I listened to this book and I highly recommend it that way for others because McConaughey does such a great job narrating.
This isn't a memoir, which I didn't realize when I started. The short stories about his life are at times fun, uplifting, sad, tense, and a whole range of other emotions. He also offers insight to how he lives, like words of wisdom for life.
Much more enjoyable than I expected.
Loved these snippets into his history and current way of life. The book style is definitely unique, almost like a mashup of memories while also interrupting himself and these stories with blurbs, poems, thoughts and declarations. Many of which resonated with me in some way. Kinda bummed it wasn't a longer read.
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book. I had never been the greatest fan of Matthew McConaughey, and my only interaction with him was at ACL many years ago and he was dancing to a band right in front of my view of the band. I was annoyed to say the least.
But listening to this it makes me realize that he worked hard for his good luck and green lights to be where he is at today. It‘s a fun audiobook narrated by him.
I‘m not a huge McConaughey fan but our upcoming Texas trip & many rave reviews made me pick up the audio version. I could have skipped his advice sections, but his crazy stories were excellent! From bird CPR to floating down the Amazon to taking meetings while driving cross country, he shares his wild stories with his trademark relaxed attitude & optimistic glee at the unexpected nature of life. Incredibly entertaining even if you don‘t know him.
I went back and forth between really enjoying this and being a little irked by it. This is his story and he tells it well (the audiobook is great), but some of the places where he tried translating his experience into general guiding principles fell flat. I‘m not sure how broadly his experience as a happy-go-lucky golden boy with financial resources translates, and he didn‘t really acknowledge that it might not, but beyond that, a fun listen.
I‘ve always loved Matthew McConaughey as an actor but also heard a lot of stories about how he lived his life unconventionally. I loved hearing these stories first hand and what he‘s learned throughout his life. I listened to the audiobook because I love hearing authors (especially with a voice like his) read their story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was listening to Mayim Bialik‘s Breakdown podcast with McConaughey and she made this book sound so interesting (and well he did too) so I put a hold on the library audiobook. It already came in and OMG you have to LISTEN to him read this. It‘s been a total trip already and I‘m just about one hour in.
Alright alright alright. Good book. Interesting stories. Part travel journal, part motivational speech, and part philosophical manifesto. Interesting for sure. Fun read.
I LOVED this book.
I won't lie. There were some parts that were super cringey for me and I wanted so badly to fast forward. But like everything in life, that passed. Greenlight.
I want to meet Matthew, but there's a huge chance I wouldn't like him.
This book took me through quite a range of emotions. He really is funny, and I'm glad he narrated the book. I never really thought of him as a serious actor. But clearly, I'm here for the romcoms.
Oh my this audio book was amazing. Matthew is one of my favorite actors. He's the narrator of the audio book. His life is so fascinating and he's so open and honest about personal things. I felt like he was in my home having a laid back conversation. His laugh is adorable. 5 ❤❤❤❤❤ big hearts. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Memior
OMG, this book! I don't normally read celebrity memoirs because, I mean, why? But this book is great. Matthew certainly has had an exceptional life and truly has a unique outlook. Highly recommend for road trips. Get the audiobook. He narrates it. 5 ⭐s. Read for Jul2021 Bookclub.
So I am very torn. I often say that we shouldn't judge a biography by decisions that the author made in their life, but this usually goes for lives we cannot imagine, there are many things here I am going to judge him on. Having his brother pretend to be blind to keep his dog around (disabled advocate's have talked about this enough for people not to brag about this behavior) or the gross night he met his wife and coursed her against her wishes👇
I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed this book! I'm not a Matthew McConaughey fan -- not that I dislike him, just a little ambivalent? But this was an incredibly entertaining listen. It made me laugh out loud multiple times (although I'm not sure he's being intentionally funny). It was just what I needed for a hellish commute!
Also, knocks off the #colorintitle prompt for #Booked2021!

This week's #tbrpile also listening to the tagged on audio library loan. Slowly catching up with the #ThornBirdsReadAlong the writing was a bit too much like Gilead which I finished today so I had trouble with the first chapter or so of TB but ready now!
Matthew McConaughey is an intellectual and a master in storytelling. He bares his soul in these pages and illuminates the inspiring, beautiful and heartbreaking aspects of life that make it worth living. It is an ode to our humanity. Audiobook must!
“We cannot fully appreciate the light without the shadows.”
“I‘m not perfect; no, I step in 💩 all the time and recognize it when I do. I‘ve just learned how to scrape it off my boots and carry on.”
Greenlights has hung on for months now. I don't read celebrity books but I am kinda curious...hummm
I used to think this guy was a talentless, shallow, pretty boy, without depth. A “Mimbo”, the male version of a “Bimbo”. Just not the sharpest tack on the bulletin board. Then In saw “Dallas Buyers Club” and realized how wrong I was. And he has made quite a few movies with depth after that. I became a fan. Yes he has a unique eccentric character and that has its appeal. The book shows his depth with the McConoughey style. Really enjoyed it.
I loved this! McConaughey calls this an "approach" book, a "playbook" based on the adventures in his life, with stories taken from his journals. The audiobook is narrated by the author, so if you like his good 'ol boy voice you'll enjoy that aspect of the book. He reads with passion and humor, you just can't beat a memoir narrated by the author who is really in to telling their story. Alright, alright, alright! Greenlight! ?
What a wonderful listen! I highly recommend audioing this one as it is voiced by McConaughey himself and who doesn‘t like listening to him talk am I right?!☺️ great lessons, stories, and really just nice knowing that even celebrities have to stop, pause, and wonder “what the heck am I doing?” Very down to earth individual and an absolute hoot!
Can he just narrate every single audiobook I ever listen to again?! Seriously I did not want his book to end. I absolutely loved his story and the personality he lent to his book. There are alot of great lessons learned from this one.
You either love him or ... dismiss him. See capsule review below Full review here https://www.facebook.com/1082882538/posts/10222571912181520/
To be fair, I did laugh out loud and picked up some advice. But then there are a whole lot of things like this: “There‘s no ‘g‘ at the end of ‘livin‘ because life is a verb.” Overall, it was fun to romp through the mind of someone whose life has gone extraordinarily well with seemingly little effort. Though he would say that he has caught many greenlights in his life by actively avoiding/eliminating the red ones. Cannot really argue with that.
