I really felt the atmosphere of the 1660‘s in the first half of this story. I‘m not sure Mary would have been so outspoken in court or as daring in visits , but maybe so since she was raised in a privileged home. The second half of the book was unexpected…
Overall, 3/5⭐️s
On target 🎯 for my Alphabet Challenge using my shelves.

Wife Somewhat disappointed that the story‘s end was tied up with a “happy” end. I didn‘t buy the romance 🤨. (edited) 2mo
Wife Also, words like “comforter” and “ponytail” snapped me right out of the 1600‘s. The earliest use of comforter for bedding (that I could find) was in the 1800‘s. And I couldn‘t find an origin for the ponytail hairstyle, but I don‘t think it was 1600‘s. 2mo

This book was phenomenal. A Puritan woman in 1662 Boston fights for a divorce from her abusive husband while navigating a world of religiosity, suspicion, and gendered hierarchy. I applaud Bohjalian's construction of this story, which shows the historical roots of sexism in our country. It was also a rollercoaster; I was on the edge of my seat. It was tough to tell how it would end!

This book almost broke me. (See my previously posted TW.)
This speaks for how extremely well written this book is, that you can commiserate with a fictional character almost 400 years ago. It was difficult to believe it was written by a man, so accurate were the emotions. My first Bohjalian but it won‘t be my last.

Be prepared for a bunch of #Screamathon posts today. 😃

Don't forget about the Weekly Prompts, new this year! I have so many options for Week 1, I have no idea which one I will end up choosing first! Here are some contenders:

☠ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
☠ Nightbooks
☠ The Witches

Laughterhp Oo what a great week 1 prompt. I‘ll have to think hard about what I can read and watch 🧐 4mo
See All 20 Comments
4thhouseontheleft @Laughterhp Thanks! There are so many great ones to choose from! I‘m excited about the new Nightbooks movie, so I think that will be the one I choose first 4mo
mdm139 I got There‘s Someone Inside your House for week one, but I also have Nightbooks. I don‘t think I can wait until week 3 for my witch book though, so I may have to get another one (like I need another excuse to buy books lol) 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @mdm139 I have 3 Witch books on my list, the audiobook hold for one of them accidentally came in early from the library, so I'll be reading that before Week 3 too. I'll probably do this one during Week 3 4mo
Kimberlone First time participating! Looking forward to it :) 4mo
Bookzombie I‘m probably going with Dracula and I think I‘m going to watch the 1931 movie since I have never seen it. 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @Bookzombie interesting tidbit, Dracula is what spurred me to start #Screamathon a few years ago! I had started reading classic gothic horror novels in October, and it snowballed from that! @Kimberlone Welcome to the fun! 👻 4mo
Bookzombie That‘s cool! I have meant to read Dracula for years. I think I fear I will be disappointed. I saw the 1992 movie when I was in middle school and that was an impressionable time so it has stuck with me. Lol. 4mo
RainyDayReading I‘m going to have a hard time coming up with something for week one! Because I‘ve already read most of the books that have adaptions (even if I haven‘t watched them yet). We‘ll see if I can figure something out. 4mo
Mavey Hi Alisia! This is Maeve, I'm participating in the Screamathon for the first time! I had a doubt, the completion of prompt no matter how many times one does it, will only account for 10 points once, right? Or does it increase with multiple attempts, say if we read more books with Witch in the title, it will still be one 10 points? 4mo
vivastory I just signed up. Looking forward to it 🎃🍁👻 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @RainyDayReading Nightbooks just came out on Netflix. Have you read that book yet? 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @Mavey hey! That‘s a great question! I‘ve set it up where a prompt can only be completed once. Hope that helps! 4mo
RainyDayReading @4thhouseontheleft Nightbooks? Never even heard of it! What‘s it about? 4mo
Mavey @4thhouseontheleft Oh okay, thanks!😊So excited to be a part of it! 4mo
4thhouseontheleft @RainyDayReading I haven‘t read it yet, but it sounds a bit like a 1,001 night retelling, mashed up a bit with Hansel & Gretel. It‘s a middle grade book. 4mo

This book was the monthly selection for a book club that I belong to. I thought that I‘d be bored with the topic,as I have previously read about.I‘ve also visited Salem on several occasions.I was wrong, this book is not in the least boring.Although it is historical fiction, it reads like a suspense novel. I had a hard time putting it down.I absolutely love the way that it ended.I felt that it did a good job touching on modern day issues.

Finished this two days ago. This book tells the story of Mary Deerfield, a married young woman living in 1662 Boston, as she pursues divorce proceedings and is drawn into a witch hunt. It was interesting to read a book from a perspective where the Bible, God, and Satan are so literalized for the characters. I was intrigued at the beginning, my interest really waned in the middle, but the ending brought it back to pick status. Spoilers 👇🏼

Kimberlone The “twist” about Peregrine seemed pretty obviously telegraphed to me, so that was no surprise, but I was not expecting the resolution at the end. While I was happy that Mary got her HEA and escaped her fate in Boston, I wasn‘t invested in her extramarital romance (as awful as her husband was). The change in tone at the end/epilogue was quite jarring compared to the very dour, cold aspect that the rest of the book established. Mixed feelings. 4mo

This is another example of the audiobook making it somewhat hard to concentrate on the overall story. The old fashioned English style of speaking was somewhat distracting at first but once I got used to it I enjoyed the story more. The overall premise was fascinating and I enjoyed watching this strong, independent woman fight against the harsh restrictions of her time and community. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

It‘s 1662 and Mary Deerfield, a young Puritan woman, lives in Boston when her husband Thomas‘ physical abuse becomes too much to bear. She breaks from tradition and makes a request to be granted a divorce on the grounds of cruelty. Mary‘s decision to assert herself rather than submit to the will of her husband and the Elders causes a cascade of unexpected events, including being accused of witchcraft, a charge that could lead to her execution.

One thing I find conspicuously absent in the author's description is the fear a person feels when admitting to being abused. The embarrassment and shame. I wonder, though, if that is only an effect of modern times? 🤔

I liked the previous two books by Bohjalian, The Red Lotus and The Flight Attendant, better than this one. This one picks up toward the end but was a little drawn out. It is the story of an abused wife who seeks a divorce, only to become a victim of the town‘s superstitions and parochialism when she is accused of witchcraft. The descriptions of colonial life in early Boston were interesting and accurate but some of the chapters are repetitive.

Of course I was thinking of the Hulu series SALEM when reading this book, of Mary Sibley. I can‘t begin to say how much I loved that show. The two Mary characters have similarities…I can see the one from this book taking a similar path to escape her vile demon of a husband. Forks are important in this story, and there is real history behind the ridiculous superstition. Read on: https://www.interesly.com/dinner-forks-considered-tool-devil/

You have to be careful when writing about the Puritans. They were so bored and miserable that they had to accuse each other of witchcraft for fun, and it usually got them killed. I worried that 400 pages of Puritans would be too much. But here is a woman in the 17th century who is trying desperately to escape her violently abusive husband. And forks, ‘the devil‘s tines‘…have much to do with it. Think of Mary Deerfield as a budding feminist.

I enjoyed this historical fiction novel about Mary Deerfield attempting to divorce her husband and being tried as a witch in Boston in 1662. I didn‘t mind the language and felt it gave an authentic feel to the setting. However, for all of the potential dramatic tension, I did not find it to be a compelling page turner. I always wanted to know what happened, but I could easily set it down between readings.

Hmmm, this is a slow pick. Based in the 1600s, but thee‘s, thy‘s, and thou‘s became monotonous with the slow pace of this book. I really liked the last quarter though. I very recently read Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch also set in the 1600s, so I think I was influenced by my greater interest and enjoyment of that book.

Tamra I‘m so glad I read your review because I started the audio book and I‘m finding the old English is distracting and off-putting in that it feels contrived! I will probably bail because I have others calling my name! 😏 7mo
marleed @Tamra Dang, the story was not enough of a page turner for me to find the thee‘s and thou‘s critical to the storytelling. I was also heavily influenced by the recent experience of another witch story set in 1600s Germany, inspired by a real family. It was funny and the Germany setting was an interesting piece of history. 7mo

A Puritan tale of the first divorce proceedings in the American colonies. The writing is very authentic to the time, which will likely grate on some readers, but that built a very strong sense of atmosphere & highly evoked colonial America. Well-crafted slow build plot that didn't feel plodding. It wasn't gripping enough to be a thriller, but it was a book I kept wanting to get back to & the mystery element to it was definitely entertaining.
