People We Meet on Vacation
People We Meet on Vacation | Emily Henry
"What happens when best friends with nothing in common come together, fall apart, and fall in love? The Vacationers meets When Harry Met Sally..., from the author of Beach Read When Poppy met Alex, there was no spark, no chemistry, and no reason to think they'd ever talk again. Alex is quiet, studious, and destined for a future in academia. Poppy is a wild child who only came to U of Chicago to escape small-town life. But after sharing a ride home for the summer, the two form a surprising friendship. After all, who better to confide in than someone you could never, ever date? Over the years, Alex and Poppy's lives take them in different directions, but every summer the two find their way back to each other for a magical weeklong vacation. Until one trip goes awry, and in the fallout, they lose touch. Now, two years later, Poppy's in a rut. Her dream job, her relationships, her life--none of it is making her happy. In fact, the last time she remembers feeling truly happy was on that final, ill-fated Summer Trip. The answer to all her problems is obvious: She needs one last vacation to win back her best friend. As a hilariously disastrous week unfolds and tensions rise, Poppy and Alex are forced to confront what drove them apart--and decide what they're willing to risk for the chance to be together"--

In April 2020 I read Beach Read and abdolutley loved it! So when this one came out I had to pick it up. I enjoyed the friends to lovers storyline, all the trips they went on, and them ultimately dealing with their own mental health. I wasn't a huge fan of the slower pace and not having the duel perspectives between Poppy and Alex, I tend to like seeing both perspectives, but overall a great, light read.

I liked this one better than Beach Read. I loved the way she incorporated different places into this book. The locations really became like another character. I liked Poppy and Alex and how everything came together. It was a cute story and a fun summer book to read. I thought it was mostly predictable, but I still enjoyed it!

I'm not usually a fan of friends to lovers romances, but this was a slow burn romance between friends that spans across ten years of summer trips they've taken together

I‘m really loving this author. Sometimes when I‘m reading serious books, it‘s nice to pick one up that‘s a lot lighter. Highly recommend if you like #chicklit and want a lighter beach read.

I have mixed feelings about this. Ultimately, I liked it. I was invested in the characters, so I read until the end, but I did contemplate not finishing the book. It‘s very well written, I just found there were way more details than necessary and honestly a simple conversation between the main characters could‘ve ended the book at any point. I also feel it lacked the male character‘s perspective.

I‘m not a huge romance reader but as far as romance goes this was really good! I‘ve come to realize I think I‘m a bigger fan of the friends-to-lovers trope than anything else. I really enjoyed the two main characters and found them endearing each in their own way. I‘m not really sure why the author gave the story this title but it doesn‘t really represent the story very well (weird complaint but there you have it). Overall enjoyable! 🌟🌟🌟💫

We leave for Hawaii bright & early Saturday morning (I can‘t post on any other social media that we‘re going away since my MIL posted my address online 🙄). I think I‘ve narrowed my book selection down for the week. I‘m trying to not overpack & being realistic about how much I‘ll be able to read between kids & the few fun activities we‘ve planned. I‘m looking forward to some relaxation for the week.

AmyG Have the best time! And the Grohl book is so good, but will now sort of break your heart (Taylor Hawkins). 2mo
ncsufoxes @AmyG thanks! After what happened I wanted to read it sooner, knowing that it‘s probably going to be sad. I love Dave but I loved Taylor immediately. When I heard the news it broke my heart, plus the anniversary of Kurt Cobain‘s death the other day. Nirvana was everything to me as a teenager, I still listen to Nirvana & Foo Fighters (& so many other bands from the 1990s) & embarrass my teenager 2mo
AmyG I, and my son, loved Nirvana. I remember when the Smells Like Teen Spirit video and song was released....blew our minds. That Dave would lose 2 bandmates, one like a brother, breaks my heart as he is such a sweet, kind guy. 2mo

Ok, so I admit it. I am a ridiculous romantic. Maybe it‘s the eternal optimist in me, maybe it‘s because I have my own far-fetched, soppy, meet-cute and whirlwind love story so the novels don‘t feel unbelievable. Who knows? I just don‘t read much romance, just not my reading preference. But Emily Henry seems to be a winner for me. This ‘friend to lovers‘ story hooked me with the characters, and the past present storyline. Have to say, I loved it.

March 25, 2022 I think it has been about a week since my last update. Today I spent some well needed time soaking up Vitamin D in the patio while reading this book. It was a bit slow in the beginning but I am like half way through (if not more) and it has gotten better. If I were to rate this, I would give it 4 / 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A wonderful story that you can read in one sitting. Strong "When Harry Met Sally" vibes revolving around a couple of friends who start out as acquaintances and soon become best friends. Poppy's job as a travel writer allows them to take trips every summer. As in all romcoms, they fight their feelings not wanting to destroy their friendship. Strong character development and an opposites attract love story make for an enjoyable time.

What a delightful gem. Poppy & Alex's friendship was so sweet. I enjoyed the alternation between current day and previous summers, building to the last trip. Henry did a great job creating such loveable characters and really set the scene each time she moved the story to a new location.

Also, I'm glad I read this in the middle of a Canadian winter because I don't think I could have handled that air-conditionless Palm Springs apartment otherwise.

Poppy & Alex are best friends who made a pact that no matter what, they‘d always have their “Summer Trip” together. What happens when one trip, changes the dynamic of their relationship forever? I loved this book! Friends-to-lovers trope with lots of witty banter, unrequited love & sexual tension. I liked that she revealed what happened between them in the past 12 years over the course of the book. The change in timelines made it hard to put down!

I‘d give this book 3.5/5 stars. I didn‘t care for the authors writing style. That said it was a good fluff fiction piece- great for vacation or if you‘ve just read something heavy and want to keep it light. The book follows Alex and Poppy over 12 years of vacations. I enjoyed their travel stories. It‘s a “will they or won‘t they get together” type book. I loved the Alex character.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This was a reread for book club, and I loved it just as much as the first time around! I think it‘s one of my favorite in the friends-to-lovers trope with one of the best romance endings. They still get their happily ever after, but in a way that feels more realistic. The audiobook is also very well done - Julia Whelan is quickly becoming a favorite. Highly recommend this one - already looking forward to rereading it again one day!

A really fun read for the summer holidays, with a great format, leaping back and forwards in time across annual vacations taken between best friends. Emily Henry‘s books aren‘t fluffy romance, they can be pretty angsty and definitely give you the feels. The contrasts between the 2 main characters gave this more interest too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This story is about two best friends, Alex and Poppy. They met in college and it‘s their tradition to take an annual summer trip together. Two years ago, their friendship crumbled and they stopped talking. Poppy knows that she has to make it right with Alex, so she reaches out to him and convinces him to go on one last trip together. In Palm Springs they encounter a few mishaps, but Poppy is determined to fix things between them no matter what.

bryn.gross Will Poppy be able to fix what is broken, or will she create something new entirely? I would recommend this book to anyone who likes novels with romance and humour. This book is written in first person point of view. The author establishes this point of view by telling the story from the viewpoint of Poppy and her experiences. We get to know the thoughts of Poppy, but no other characters. She uses the pronouns such as I, we, us and our. 4mo

Cute but I guess I was hoping for a little bit more substance a little less fluff. I really enjoyed the sharp, witty dialogue and I like Julia Whelan‘s narration but the character of Poppy started to grate on my nerves. “…it‘s less about the places we go than the people we meet along the way. …most of all, it‘s about the ones who stay, who become home.”
I LOVED this book. Emily Henry does a great job of crafting characters and stories that take readers on delightful journeys. On the surface, the stories seem fluffy—Hallmark Movie-esque. But they are so much more than that. The characters are complex. The plot and resolutions make you think. I‘m officially a fan!
