Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream | Hunter S. Thompson
104 posts | 197 read | 2 reading | 91 to read
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page.It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken. Now this cult classic of gonzo journalism is a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I didn‘t think I‘d like this and I was right - I didn‘t...

It was free on Libby and it‘s ticked off #nevada on #readingUSA2019, but other than that....nope.

ljuliel I‘ve not read anything by this author, but from what I‘ve heard, I think he‘s a bit of an “ acquired “ taste. I doubt I‘d like his books either. 1mo
BarbaraBB I bailed on this one as well. Such a boring, predictable book. You should have read this one for Nevada 😉 1mo
Librarybelle But hooray that you could tick off Nevada from the list! 1mo

squirrelbrain @ljuliel - it‘s just a long list of drugs taken and the obnoxious things that they did as a result... 1mo
squirrelbrain I wish I‘d known about that one @BarbaraBB - the only other one I could think of was The Goldfinch and I‘d already read that... 😕 1mo
BarbaraBB Never mind, you‘re almost there 👍🏼 1mo
squirrelbrain Yes @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle - only 2 more to go.... At least I didn‘t leave Nevada to last, that would have been disappointing! 1mo
BarbaraBB Just two more? Wow! Do you have a good one to finish it? 1mo
Pamwurtzler Just two more? That‘s great!! 1mo
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - I‘m going with a John Irving, either Owen Meany or Garp.... should be good, hopefully! 1mo
BarbaraBB Both are great! 1mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s a bummer. My Nevada book wasn‘t great, either. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1mo

I really liked this one. The writing style worked for me.
It is rambling road trip travelogue told by a deeply unreliable narrator. And it has amazing energy and momentum.

But that's the feeling of the whole book. The writing has so much energy. Even the moments of reflection aren't still and quiet, they're bursting with thought and motion.

Trying to reboot a book jar practice I did once awhile ago: taking names of authors I've never read from a Strand bag, picking one and trying a book from them. I enlisted my fiancee's help for this pick (the photo session got a little silly, as all our photo sessions tend to do). Hunter S. Thompson is not someone I'd pick of my own free will, but the jar has spoken, so I'll give him a shot and see what happens!

Leftcoastzen She‘s adorable, I love Hunter, you might be surprised, something about the drugs kicking in around Barstow.... 10mo

I‘ll do the #MarchHare and the mad #Hatter in one book here. Because look at them. There‘s a hat (and Johnny Depp who plays Tim Burton‘s mad hatter) and a crazy friend, and their tea is of the Long Island variety, and they really know how to throw a party.

I‘m kinda in the fence about this one. While I think that the experimental side is cool, I‘m not crazy about his style. And it was very hard to read a book in which all the characters were despicable. I‘m cool with unlikable characters, but these ones were too much for me. There‘s a section where they discuss attacking a young woman which was particularly disturbing.

#RoryGilmoresReadingChallenge

TheAnitaAlvarez Btw, Jessica Hopper wrote an article on Vanity Fair about the copy department in Rolling Stone and how these women had to re write EVERYTHING Thompson sent, which was very interesting. 1y

Oblomov26 Need to defend Hunter for me this is one of those stories packed with rage, despair and self destruction. It was a scream of pain about the end of a dream and a return to a stultifying normality. But it was a long time ago when I read this and perhaps I need to revisit. 2y

Ok. I wanted to like this... I really did. I liked the movie, not a favorite but like it, and thought the book would be better. I'm not a fan, though. There were parts that I think were supposed to be funny, but I didnt find funny and overall I was sitting here constantly thinking, "Are you kidding me!?"

RhiaWolfe I feel the exact same way. Honestly, i had to return the ebook to the library, and i was only half way through. I'm not sure I'll read the rest of it... 2y
cj82487 @RhiaWolfe I ended up finishing it bc it was a quick read, but even in the second part to the end I was just sitting here going "What in the world am I reading" lol. Just not my cup of tea 2y
