her daughter, Mary Shelley, & her friends. In January 1798, four months after her death, her husband William Godwin shocked the public with his memoirs of his late wife. He chronicled her suicide attempts, illegitimate children & love affairs. Mary was viciously attacked by writers during her life & after, but her championing of women's rights based on a rational society would 👇

vivastory be enormously influential for 20th century feminist movement. She was a pioneering voice for self-determination. #MusicalNewYear #SisterSuffragette @Cinfhen 5y

I know this is an important book, and there were a few good quotes, but it was so hard to read! I read lots of older books so it isn‘t because of when it was written, she just went on and on. I ended up skimming the last few chapters. I guess I‘m glad I read it, but it won‘t be a re-read. #litsyclassics #v @Sarah83

I have to admit that I‘m struggling with this. Her writing style is so unfocused! But I have often wondered if Jane Austen read this. When she describes soldiers, it‘s Wickham to a tee. And her harping on women living for feelings is so Marianne from Sense and Sensibility. Not to mention the theme of unhappiness due to an unequal marriage. Anyone else see these connections? #janeAusten #feminist

saresmoore Excellent observations! It‘s been too long since I‘ve read this. 6y
readinginthedark That totally makes sense! Austen was definitely a feminist, and it looks like this work was circulating right before the ten-year period in which all of her novels were published: https://laurengilbertheyerwood.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/jane-austen-and-mary-wol... 6y

What better way to close out the first quarter #Booked2018 than with the original #FeministClassic? Mary Wollestonecraft was fighting the good fight for women's equality long before most women even considered the possibility. It's amazing, given the time, that it was published at all. It's also very sad that so much of it is still relevant. Why don't we get it by now? Oh yeah, because we don‘t all want to.

Ok... I‘m going to jump into this #LitsyClassics challenge! Although full disclosure, it will probably take me more than one year to finish. I tried to pick a lot of classics in Sci-Fi, by women, or about historically minority groups/issues to keep me motivated.😉 The dates in parenthesis are ones I can use for the #192019 challenge too, and the second set for the #MountTBR Challenge. The * is for a re-read, I haven‘t read it since high school.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa There you go @Gezemice ! Definitely some we can read together😉 6y
Gezemice Wow, Awesome! Even the same title :) I think I will probably take more than a year, too. We talked about a Dune readalong, maybe we can do it next year! And Vindication will definitely be soon, I know that. But no new classics for me until I am done with War and Peace. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m fine with either as long as we take it fairly slow. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I think we had discussed the chapter a day type of group, and if the chapters are huge, we could probably pair it down even more. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage That sounds like a good plan, depending on how long they are. 6y
Gezemice It does not matter to me. As long as it is started after I am finished with War and Peace, which will probably last for another couple months for me. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Well maybe in the name of all the husbands, boyfriends, male friends who have recommended this one to us in the past, we‘ll aim for a Valentines Day start date. 😉 Do you think 3 months out could be possible for you? Or pushed out further? 6y

Gezemice I hope the husbands/boyfriends/male friends are not wrong. I have seen an absolutely horrible TV adaptation (at my husband's insistence) which made me want nothing to do with Dune.
