“When a man speaks he's merely tradition. He has at best a few thousand years back of him. But woman, why, she is the miraculous mouthpiece of posterity.”
1920s' America vibes in this one and a lot of philosophy.
A young, rich and tormented couple leads a decadent and self-destroying life while awaiting a tremendous inheritance.
Not the perfect gem of artistic integrity that Gatbsy is, but still great. follows the social and moral decline of 1910s WASPs Anthony and Gloria Patch. While awaiting an inheritance, they descend into addiction, debauchery, disinheritance, and relationship breakdown. The inheritance is restored at the close, but by then they are damaged A portrait of alcoholism and the idle waiting-to-be-rich and the connections between these phenomena
Things are sweeter when they're lost. I know--because once I wanted something and got it. It was the only thing I ever wanted badly, Dot, and when I got it it turned to dust in my hand.#Fitzgerald #bookworm #words #avidreader #booknerd #bookgeek #read
“I don‘t understand why people think that every young man ought to go downtown and work ten hours a day for the best twenty years of his life at dull, unimaginative work, certainly not altruistic work.”
#authorBirthday I wanted to post this earlier on Saturday, had a day ! On this date in 1896😱
F.Scott Fitzgerald was born .
June is upon us, nearly one week in. I‘m still so surprised we are in June already. 🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸
📖For my Witchy Littens, #LittleWitchBooks is a new independent publisher that focuses on Witch books for kids! Very cute offerings coming up. Follow them on Instagram or Facebook!
#OnThisDay in 1922, Charles Scribner's Sons published F. Scott Fitzgerald's sophomore effort The Beautiful and Damned. A review written by Zelda told readers to buy the book so she could purchase "The cutest cloth-of-gold dress." Later in life, Fitzgerald stated "I wish the Beautiful and Damned had been a maturely written book because it was all true. We ruined ourselves—I have never honestly thought that we ruined each other." #HistoryGetsLIT

Day 30: Lovers
The Beautiful & the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald👨👩👧
This is one of those books I always meant to read but never got around to it, so it sat there on my shelf collecting dust. Finally picked it up today, and boy aren't I glad I did. 1/3 through and I'm already lost in the world of New York's café society.
Finally bought enough books to get enough points to get a free book from the Penguin/Random House Readers Rewards program !🤗I collect Fitzgerald, so my choice was this lovely edition.Brightened up a frustrating day.🍸
I usually enjoy Fitzgerald‘s works but this book is a bit of a let-down. This is a story of two over indulged adults who live in the lap of luxury and party themselves into ruin. I detest the characters of Anthony and Gloria, and in a way Fitzgerald has done justice to their characters because they are meant to difficult protagonists. Overall, while the book portrayed the point it was meaning to, the story itself seemed unfulfilling.
went thrifting today and found this one🍃🌸 pretty cover
I wanted to read a classic, and also felt that maybe the Jazz Age would be a bit escapist right now. But I found it difficult to feel invested in, and the hubris - a man with a small inheritance just flat-out refusing to get a job, because it would be déclassé - especially leading up to the Depression, I just couldn‘t deal.

#inktober day 1: An illustration of a 1922 writing by Zelda Fitzgerald humorously reviewing her husband‘s novel The Beautiful and Damned in the New York Tribune. Her review is tinged with self-consciousness as she mockingly portrays herself as Scott‘s selfish wife, then discusses & defends the character of Gloria, an analogue of Zelda herself—right down to the bits that Scott stole from her diaries. #fscottfitzgerald #zeldafitzgerald #comic #art
Hm. This was a re-read, so I certainly went in with an expectation. I wanted to enjoy this much more than I did, and like I said in my last post, I just don‘t think I liked Anthony and Gloria - if anyone else has read this, I think we can all agree you‘re not supposed to like them lol - but that may have distracted me from the other aspects of the book. I won‘t give it a “pan” at this point though.
Got a new Canterbury Classic! Littens- what books are you collecting? #catsoflitsy
This is Trainspotting before it was even in Welsh‘s mind- hell years before he was born! The downward spiral of our not so likable protagonist and his equally unlikable vain paramour just never lets up- leaving an ending that is hardly satisfactory even with the reversal of fortunes. Some visceral stuff even now years later- one sees why Fitzgerald is a genius.
I‘ve been radio silent for a while but wanted to post that I bought two new reads today! Hopefully this will be enough motivation to finish The Beautiful and Damned - I‘m struggling to get into it (even though I‘m on page 149). I think I just don‘t find Anthony and Gloria very compelling. Will keep you posted!
I think it's wonderful that we can kiss and forget, and when we can't it'll be time to argue."
In the beginning, Anthony and Gloria have beauty and privilege, and awaiting their potential inheritance. They party with the elite crowd, overspent, and with no determination, no effort to work hard, theirs is a wasted life.

I‘m sorry to say I have yet to read this one. I definitely plan to . . . someday.

Anthony was glad he wasn't going to work on his book. The notion of sitting down and conjuring up, not only words in which to clothe thoughts but thoughts worthy of being clothed—the whole thing was absurdly beyond his desires
This is my next read, and another re-read. I LOVE The Great Gatsby and was so excited to read this... and was disappointed. I am finding that with a lot of my re-reads, when I was originally disappointed, I now enjoy the book years later. Curious to see if that will happen again.
I am now officially the proud owner of a first edition copy of Fitzgerald's The Beautiful and Damned! It is so beautiful! 😍😍😍
#winterWonderland Even though I said there wasn‘t a #snowball‘s chance in hell I was going to get through this book, I somehow managed 🙌🏻😂And if I‘m being honest despite its often bleak outlook and insufferable characters, “The Beautiful and Damned” is full of fabulous quotes about life, love and perspective.
“Here's to alcohol, the rose colored glasses of life” 🍷
“Things are sweeter when they‘re lost.” Or maybe 250 pages shorter!!!
“Broadway was a riot of light, thronged as he had never seen it with a carnival crowd which swept its glittering way through scraps of paper, piled ankle-deep on the sidewalks.”

This IRL bookclub title perfectly describes my feelings towards this book! I think the cover is beautiful but I‘ll be damned if I have to keep on reading!!! It‘s killing me 😬😖😩
Despite the fact that the two main characters are vain, lazy, selfish human beings I actually loved this look. Seeing their lives slowly unravel as Fitzgerald‘s poetic description provides insight into their innermost thoughts was fascinating.
Thank you so much Tatiana for my books and other goodies!!! Much love
Lots of #BookMail today 😀once again my daughter managed to add my #BOTM picks into my hubby‘s office mail 🙌🏻 and the tagged book is for IRL #bookclub ( I thought the cover was similar to my current read Mademoiselle Chanel) Did #BOTM not include a bookmark this month??? I love the new #BookDepository #bookmark collection ❤️
On vacation in Nashville, TN reading a book about a couple living their life in leisure. 😂Although I do have more ambition than the Patch‘s, I wish this vacation didn‘t have to end!
#QuotsyMay18 Day 8: It must be exhausting being tired of #Everything, of being both beautiful and damned.
Staying at an Airbnb in Los Angeles and it has so many great books on its shelves. Here‘s one for #thehoneymoonisover. #marchintooz

#Litsyclassics #letterb @Sarah83 Next up Fitzgerald. Not sure how I feel about this author - based on Amazon series influence- but love the time period involved. Let‘s get started.
"that illusion of young romantic love to which women look forever forward and forever back."
It's not Gatsby, but well worth the time. Beautiful prose.
When is it inappropriate to start a Go Fund Me page? Anyone? My parents just brought me home a Bauman Rare Books catalogue from Vegas. I have goosebumps.
