Thnx so much to @DrexEdit for tagging me for the top 21 of 2021! 🤗 Cant do 21, but here‘s my top 5. So, here are the 5 best books I read in 2021, with links to the respective reviews on my YouTube channel. ☺️

4. To the Lighthouse

DrexEdit Wow! That's a terrific list! I'm looking forward to listening to more of your reviews. I agree completely with your assessment of To the Lighthouse. I read it once in college and then again in the last couple of years and I think it reads better the older you are and have experienced time and thoughts of legacy the way Ms. Woolf writes about them. 4w
TH3F4LC0N Thnx so much! 😊 To the Lighthouse really was a fantastic book! It was also more readable than I was anticipating! I also have a copy of Mrs. Dalloway I‘m looking forward to reading, but I‘m gonna save that for 2022! 😁 4w

Finally read this beast of a book! This space here is far too small to tell what I thought of this book. Suffice it to say, Moby Dick truly is probably one of the five greatest books ever written, and almost assuredly the greatest written by an American. If you wanna know my full thoughts on this masterpiece, you can check out my in-depth review/analysis of it at:

https://youtu.be/NxWyTM1fAcI

In closing, read this book if you haven‘t! 🤯

I was wondering about the relationship between Quequeg and Ishmael. Google came up with this. Crain asserts that Melville used "cannabalism" as a euphamism for "homosexuality."

Graywacke Trying to remember what cannibalism is referenced in MD. A lot of the homosexual references are pretty brilliant and funny. Lots of strategic ‘q‘s in there too. 2mo
the_hibernator @Graywacke I haven't gotten very far yet, so I don't know how much about cannabalism is really mentioned. 🤷 2mo

Thanks for the tag @Nessvamusic !!
1. Probably anything over 500pgs, but I have a lot of books that are more mental chunksters haha Like The Great Gatsby isn't that long, but I really hate that book so it feels like forever when I'm reading it.
2. I'm not a big audiobook person because my mind tends to wander, so I like to read them & I prefer physical books to ebooks as well, even for chunksters!!

TheAromaofBooks @Nessavamusic - I know so many people love it so I reread it as an adult thinking maybe high school me just didn't get it... but no, I still hated everyone 😂 6mo
The.Great.Catsby It's really not a book that is easy to absorb. I did the same thing, thinking the book would be better as an adult. But its just too dense. The 2013 movie though 😍😍😍😍😍 6mo

Ishmael sets sail on the open sea with a man bent on getting Moby Dick, a whale who bit off his leg.

Overall I enjoyed listening to this book, I think it‘s way longer than necessary and could have cut out quite a bit without interfering with the story.

GingerAntics I‘ve never been able to do this story because it‘s so implausible that a whale attacked a human being. That just doesn‘t happen in the wild. That‘s a phenomenon known only to whales in captivity. 8mo

This...needed an editor. I'm glad I completed it but I'm not entirely sure why it's a classic, unless it's that it captures 19th century whaling in pretty excruciating (and unnecessary for the story) detail. There are certainly some parts that are very well written, but they almost get lost in the listing of whale sizes or similar matters.

Kalalalatja I felt the same way. I was bored out of my mind during most of it 8mo

A couple Moby Dick prints for my Moby Dick/nautical inspired bathroom. Yes, I am one of *those* strange Moby Dick people.

Got them from this Etsy shop (and if Moby Dick isn‘t your thing, there are many other literary themed items): https://www.etsy.com/shop/DareToDreamPrints?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_...

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Omfg, you have a nautical Moby Dick bathroom too?!?! ❤️😱❤️ My husband thinks I‘m crazy! I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! 😂🤣😂 10mo
shortsarahrose @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That‘s so cool! 🐳 I needed to get a shower curtain after my new tub surround was put in (my old one had a door) and remembered seeing Moby Dick ones before and it went from there 😁 painted just a couple weekends ago and putting the finishing touches up now. 10mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Hehe, mine started with a wooden sperm whale decoration from Michaels, the arts and crafts store. The bathroom was already done in shades of blue from the previous owners and I liked it enough to keep it the same. 🐳❤️ 10mo

You know social distancing and quarantining should be over when you start reading this for fun 😅

Ok ok, so I read this for a book club and I gutta say, it wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. There were some boring parts (unless you‘re into marine biology), but there were plenty of riveting dramatic moments, a lot more homo eroticism than I anticipated, and overall a huge amount of literary value that can be discussed for aaaagessss 🐋🌊🦿

This passage is an accurate representation of the book. So so so many details of details of details about whales. And yet, at 81% through the book, we have yet to see the actual great white whale. I‘m determined to finish, but I‘m ready for some action. I predict he will show up 10 pages from the end, there will be a big old battle, and everyone will die.

CorLie 1-a few years ago there was a Moby Dick read where famous people each read a chapter a day. It adds some variety. 2-someone told me to read it like a mid 2000s blog by a guy with a weird whale obsession. Sometimes he tells you interesting stories, but sometimes he just wants to talk about harpoons. It helps get through the draggier passages. 10mo

And there is all the difference in the world between paying and being paid. The act of paying is perhaps the most uncomfortable infliction that the two orchard thieves entailed upon us. The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven. #mobydick

With long rambling tangents and a slow pace I should hate everything about this but for reasons I can‘t explain this structure worked for me and I enjoyed reading this. I was surprised by the more humorous moments throughout because I‘ve always assumed this was a serious Classic and was pleasantly surprised that it was so much more. Very glad I decided to join the #MobyDickBR this month because I know I would have never picked this up without it.

Herman was brilliant. He knew how to hook his readers with a fascinating story and humor. And, once he hooked them, the readers were forced to read essays to better understand the complexity of the grand whale. I enjoyed the story; I didn't enjoy the unraveling of the whales' physical attributes. I wanted Starbuck to rebel and form a mutiny badly. On some level, the crew must have harbored an appreciation for their Captain Ahab. #MobyDickBR

Honestly, I don't think I would have got through this book without #mobydickbr. I enjoyed the earlier chapters more than some of the others. I found that it had surprising humour but sometimes it was a little bit of a slog for me and if not for a timeline I don't think I would have finished it.
I used the Big Read version as my audiobook version. Overall am glad I finished it as I have always been intrigued by this Great American novel.

Wow, I finally finished it!! I would never have completed this one without the #MobyDickBR so special thanks to @Clwojick for hosting!!

A soft pick for me. I can see its value & appreciate its designation as a classic, but the scores of pages rambling on about life philosophies and the differences between sperm and right whales just weren't for me haha The actual story was good, but it was sometimes hard to find. 😂

Finishing this was one of ⬇️

It is done. I did so much reading in the last 3 days trying to catch up with 70+ chapters of #mobydickbr, and finishing it today, and I'm truly proud of myself. Now, when it comes to the story... The first 150-200 pages I enjoyed in Melville's writing, humour, characters. But then it got tiring and it took a lot of discipline for me to finish it.
⬇️⬇️⬇️

zezeki There were interesting chapters certainly, but there were a lot more of those that weren't, and in the end I didn't particualry care about any of the characters, apart of Queequeg. I understand why this is a classic, and I do feel it's an ode in some way to the sea, sailors and amazing creatures that are whales, and I'm glad I read it. But I wasn't emotionally involved, and that's main reason I'm giving it a so-so. 14mo
