The Travelling Bag
The Travelling Bag: And Other Ghostly Stories | Susan Hill
41 posts | 18 read | 64 to read
From the foggy streets of Victorian London to the eerie perfection of 1950s suburbia, the everyday is invaded by the evil otherworldly in this unforgettable collection of new ghost stories from the author of The Woman in Black. In the title story, on a murky evening in a warmly lit club off St James, a bishop listens closely as a paranormal detective recounts his most memorable case, one whose horrifying denouement took place in that very building. In 'The Front Room', a devoutly Christian mother tries to protect her children from the evil influence of their grandmother, both when she is alive and when she is dead. A lonely boy finds a friend in 'Boy Number 21', but years later he is forced to question the nature of that friendship, and to ask whether ghosts can perish in fires. This is Susan Hill at her best, telling characteristically flesh-creeping and startling tales of thwarted ambition, terrifying revenge and supernatural stirrings that will leave readers wide-awake long into the night.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Four Twentieth Century ghost stories told in the classic style. Susan Hill has a skill for crafting a sense of the uncanny, to bring out the uneasiness in the reader as well as the storyteller. #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter 60pts + 1pt

As much as I enjoyed the title story, with its Victorian atmosphere and Holmsian feel, the contemporary stories "Alice Baker" and "The Front Room" best conjured the ghostly sense of unease for which I read supernatural fiction. "Boy Number Twenty-One", the remaining tale is a well written story, but didn't give me goose bumps. Overall, 4?, but "Alice Baker" is 4.5?

Although my October morning was bright, rather than dank, I'm always a little thrilled when the story I'm reading is set at the time of year in which I'm reading it 😊

I loved the title story, blending aspects of the ghostly tale, a Holmsian psychic detective, and Gilmanesque psychological horror. If there's such a thing as cosy horror, this may be it. I'm hoping the other stories, different as they appear to be in tone, are as enjoyable.

GingerAntics This picture is trippy as all get out!!! lol I just keep staring at it, trying to figure it out. lol 5y
Bookwomble @GingerAntics It's a person sporting a giant atlas moth on their face 🦋 It is pertinent to the story 😊 https://lifewithldub.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-attack-of-giant-atlas-moth-story.h... 5y
GingerAntics That‘s a real bug? Seriously? That is terrifying!!! I was trying to figure that part out; if it was photoshopped and of this was a real thing on a real person‘s face. 5y

GingerAntics Oh my god that‘s real. That‘s really real! It wasn‘t until I read the caption about seeing his teeth through the moth that I saw it. Holy night that is amazingly terrifying. I have no idea why. That is just really giving me the willies!!! 5y
quirkyreader @GingerAntics some species of moths and butterflies can get even larger that that. 5y
Bookwomble @GingerAntics You may find this story scarier than I did 👻😄 5y
GingerAntics @quirkyreader oh god. I‘m not sure I needed to know that. lol I could have possibly gone my entire life without ever knowing that. lol I have idea why this pictures freaks me out so much. Usually I enjoy butterflies. 5y

GingerAntics @Bookwomble @quirkyreader 🤣😂🤣 I seriously had that thought after I saw his teeth. 🤣😂🤣 I was thinking, oh god I‘m having a nightmare about this tonight. 🤣😂🤣 It‘s terrifying, but I can‘t stop laughing either. So many mixed messages. 5y

Hill's stories are in the tradition of M. R. James & E. F. Benson, creepy, supernatural and paranormal, rather than outright horror. Starting this collection of 4 short stories, I'm pleased to find the first one using the Psychic Detective format, mainly because it allows me to mention the Thomas Carnacki stories of William Hope Hodgson and the John Silence stories of Algernon Blackwood, because who doesn't love an egregious literary reference?

Bookwomble The narrative request for an "intriguing story", the Victorian gentleman's club frame, and nested narrative voices are comfortingly familiar, but punctured somewhat for me by my internal reading voice being that of John Finnemore... https://youtu.be/d9PUlyE_w6I 5y

Bk3 is done! She writes very old fashioned ghost stories, much like the old Victorian ones that you get in those bound books of short stories. Or even like Edgar Allen Poe. They all have very ambivalent endings, almost leaving on a question which most paranormal tales don‘t do these days. My favourite was the last one, The Front Room, evil old ladies are terrifying!👵🏻 #HSreadathon #24B4Monday #SummersEndReadathon

Bk3 of my #readathons is a small book, this time it‘s horror short stories. In the title story, a paranormal detective recounts his most memorable case, in Boy Twenty One a lonely boy makes a friend, Alice Baker tells the story of an office worker who always smells like decay & The Front Room, a devout mother tries to protect her children from their evil grandmother. Sounds like a good nights reading! #HSreadathon #24B4Monday #SummersEndReadathon

#BookMail Pt2 This is the 3rd in these editions of Susan Hills work I‘ve managed to acquire. I‘ve already read Printers Devil Court & have The Woman In Black on my #TBRcart ready to go. I‘d never heard of this small volume of Hills work, can‘t wait to dive in on a stormy night, when the house creaks & it sounds like the wind is moaning.⛈🌬

Love Susan Hill and horror-thriller fiction and this is a great little collection of stories. Easy read - perfect for a long bus trip (incidentally, where I read my copy!) Perhaps not the most complex and involving thing ever but enjoyable nonetheless.

Personal highlight - 'Alice Baker'. Really creepy and stuck with me for a while.

Wednesday is #reccomandsday ! This beautiful book contains four short ghostly stories. They are not very scary but after reading them all (in one evening! ) I was left feeling a bit spooked anyway. Not all stories are equally great. Boy Twenty-One was my favourite! A little creepy but more about the strength of friendship. Alice Baker was the creepiest one for me. I'll definately come back to these stories, great for cold months and tea!🌟🌟🌟🌟

My first trial of Susan Hill and I am a fan. A collection of creepy short stories, this book has made an impression that will not fade quickly. I enjoyed the mysterious mood that was quickly established quickly for each story and the lack of fleshing out the details forced my mind down the tortured paths with her. An excellent choice for my Halloween horror!
