ARC pub date July 22

Our MC is having a rough time. Her husband has been having an affair, and has left her for the mistress a woman named Maggie. And now the MC gets diagnosed with breast cancer, and she decides to name her tumor after her husband's mistress
This is not really humorous (even from a dark humor POV) but it is very human. I really love how the MC starts to reevaluate everything, to start to see herself and her husband in new ways👇

ChaoticMissAdventures My favorite bit is when she starts to tell her children stories she learned from her own parents. And I loved the best friend relationship she has with Darlene, May we all have support people like this ❤️ 13h

I am about 150 into the tagged so hoping to make a big dent in it this week.

Death of the Author is the next #CampLitsy25 read, having much higher hopes for it then the last read.

I need to tuck into Spent and get it back to the library! I grabbed Immaculate Conception on audio from the library so will start there on my daily walks.

Written in 1928 but this "lesbian classic" (as my cover calls it) could easily have been written this year. The language is easy and the prejudices of that day still linger, even as strides are made. I felt for Stephen throughout the book, she is drawn as a vivid and complex character, even when she is doing unwise things I found myself rooting for her (maybe for her to get a grip, but still, rooting).

Graywacke Looks like heaven. The books sounds terrific 2d

I am ready for some summer reading!! I have 3 books to finish up for June which has been super grey and gloomy here in PDX. But July is almost here and the sun has agreed to come out!

This was so interesting! I really loved the different POVs and the sharp change in the third act. I loved the look at privilege and how there are many layers of privilege.
This is also an interesting look at belonging. How we are "from" a place but might not "belong" to that place.
The writing is beautifully lyrical. This is short but very well done.

@dabbe #TLT (a day late)

Realizing like books I will read (watch) the first in a series and will rarely follow up with the rest.

Favorites:
Top Gun (I was obsessed with this as a kid!)
Grease (what a trip watching this again as an adult and realizing how dirty it was!!)
Back to the Future

??? Who is your favorite Batman??
He is by far not my favorite superhero (too whiny) but I loved Michael Keaton's version

ChaoticMissAdventures P.s. I watched Actors on Actors yesterday with Seth Rogan and Jason Segal and Rogan was talking about writing Superbad with his bestie at 17 and I just think that is amazing. Props to them and that movie. 4d
dabbe #yahooyou! L🤩VE your choices; they would be in my top ten! Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman, too! He's much more serious and studious, and I find those traits sexy as well! Thanks for playing and sharing. 💛🍿♥️ 4d

This year for #PrideMonth I wanted to challenge myself to read all of the letters in the Pride spectrum (well the most common at least - LGBTQAI)

I found that Intersex, Asexual, and Queer were the most difficult books to find.

Q- while queer is often used as a catchall category I was really looking for authors who specifically called themselves Queer, and it turned out harder then I had first thought.

These are the books I read.

willaful When I was looking a few years ago, I had the hardest time finding a book with an intersex character that wasn't absolutely horrific. Finally found Pantomime by Laura Lam, which is a very good read. 5d

I really have to stop just buying books. This Emezi book is NOT for me. I normally love their work but I am only about 30 pages in and I hate everything about it. There is a lot of sexual abuse going on. I think it could have worked if there was more of a lead in but I just feel gross reading it.

A lyrical YA story about a boy trained as an art their and the boy he falls in love with that changes everything. Very Greek with Icarus and Helio as our main guys! Low pick. It is hard when people pour so much of themselves into a book. This is a good introduction for people who are new to body positivity, eating disorders, and queer and disabled body talk. As someone who is familiar with the issues there wasn't much new for me here. A lot of the book was Instagram quippy talks.
I don't recommend the audio. There are a lot of quotes she reads from I think her IG communityand it started to be confusing.

A Single Man: A Novel | Christopher Isherwood

Pickpick

A gorgeous and sad novel. This is my first Isherwood but will not be my last. I thought George was a sympathetic and complex character and in his grief we can see limits to human emotions that are not so often pondered on in this beautiful but tragic way. I really enjoyed this.
Also this was dedicated to Gore Vidal and I had not known about their relationship - mentorship where they write letters to each other for 40 years until Isherwoods death

nanuska_153 That's such a nice edition! 1w

A Single Man: A Novel | Christopher Isherwood
post image

I read the book yesterday and decided I needed to see the movie immediately after. And I am so glad I did. What a sad and gorgeous story.

The cast of the movie is perfect. The house. Goodness the House!! Beautiful. There are a few changes they made that I am not too sure about, but definitely made things more dramatic.

Normally I find age gap stories super sketchy, but Isherwood and the producers did things in a way that didn't feel creepy

nanuska_153 Colin Firth is so amazing in this movie, and you couldn't expect less, but Tom Ford really knows how to dress him elegantly 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @nanuska_153 YES! it took me a minute to realize it was The Tom Ford. The clothes are exceptional. I loved Nicholas Hoult's fuzzy sweater. It made The character of Kenny seem cozy. 2w
nanuska_153 @ChaoticMissAdventures he was very fluffy and huggable with that jumper. Yes it's amazing someone can be so ridiculously talented to direct this and Nocturnal Animals and design those clothes! 1w

The Prophets | Robert Jones, Jr.
post image

Continuing my Pride book recommendations, today is Juneteenth (the day the Black folks of the US celebrate the end of slavery). So here are 6 books I feel are proper recommendations for the collision of these two celebrations

If you have not read The Prophets yet, get on it. Rarely has a book made me gasp out loud, this one did it and I fell utterly in love with Isaiah was Samuel. Your heart will break, but in really important ways.

ChaoticMissAdventures Sorry a lesbian Caribbean pirate story based on true events?? How can you say no? Jacquotte Delahaye's story is truly remarkable, and she was what I would wish every heroine could be. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures A Black father makes amends with his gay son through letters written on his deathbed in this wise and penetrating novel of empathy and forgiveness. Utterly gorgeous 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures All I can say is it's a classic for a reason The language can be a bit difficult so take your time if this is your first read. 2w
See All 8 Comments
ChaoticMissAdventures Freedom means many things as we move along from the first Juneteenth. But always for Black Americans there is an undercurrent of the government trying to cut people down. This one looks at that, looks at the AIDS crisis in NYC 1980s and has an amazing parade of recognizable cameos that were fun to recognize. 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I will never get over this book. I will sing it's praises till the end of time. You are going to root for Loretta and Staxxx throughout the book, and see how they love each other through the worst conditions, all the while Adjei-Brenyah is going to be teaching you about the prison industrial complex. This is a near future dystopian unlike any I have ever read before. What would happen if prisoners got brand deals to fight to the death for freedom
2w
BarbaraBB High praise! I will hunt for a copy of The Prophets and I have one of Chain-Gand but haven‘t read it yet. 2w

Mehso-so

Glad I am done looking at this cover.
This is my second McQuiston. I find her characters annoying. I thought I liked Kit but then he quickly got on my nerves when we switched POVs. I guess I dislike books where I cannot really see why one character likes the other. Theo was mostly an ass. Everything revolves around mis or no communication.
Too much sex to be considered YA but not enough maturity for olders. 20 somethings might like it

ChaoticMissAdventures I was listening to a podcast talk about P&P and how one of the reasons it works is b/c the secondary characters are flushed out. And I think a lot of modern romances suffer from not doing this. All of the 2ndary characters here feel like complete afterthoughts and stereotypes. And what is up with how much time these 2 have on a planned EU tour? As someone who has been on a couple this annoyed me. 🤣 2w

Starting this ARC with a US release date of 22 July

A woman goes to dinner with her husband, and finds out he is having an affair. Soon after she is told she has a tumor. She names the tumor Maggie - her husband's mistress' name.

From GR: "she embarks on a journey of grief, healing, and reclamation."

It is supposed to have a lot of Chinese mythology (told by narrator to the narrators children)

I love the edges but goodness do I hate this ugly cover. Every time I reach for the book I think about how much I dislike the cover 😂

This is my second McQuiston and I feel like they just might not be for me. Though I did like the movie version of RW&RB I really didn't like the book, so if their stuff is ever adapted again I would try that medium.

Listen to this mostly on a long drive this weekend. A haunting and original books. Narrator Chris has lost her wife Bo when Bo gives birth to their baby. Unfortunately in this timeline when you harm someone the government gives you an extra shadow as warning to others, so the baby gets one within minutes of being born. Unfortunately for The Kid Chris also has an extra shadow. What are they going to do without Bo?
Very well written with many 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Plot devices and author choices that make the story feel fresh - like when and whose names she chooses to reveal. I love authors who don't explain their worlds. People get extra shadows from the government. That is all we are given, no fake scientific explanation how this works. The focus is on the humans, our family and how they are treated. And a bit on the government the creeps working for it and the tactics. It is really effective for the story 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures (3/3) there is one twist in the third act I did not see coming which was great but then I found the resolution a bit clunky and rushed and that didn't totally work for me. 2w

We are just about half way into the year!

How are your book goals looking?

Are there any goals you are changing or bailing on?

How are you feeling about your 2025 reading?

CatLass007 My Goodreads goal was 100 books. I just finished 101. I‘m having a tough time settling on my next book. I‘ve listened to the first part of five different books and think I finally settled on one. One of those books is short stories, so I can go back-and-forth on that one. 2025 has been a good year for books, but not for much else. (edited) 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @CatLass007 goal met! Everything else is extra. I go through weeks where I just cannot settle too. I love the library for this, just trying a bunch of things until something clicks . 2w

I adore Henry and his fun family, and though I thought Len a bit of an ass all the way through I also felt it was realistic.
The pacing on this was great and the side characters added to the story and the vibe. I do wish the third act was a bit more flushed out. There were words that should have been said.

Friday #Pride book recs!

Ace and Intersex books are not very common. Here are three each I recommend.

Ace = A-sexual this is such a scale! Angela Chen's nonfiction book Ace helped me so much to understand that range. I really recommend it.

**I originally added a book that after more research (I read it years ago before I knew better) appears to be harmful. This is an updated graphic.

ChaoticMissAdventures Curious about an asexual romance? It felt like 2 separate ideas that could never meet but this adorable romance changed my mind. Good for people who like love triangles, fake dating tropes, and character who just respect each other. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures If you have not read River Solomon what are you waiting for?? This one is fantastic. Aster is Ace, they are also a mechanic on a space ship. The universe that Solomon has created is large, detailed, and creative, and the characters are interesting to follow. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures Sci-Fi/Fantasy Queen Le Guin this is about a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants spend most of their time without a gender. Called a groundbreaking book for both sci-fi and for intersex stories. Well worth everyone's time. 3w
See All 9 Comments
ChaoticMissAdventures This is a classic for intersex novels. It has been a long time since I have read it, but the vibe and the heart of the story and the family vividly have stuck with me. Please be aware this is an older book so may contain some outdated ideas or language. Still worth the read. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures I struggled to find intersex books I have read. so I am adding one that I plan to read this month. This one has great ratings on GR and I am excited to get into it. I have read a few articles about the author and they sound lovely. 3w
TieDyeDude Thanks for sharing! My wife and I are both ace, and I love discovering books with ace characters. I tend to avoid romance novels because they don't speak to my experience, but I might consider Kann's book 😉 (edited) 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @TieDyeDude I am not a big romance person either, I am trying another by Kann this month, there are not a ton of Ace books out there! 3w

Carrie Fisher was his BFF and sometimes roommate. Joan Didion was his aunt. He is an actor, directed one of my favorite comfort movies (Practical Magic) and his family is incredibly tragic. Mostly swirling around his sister's murder in 1982 Dunne's book tells the complex story of growing up in a Hollywood family. It is a bit crude but also funny & heartfelt. I didn't recognize his name when the book came out but his stories here are memorable

I keep picking up and putting back things when I see a lot of violence (or randomly the word clitoris in a sentence it has no business be in? Is that an adjective now??)
All suggestions appreciated! ❤️

ChaoticMissAdventures I picked up a Mary Oliver and this one by the gorgeous girl who read at Biden'a inauguration 3w
mcctrish I second Amanda Gorman ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 3w
MatchlessMarie When I was her age I found a book written in poems I really loved at my library called Girl Coming in for a Landing I‘ll tag it here. For the longest time it was my “book with a blue cover” mystery because I couldn‘t remember what it was called for the longest time 😂 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @MatchlessMarie oh this looks perfect! She is going into middle school next year and this is just the right age. Thanks!! 3w
Kitta Also going to suggest Amanda Gorman and Mary Oliver! Also around that age I was obsessed with Shel Silverstein 3w

#allhailthebail
This is my #bookspin and I am bailing. But I only made it 20 pages in so not marking it as traditional review bail, just realized this language is not for me. It is super intense Irish and 20 pages in I haven't understood anything. That is totally on me. I am sure my annoyance of the McConaghy book earlier today isn't helping. I just want a book I can sink right into that makes sense.

BarbaraBB On this one we agree again at least 😉 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB I am sure it is lovely. It sounds amazing and the reviews of the people who could read it were glowing. I think I just don't read enough traditional Irish writing to give this a go. I do wonder if it would be easier over audio, but the audio isn't available at my library. 3w
Kitta I read this but didn‘t rate it on Goodreads for some reason - usually that means I was conflicted and didn‘t enjoy it as much as expected. (edited) 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kitta if I don't write about a book on one of the GR/Storygraph sites I will never remember I read it! 3w
Kitta @ChaoticMissAdventures it‘s only marked as read! That‘s it! Not even a date. I remember reading it a while back (10 years ago at least) but not the content of the book. My ex really loved it, maybe that‘s why I didn‘t rate it? We were still together when I read it and I didn‘t want to disagree. I only occasionally write reviews outside litsy, but nearly everything has a star rating 😆 3w

#WeeklyForecast

I have started the tagged. So far it is great, recommend for people who find Hollywood and Joan Didion fascinating. Lots of famous cameos but the root of the story is the Dunne family of 5.

Well of Loneliness is chunky I need to get cracking on
I grabbed The Pairing on audio for my daily walks
Thunder Song needs to go back to the library next weekend
Henry Hamlet's Heart looks like a quick read and is my #doublespin

Mehso-so

3⭐ I am an outlier on this author. This is my third book of hers, and I am only reading it for #CampLitsy25. I could have skipped it and saved 2 days of reading...
I just don't understand. I find the characters, their motives and actions, utterly silly and unbelievable. I think that the language she uses is good but the way others gush about it I just don't feel the same (there is nothing I want to take a highlighter to).
👇

ChaoticMissAdventures I am constantly annoyed at how McConaghy depicts people who do not want children. No matter their motivation she finds a way to "change their mind" or in this case equate someone wanting to care for someone else's children to be like she changed her mind on having kids. She said she didn't want to bring babies into this world, that doesn't mean she hates children and wouldn't care for already born ones. This is such a wrongheaded look at CFBC. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures I understand Dom and the children better than Rowans actions, but I think the miscommunication trope is way too heavy handed in this. It was annoying. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures Also! You are going to sleep with a guy who you think might have killed your husband? Come on. And what the first unsupervised adult on the island is going to be the one he sleeps with? I could have done completely without all that. 3w

BarbaraBB Great review. I get your annoyance even though I loved the book and was convinced you would too. We‘ve been so in sync lately 😉. Looking to discuss it further on Camp! 3w
squirrelbrain Like @BarbaraBB I loved this book, but I did have to suspend my disbelief at points. The author has a particular style, a lot of which would annoy me more in another book but somehow I can ignore here. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain I looked multiple times to see if it was fantasy or magical realism coded because the stuff going on was so unbelievable to me. I know she is super beloved. My ex mother-in-law is the one who originally convinced me to read her which I find odd because she usually cannot handle anything that makes her suspend belief 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB first Emily Henry now this! I can win for popular authors! And now I am feeling a reading slump I need to push through! Shake it off. 3w
Ruthiella I 100% agree with you. I actively hated this book. Beautiful writing but not one thing made sense to me. No one behaved in a believable way. 3w
LiteraryHoarderPenny I have the same problem with this author. Lots of gushing love and I just shrug 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella this and the Wolves one, I put them both down and just felt unreasonably annoyed. The situations she writes are just so out of pocket ridiculous. Migrations I just sort of felt meh about. Like @LiteraryHoarderPenny I just shrug. Not for me. 3w

At a cafe reading #CampLitsy25 book 2 which is due back tomorrow thinking about our conversation earlier today about if a character felt judged by the waiter as I overhear a conversation by 2 women that started "Well when my dad left my mom for your mom...." ?. I am a nosy cafe person!

Kitta 😂 3w
Ruthiella That would catch my attention too! 👀🤣 3w
squirrelbrain Lol, so funny! And such an intriguing, delicious conversation opener! 🤣 (edited) 3w
BarbaraBB Sounds like a great first sentence of a book! 3w

Low pick
This is my first Henry, I for sure should not have read it directly after Giovanni's Room. I spent the first bit super annoyed at the rich white people. Then scared a coworker when I tossed my headphones off when a characters "nipples pinched" when she saw someone ?. The story grew on me until the end then I was annoyed again. I guess I see what others see, it just really isn't for me. I have one more of her books in my office...

monalyisha This one & People We Meet on Vacation are my least favorites by her. She may not be for you, and that‘s okay, but this isn‘t her best work (imo). 4w
willaful Definitely my least favorite by her. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @monalyisha @willaful good to know! I can see the charm but some people might like in it but this isn't really my genre. I have one more I bought at the same time to try 3w
Suet624 Hahaha. I‘ve never read any of hers, but it seems pretty universal that this book is the least favorite of many folks. 3w
TheLudicReader I have tried two Henrys and DMF either. 3w

Happy Pride Month! Last weekend I did classic, classics of Pride - which because they are older skewed very male. This weekend I want to do some ladies with Modern Classics (published after 1980)
All of these are FANTASTIC and worth the read.
Stone Butch Blues was written by a trans author it is novel about a lesbian that is heartfelt, sad, and for many an informative look at what being Butch in the 50-60s was like. Please check TW
5 ⭐

ChaoticMissAdventures A little bit cheesy but overall a wonderfully told story of new love and finding yourself. Real in the way the other people around them were treating them. The book has been banned from many school libraries and publicly burned in Kansas City, so you know it is worth the read. 4 ⭐ 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures Nevada is a cult classic about a trans woman I enjoyed messy Maria. She has been living her truth for ten years and she still doesn't have it all figured out. The books ending is a bit controversial and if you get later versions the author talks about why she did what she did to Maria and James 4.5 ⭐ 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures A semi-autobiographical book this is a lesbian classic! A woman in a cult starts to minister and falls in love with one of the converts! The writing is obviously studied, and I enjoyed the characters. 4 ⭐ 4w

ChaoticMissAdventures Sarah Waters is a queer lit icon. this one is one of her most known, I was engrossed the entire time with where Nan was going. Up and down in life. Searching for herself. The synopsis always states it is about her and Kitty and their relationship, but I found that to be such a small part of the book, them together, and the focus instead being on what the life of someone who dresses, and behaves differently than society expects is like. 4w
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Love all of these books too, especially Tipping the Velvet and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit! Stone Butch Blues is a tough read but so good too, I learned so much from it. 3w
Kitta Only read Tipping and Oranges from this list! Stone has been on my radar for a while though. 3w

4⭐

This was a bit predictable, things that felt like the author were setting up to be a twist too early and easily identified. But overall I enjoyed this. There was some depth - but Charles and James having family drama and a sense of not being seen. I enjoyed the writing and really liked the ending.

"One day I'll weep for this. One of these days I'll start to cry."

5⭐

This is maybe my 4th time reading this and (my memory is not good) each time I am in awe of Baldwin's language and how he weaves the story of Giovanni, Jacques, Guillaume, Hella and David.

This might be my perfect book. I love the heart, the tragedy, the setting is visceral and the characters are incredibly realistic.

BarbaraBB I read this so long ago I don‘t remember much. You make me want to pick it up again 4w
