The Happy Isles of Oceania
The Happy Isles of Oceania: Paddling the Pacific | Paul Theroux
23 posts | 12 read | 1 to read
Paul Theroux invites us to join him on one of his most exotic and tantalizing adventures exploring the coasts and blue lagoons of the Pacific Islands, and taking up residence to discover the secrets of these isles. Theroux is a mesmerizing narrator brilliant, witty, keenly perceptive as he floats through Gauguin landscapes, sails in the wake of Captain Cook and recalls the bewitching tales of Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson. Alone in his kayak, paddling to seldom visited shores, he glides through time and space, discovering a world of islands, their remarkable people, and in turn, happiness. A sharp, fascinating and highly entertaining book ... Theroux at his best Daily Telegraph.

Mehso-so

Admittedly this book was written at a sorrowful stressful time in the author‘s life, his wife having just told him she‘s divorcing him. So he‘s very sulky as he travels across Oceania in his portable kayak that he carries with him as he flies from place to place. But that doesn‘t excuse his utter lack of humility, and a serious superiority complex with his smug judgments about 90% of his encounters with folks. He starts by blasting New Zealand ⬇️

Texreader as a most dreadful place. And his favorite? Hawaii. Well, yeah, he splurged and rented a luxury room and hobnobbed with the richest people in the world. I could almost hear the name-dropping spilling on the floor. I did appreciate the travels, as I like travelogues, and his descriptions of places. And sometimes even his descriptions of people; honesty is not a bad thing. But judging a whole island of folks based on the few he encountered, well ⬇️ 7d
Texreader that unnerves me. I stuck it out because his kayaking was breathtaking. But sadly not enough to make this a book I‘d recommend. I wanted to hear about his experiences in #Samoa, and they felt about average for all his experiences. Islanders are fatty, fat, fat eating canned meat and tuna and cheeseballs, if we are to believe the author that this is true of every island dweller. So if you read it, be prepared. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 7d
Dilara Thank you for sticking with it so we don't have to! 😅 7d

Theroux thrives on unusual words, prompting me to want to start a #wordoftheday or week or whatever. That‘s not new to litsy. But it‘s new to me since I‘m continuously looking up words in the tagged book. Mom @Doll8455 and I, both avid readers and fairly well educated, but we both had to look up “lugubrious” from this book. Now we toss it out often to one another! 😂 and then 😔

I‘ll start today with the word “ruction.” Use it in a sentence?

Texreader “The kids had a ruction over early-to-bed time.” Does that work? (edited) 2w
Doll8455 My dad said my brother always caused a ruckus. Might have been taken from the word ruction. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I like to think I'm fairly smart, but I find myself looking up words, sometimes multiple times across a few books before the meaning sticks. I did skip out on extra SAT prep classes so...🤣 2w

The author ridicules Thor Heyerdahl to the ends of the earth and then there‘s this statement: “Probably the most obnoxious aspect of Heyerdahl is that he appears to display a deep bias, bordering on contempt, against Polynesians.”

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!

If you ever have a desire to read this book, be aware there is a lot of this.

The author is thorough, and 80% into it, I‘m getting a ton of detail about every possible island in Oceania. I‘m not fond of his constant criticisms (Wikipedia calls it a strong stream of irony, that‘s not what I‘d call it) of pretty much every single person he meets, and judgments of swaths of people based on those he encounters. But as usual I enjoy reading about ⬇️

Texreader his trek itself. This chunkster of an ebook is one of the reasons I read so few books in October, and only this one for #Samoa #foodandlit. Still going though. 20% left! 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Good to know! I'm delaying Samoa & Algeria until 2026 since I've fallen behind in Latin America. It's just easier for me to track them if I fully pause. I have this book and Coming of Age in Samoa on my shelves, so I'll likely read both. 2w

The worst of the author‘s invective is against the French. It‘s a wonder this man has any friends, but then again, his wife is divorcing him and he‘s on an extended solo outing. 🧐

But his contempt for the French may be justified (sorry all my French friends). At the time he wrote this book the French were nuking Pacific islands mercilessly. France, at least at the time, was the world‘s largest supplier of nuclear weapons.

SamAnne I‘m finishing up Richard. Power‘s Playground and may have to read this. 3w

Well, Samoans don‘t sound very nice at all. The author doesn‘t have much nice to say about Tongans (from Tonga) or New Zealanders for that matter. #Samoa #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

AnnCrystal ...🤨🥺... 4w
Bookwomble Seems likely to say more about Theroux and his attitudes than it's likely to legitimately say about whole nations of people? 🤨 4w

marleed A friend/former coworker of mine is America Samoan. She‘d return to Samoa every couple years for an extended stay. One year when she showed up to work I could see some intricate tattoo work peeking out as she sat. I was fascinated so she showed me the artwork on both thighs and its historical significance. She was in her late 30s when she had it done because she wanted to make sure she chose the tattoos that would mean the most to her. 4w
lil1inblue @Bookwomble Almost my exact thought. 🎯 4w
Texreader @AnnCrystal @Bookwomble @Dilara @Soubhiville @Amiable @lil1inblue Theroux doesn‘t seem to be kind to anyone. Here he is quoting someone else, but he‘s made similar judgments about countless others so far. If he didn‘t have such a superiority complex, it‘d be a fantastic book reading about his adventures. He is just going through a separation from his wife while writing this, so maybe he‘s just in a cranky mood. 4w
Texreader @marleed That is really cool. I‘d love to quiz her all about that. 4w

Reading my book and being snubbed by my 🐈‍⬛ (blending into the chair on the left). Her dad is out of town and he‘s her primary human. So daughter and I just get attitude when he‘s gone.

“Fiji is like the world you thought you left behind—full of political perversity, racial fear, economic woes, and Australian tourists looking for inexpensive salad bowls (though why anyone would think a race of Queequegs, proud of their cannibal past, might excel at making salad bowls is not only a cultural mystery, but proof that tourists will believe almost anything as long as they are comfortable).”

Cooking on the slope of a volcano on Savo Island in the Soloman Islands. The eggs they refer to are megapode eggs.

The author hasn‘t made it to #Samoa yet, but this was very interesting food. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

The author is still in #Australia, so this isn‘t food from #Samoa. Nonetheless I feel compelled to post the dishes eaten in northeastern Australia: flyswisher stew, fried barramundi, snorkers and googs, roast chook. To be honest I haven‘t a clue what these are. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

TheKidUpstairs Barramundi is a delicious fish, and I'm pretty sure roast chook is just roast chicken? The others though, I have NO idea 🤣 1mo

When I posted the first part of this paragraph a short while ago, and I complained about how petty the author had been already in this book, I hadn‘t even finished reading the whole paragraph. And he proves my point! He‘s petty yet again! A period after the word cathedral would have been appropriate. Then he belittles his literary compatriots back home. If this bad attitude doesn‘t end quickly I may bail. #foodandljt #Samoa @Catsandbooks

The author is hiking in the woods of New Zealand. This would be a lovely quote but for the author‘s pettiness up to this point. He has brutalized the Māori and New Zealanders.

For example: “Others evolved into enormous and complacent specimens, like the spoiled and overfed children I had seen in Auckland…” & “the most terrible aspect … was that the New Zealanders themselves did not seem to know what was happening to them in their decline”

⬇️

Dilara So disrespectful! 2mo

I‘m getting a little head start on #foodandlit with my first book for #Samoa

@Catsandbooks

Cortg This book would be right up my alley! I paddled across the Chesapeake Bay yesterday between the Bay Bridge(s) and back yesterday. One of my bucket lists things. 2mo
Texreader @Cortg 🤯 That‘s impressive!!! 2mo
Cortg @Texreader Thanks! I placed a library hold on this book 😀 2mo
Texreader @Cortg I‘m not too thrilled with it yet. He seems to dislike the people of New Zealand quite a bit and doesn‘t have any qualms about saying so. Hopefully he becomes enlightened or improves his embittered state of mind. 2mo

Soubhiville Oh interesting! I‘m going to watch this, I bet there will be some really cool mostly unknown books that show up with this challenge. 2y

Bookwormjillk This is going to be a fun one to research. Thanks! I‘m starting with my library‘s copy of 2y
Gissy I don‘t know well how to enter the books in the form. Do I have to read the books in the order of the countries mentioned? Sorry, I‘m not not good understanding these things. But is so fascinated because as @Souhiville said, there will be a chance to know about books or authors unknown to me. 🤗 2y
BarbaraBB @Gissy you don‘t need to fill them in there, but it might be handy to see the countries of which the challenge exists. The challenge focuses on Litsy though: Just read a book set in as many of the countries of Oceania and tag us and use the hashtag #ReadingOceania24. That way we can all share our books for the various countries and other will be able to find them easily! 2y
Gissy @BarbaraBB Okay 👌 📚🤗Thank you 2y
Deblovestoread Not that I need another challenge but I‘d like to join in to read about these places, if that‘s ok? 2y
squirrelbrain @Bookwormjillk - I have that on my list too. I found it on Everand (Scribd) so I just hope it doesn‘t disappear before I get to it, as they have a habit of doing. 2y
squirrelbrain The lovely Holly @Hooked_on_books sent me two books specially for this challenge. ❤️ Holly has managed to get a copy of this one from the library so we‘ll buddy read it very soon. 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m also going to read this one fairly soon (bought used for 60p) as it will cover a few countries / islands. I‘m probably going to double-dip on this challenge, depending on what books I can get hold of for the other smaller, more obscure, islands. 2y
Bookwormjillk @squirrelbrain Everand has been on my naughty list lately. I‘m thinking of canceling (as soon as #LitsyTOB24 is over of course.) 2y
squirrelbrain @Bookwormjillk - they had Mobility for #LitsyTOB24 but it disappeared. 🤷‍♀️ It‘s not actually published here until tomorrow so I‘m hoping it reappears (or becomes available on Audible) 2y
Hooked_on_books I have a little stack I picked up from my library to get started on tomorrow. I feel like I have a leg up, being in the middle of the Pacific on Polynesian land! I‘m excited for our buddy read @squirrelbrain ! Do you want to get started tomorrow? (Jan 1) 2y
squirrelbrain Yes, let‘s do that! @Hooked_on_books Not sure how far I‘ll get as I‘m working (again) tomorrow, and then the rest of the week is going to be manic. 🤨 2y
BarbaraBB @Deblovestoread Of course!! We‘d love to have you joining us 💚💚 2y
