Heartstone: A Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery | C. J. Sansom
The epic fifth novel in the Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery series by the bestselling author of Winter in Madrid and Dominion Summer 1545. A massive French armada is threatening England, and Henry VIII has plunged the country into economic crisis to finance the war. Meanwhile, an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr has asked Matthew Shardlake to investigate claims of "monstrous" wrongs committed against a young ward of the court. As the French fleet approaches, Shardlake's inquiries reunite him with an old friend-and an old enemy close to the throne. This fast-paced fifth installment in C. J. Sansom's "richly entertaining and reassuringly scholarly series" (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review) will enchant fans of Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies, and The Other Boleyn Girl.

I realized as I joined the discussion of this book that I had forgotten to review it. I felt this one started slowly (which was partially impacted by my lack of reading time), but once it got going I really enjoyed it. There were a lot of things going on in this one, but I also love those layers of complexity and history. I also really appreciate that we get to know characters more in the series, but the mysteries are unique.

#ShardlakeBR

Daisey Thanks again @dabbe for hosting this buddy read and getting me to revisit this series! 3d
dabbe @Daisey YW! I have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it as well. I also love how Sansom hits us with completely new mysteries but gets us to love the characters more and more--well, most of them anyway. 🤣😍🤩 3d

Another winner in the Shardlake series.

This time Shardlake gets a case from the queen to look into a case. A young man has committed suicide after saying that something monstrous has happened to his previous pupil. The family lives in the south not far from Ellen‘s hometown, so he decides to look into her story as well.

An intricate mystery, fooling me to the end. I did not see that end coming.

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks Because he finds out the truth. Again, a man controlling a woman for his own benefit. What a society! I'm glad there was a good ending for her 4d
lil1inblue I found it so satisfying because there weren't real consequences in the other cases. We needed a win! Shardlake offering Josephine a position is yet another example of him helping those without agency. 4d
kspenmoll When I get to this book in the series ( only read first 2 ) I need to go to your pages & find your posts! The visuals are fabulous!!!! 4d

AnneCecilie I shows us who Shardlake is and his not just words, but that he follows through on what he thinks is right. And also one of the bad guys in the story got his punishment. 3d
dabbe @lil1inblue And hopefully she'll fill in nicely after the loss of Joan. 😍 3d
dabbe @kspenmoll TY! I try! The posts will be here for you, too! 😍 3d
dabbe @AnneCecilie Delightfully so! 🤣 3d
Daisey @lil1inblue This fits with what I was thinking. Shardlake is able to find answers, but there‘s not much of a feeling of success with the cases. Getting rid of Coldiron and keeping Josephine actually feels like accomplishing something good for the future. 3d
dabbe @Daisey I love how you predict a more positive future for Josephine and Shardlake. 🩵 3d
kwmg40 I'm happy the book ended with Shardlake getting rid of Coldiron and keeping Josephine on, as it does feel that some sort of justice has been served, at least in this situation. 3d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf It was a bit of an ignominious battle for both sides & most of the attention has gone on the loss of the Mary Rose. 4d
LiseWorks Just to show you are this constant fighting with the French was a waste of time 4d
lil1inblue I liked how the Mary Rose was almost another character in the book. I wonder if the battle doesn't get much attention because Henry VIII's marriages are so salacious that they become the focus of the period. 3d

AnneCecilie I remembered the ship scenes from my first read, but couldn‘t remember anything around it. I think this battle has just gotten into the overall history of the war between England and France in this period. There were constant fighting and probably fights that were more memorable. 3d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf 🎯🩵🎯! I think the most memorable part of this so-called battle is the drowning of THE MARY ROSE. And those poor men under the mesh cloths! 😱 3d
dabbe @LiseWorks Seems like they've been at it forever, doesn't it? 3d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

lil1inblue I really felt for Ellen. I can understand why she wishes Shardlake left well enough alone. Her story is simply heartbreaking. As is Josephine's. I hope we hear more about her story going forward. 4d
lil1inblue The Hobbeys - ugh. Is it weird that they gave me Wuthering Heights vibes? They all seem so utterly miserable. 4d
AnneCecilie They all seem to be caught up in situations they can‘t control (Leacon, Ellen, Josephine) or that they didn‘t fully analyse before jumping into it (the Hobbeys). If you‘re poor, you don‘t have much say in what happens to you, the rich control everything 3d
See All 9 Comments
dabbe @lil1inblue To have been such a free spirit before and now to be shackled to the asylum because you can't face the outdoors is totally heartbreaking. And to be in love and not to have it returned. For all of Shardlake falling in love with other women, I wish he could have fallen for Ellen and helped her out of her sheltered life. Well, the series isn't over yet, right? 3d
dabbe @lil1inblue 🎯🩵🎯! It was beyond hard to like any of them, yet I couldn't help feeling some sympathy when everything, EVERYTHING, came crashing down upon them. 3d
dabbe @AnneCecilie 🎯🩵🎯 And if the rich get caught (like Rich), they still can come out smelling like a rose ... maybe. 3d
AnneCecilie The King probably didn‘t care because Rich brought in the money 3d
dabbe We never got to see Calfhill; he was only alluded to throughout the story, but I truly felt for him, too ... especially to be desirous of other men during this time period and to be so afraid to be exposed that you kill yourself. Unfortunately, that still happens even in 2025. 🥺 3d
kwmg40 The Hobbeys were definitely unlikeable but at the same time, I found them really interesting, with all their secrets and complicated family relationships. 3d

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

OutsmartYourShelf I think Shardlake's own experiences, due to his physical disability, shows him how dismissive & sometimes cruel others are to those less fortunate. I think it shows some character growth when he stands up for the villager about to railroaded into a murder charge. (continued in other comment).. 4d
OutsmartYourShelf However, he realises that he could have stepped in later down the track & not brought down more disliking from others when it made little difference in the end, but that is not who he is.

He is naïve in that he often fails to consider any nefarious intentions, like from Rich - as soon as it mentioned another letter you knew it was going to tell West to get rid of Shardlake.
4d
LiseWorks There are some scrupulous people, and I don't think that has changed. Shardlake has a conscious which as a lawyer he tries to follow. 4d
See All 10 Comments
lil1inblue I agree with @OutsmartYourShelf - Shardlake's disability and his experiences have made him more empathetic. He's always taking in people and helping them - sometimes to a fault. He seems compelled to assist those without power or agency: taking in Guy, investigating Ellen's past (even when she didn't want him to), helping Hugh/Emma in the end. 4d
lil1inblue @OutsmartYourShelf I agree about his naivete. I think he is almost too just to predict the levels of evil he encounters. 4d
AnneCecilie I agree with you both @OutsmartYourShelf and @lil1inblue that Shardlake‘s disability and how he has been treat, has made him more willing to help the weak and the poor. Taking in Guy, but also Timothy earlier. But he does seems to get a little too caught up in his cases 3d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Excellent points. Shardlake's disabilities makes him extremely empathetic to others on the margins. And yes, he bought into Rich's scheme, never thinking that Rich would have no problem killing Shardlake off. Didn't he remember the guys who jumped on him in London? 3d
dabbe @LiseWorks Yet he will lie and be sly if he needs to--all for the good, of course. He is a complex man. 3d
dabbe @lil1inblue He is definitely someone I would want on my side! 3d
dabbe @AnneCecilie He's like Sherlock in that way. Once he get his nose into a case, he simply cannot let go until he sees it through to the end--no matter who may be endangered because of it. 3d

Sorry I'm so late, Shardlakians! I had a busy day with doctor's appointments and thought that tomorrow was 4/30! 😱

Thoughts?

OutsmartYourShelf No worries, everyone has lives that have to come first. Hope everything is ok.

I thought this was an intriguing case - one that I struggled to get a read on initially. There's also the follow-up on the Fettiplace mystery from the previous book, plus catching up with poor Leacon again.
4d
LiseWorks I liked the case here. It was a mystery until the end. It really showed society in not letting women do anything. And secrets! About rape again, men have the upper hand. Has anything really changed when it comes to young men raping women? 4d
lil1inblue This one had me baffled! I was honestly shocked by both cases. 4d
See All 12 Comments
lil1inblue One thing I liked in this was Barak and Shardlake's relationship. It was interesting that Barak was often the voice of reason this time. I appreciate how their relationship has progressed throughout the series. 3d
AnneCecilie I think the books get better with each one, and I think that‘s because I get to know Shardlake and Barak better. I liked that we met Ellen and Leacon again, but it is also had me missing news on Mark. I remembered the last ship scene from my first read, but didn‘t remember anything around it. And the conclusion still shocked me 3d
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Everything's fine, thanks for asking. Just catching up on the yearly appointments!

It did take a while to get into, didn't it? But when it got rolling, boy did it roll! 🤣
3d
dabbe @LiseWorks A play of absolute and total dominance. West couldn't stand that she had the BALLS to say “No, I don't love you.“ And then she paid for it with an altering of her life forever. 😫 3d
dabbe @lil1inblue Me, too! And I've read it before! I think I need to pay better attention when I'm reading! 🤣 3d
dabbe @lil1inblue Shardlake even basically tells Barak that the mentor has become the mentee. I love their relationship, too. 🤩 3d
dabbe @AnneCecilie 🎯🩵🎯 It was like I was reading it for the first time! 3d
AnneCecilie But as I read these books, I feel that the mysteries are less important than introducing us to Tudor times and how that time worked and what the time period was like for the working class, and what better way than a lawyer working on different cases? 3d
kwmg40 As has been mentioned by others, this one had a slow start and I did wonder if it would grip me as the others had. I should have known not to worry. Once I was about a quarter of the way in, I was hooked by the various storylines. 3d

1545 sees England at war with France again in the last years of King Henry VIII's life. Shardlake is summoned to see Queen Catherine Parr & asked to undertake an investigation into a case under the jurisdiction of the Court of Wards.

Shardlake & Jack Barak travel to Hoyland Priory & then Portsmouth where the English fleet is gathering, & Shardlake also tries to find out what really happened to Ellen Fettiplace who is still incarcerated in Bedlam.

OutsmartYourShelf This is an interesting one. The case at Hoyland Priory is odd & I couldn't get a handle on what exactly was going on there for a long time - the reveal was one that I had actually considered & discarded as being unlikely. The use of the historical sinking of the 'Mary Rose' was well incorporated into the narrative & added to the pathos at the ending of the story.
5d
OutsmartYourShelf What irked me a little was that everyone seems to be annoyed at Shardlake for varying reasons, even Barak is short-tempered with him. He seems to forget that the only reason he wasn't press-ganged into the war was the fact that Shardlake called in a favour. 3.75🌟

Taking place in Tudor England in 1545, Matthew Shardlake is approached by his patron, Queen Catherine Parr, to investigate alleged wrongdoings of a ward at a rural estate in Hampshire. As Shardlake delves into the case, he uncovers dark secrets, including abuse, corruption, and long-buried scandals, all while the shadow of war with France looms in the background. A fascinating, harrowing, and extremely well-researched read.

dabbe @Liseworks @OutsmartYourShelf @AnneCecilie ... Even though Dryrick and Furstowe are not upper class or nobility, they still lord it over others less fortunate. There was such a pecking order during this time period--the social pyramid where everyone knew his place. And women didn't even belong anywhere on it! 1mo
kwmg40 I find Dryrick an interesting character. His arrogance and bullying make him loathsome, but at the same time, it seems like he might have some good qualities in him and his unpleasantness might be caused by pressures or inner struggles that we don't know about. 1mo
dabbe @kwmg40 He does seems to really love his wife and children, so there is that. He also had to start from the bottom and work his way up. I find him to be quite insecure underneath all of his bravado. 1mo

Is this a self-loathing of sorts? 1mo

AnneCecilie I‘m starting to wonder what Calfhill saw. Has it do with the forest or is it related to the family in a way. The dog episode makes it obvious that there‘s a lot going on under the surface in that family 1mo
dabbe @LiseWorks Interesting question, and one I hope we find out! 1mo
dabbe @LiseWorks It makes me wonder if he wants to unleash his hidden rage onto the French since he can't do it at home. 1mo
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf I think Leacon has PTSD. HIs war stories told to Shardlake are simply heartbreaking. And something happened to Hugh and his sister. I hope Michael Calfhall is completely innocent. And I am HORRIFIED by what happened to Lamkin. My previous dogs were greyhounds. They're usually so gentle, but if you half-starve them like they were starved at Hoyland, who can blame them for fresh meat. 😱 1mo
dabbe @AnneCecilie She definitely saw at least one man die in the fire. Or was he pushed in there? 🤔 1mo
dabbe @AnneCecilie As awful as Abigail is, I felt so sorry for her losing her pet in such a gruesome fashion. And her admonishing Shardlake and telling him that he can't see what's directly in front of him--that definitely is foreshadowing bad things to come with this family. 1mo
kwmg40 I find myself wanting to know more about all the new characters. What secrets are they hiding? What are they thinking? Sansom is really good at giving all the supporting characters depth and mystery. 1mo
dabbe @kwmg40 I also appreciate the frustration that Shardlake feels when he can't quite solve the puzzles ... yet. 1mo

lil1inblue I can't help but compare H VIII's ego to that of the tangerine dumpster fire. Their thirst for power is insatiable. On a separate note, the treatment of and discussion about mentally ill individuals is not so different than some of the things I hear today. (And it was not that long ago that we were still institutionalizing people and performing lobotomies.) 1mo

Thoughts, Shardlakians?

LiseWorks I was so glad that Barack made up with his wife and that she was having a baby.. I don't understand why France is invading. I guess I forgot my high school history. This book is better than the others. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Good so far, although I can't get a read on what is going on with Hugh & family he is staying with. Anything I can think of doesn't quite fit. 1mo
AnneCecilie This book has me hooked so far. I feel that Sansom is using each book to look at something specific within the Tudor society and teach us about it without lecturing. 1mo

dabbe @LiseWorks Yeah, I'm glad for Barak and Tamasin, too. All I can think of re: France invading is that these two countries go back centuries filled with hate and wanting to dominate one another. England was still relatively new to being a kick-ass country, which is why I think H VIII is so cocky with all of his battles to show his strength. Perhaps France sees England as a threat--only 21 miles from Calais to the White Cliffs of Dover. 1mo
dabbe @OutsmartYourShelf Something bad is definitely going on! I've read this before, so you'd think I'd remember. But nope! I'm dying to see what's really going on behind the scenes! 1mo
dabbe @AnneCecilie He was quite meticulous with his research! 1mo
kwmg40 This one seemed to start a little bit more slowly than the others but now I'm quite invested in the various mysteries, and I'm enjoying learning about the historical context. 1mo
dabbe @kwmg40 Agree 💯. He gets more in depth as the books continue on, but we're so invested in the characters that we're okay with that ... I hope! 🤩 1mo
kwmg40 @dabbe I'm definitely OK with that. I don't mind slow beginnings if I trust the author enough to know that all the setup will be worthwhile. 1mo
lil1inblue I finally got to 50% last night and promptly fell asleep! There's so much going on in this book! I honestly have no idea where any of the storylines are going to end up, but I'm enjoying the ride! 1mo

Mehso-so

I loved the four books preceding this one but I found this one hard to rate. Either Sansom was doing something very clever and making the reader as frustrated with Matthew as Jack is, or he pitched this was slightly wrong. I still don't know because even if it's the former, I don't really want this level of frustration when reading. It was less suspenseful and more maddening.

Being fifth in the Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom, this was a wonderful work on Tudor history and culture.
Ah! A thriller after a long time was refreshing.
I always find King Henry VIII an amusing figure. Exploring the then England in the book was photographic. One could find themselves being annoyed in the way the characters operate, but it is just how 16th century England was.

I had one trouble though. The bulky book always shut itself 😂

This is one of my favorite historical mystery series. I love the setting of Tudor England and the character of Matthew Shardlake. I loved the first and last parts of this book the best but he middle felt a little flat to me. I loved Ellen's story but the rest I was not that interested in. I will, however, continue the series because I have really enjoyed the rest of the books and totally look forward to the next one.

#heartstone #cjsansom

kristincatastrophic I loved that series. I read them years ago but can barely remember the stories. I may need a reread! 6y

I felt slightly disappointed with this book. It had a good beginning (Part 1) & a good ending (Part 6), but a lot of the material in between felt too long winded and not on point enough. Like the others, one cannot argue that they are well written, but think overall this would be my least favourite in the series so far. It rather felt a bit too contrived to bring in the Mary Rose and threatened invasion from the French. Hope the next one improves.

Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, I think we all felt the same. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Hopefully the books won‘t continue to be like that! 6y

It‘s finally here! The buddy read starts on Monday @EadieB @Andrew65 The book is in six parts, so we‘ll be reading it over six days.

EadieB @Tove_Reads Nice book! Can‘t wait to read it! 6y
MayJasper I loved it❗ 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads Even with going straight from work only got to the library at 6.50 tonight, 10 minutes before closing. Did however manage to pick up the book. It‘s big! 6y

Andrew65 @MayJasper Great to hear. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thank goodness they didn‘t give it to someone else like that other book you were suppose to get! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Oh yes! Not the most efficient organisation! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I guess it‘s first come first serve even if you have reserved it! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I hate how they can organise the books in different sub sections which varies in each library and means can often struggle to find a book that is available! I just what one set of shelf‘s will all books from A to Z! Much quicker then to find a book. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 What happened to the Dewey Decimal system? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s there for non fiction but was talking about fiction books. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 They should use it for all the books. Some libraries have mysteries filed under regular fiction. I guess if you don‘t know the author then it goes in fiction. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Sometimes at least 4 or 5 different fiction sections I need to check. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb In the NYTimes article about our new library they were complaining about the cuts in funding in the US and the UK. I think they even said that some claim there is no such thing as a national library system in the UK anymore. Then we build a 98 million euro library. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Library cuts and closures have been savage in some areas. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 They should say libraries will get tons of money because of Brexit, so that positive things would happen. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Done for the day 🙂 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Done! I haven‘t even started yet. 😂 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @andrew65 Finished just now! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Not even half way through the section and with other commitments tonight I am not likely to finish the section so will need to play catch up. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @EadieB Well, it‘s just about started anyway, although interesting plots and I am eager to find out what and whom is behind “making a young girl appear insane”. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads when you finish first section, then we can discos it. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Once I finish the final section of End Game tonight should then be able to catch up but only on chapter 4 at the moment. 6y
EadieB @andrew65 no hurry! We‘ll be here when you are ready. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks 😊👍 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 How‘s your reading going? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Just got home and now finished the first section. Should now be able to accelerate my reading now finished another group read, and hope to finish part two tonight to get back on the plan! 👍😊 An interesting couple of story lines developing, not to mention the upcoming war! @EadieB 6y
Andrew65 Quick progress now - have finished part two! @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That was fast! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Felt I needed to catch up and it was only a short section! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m just starting the 3rd section 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Me too now. It‘s quite a slow paced book, not a lot of action yet. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I was thinking the same thing. I hope it picks up. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB As usual very well written, but yes would like a bit more pace and action. @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 I found the first part to be good since the main plots are interesting. The second part seemed like a bridge between the real things. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I agree sort of like setting things up for the things to come! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes first part was really good for setting everything up, but didn‘t feel part two kept this up. Felt like treading water! @Tove_Reads 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I felt like I wanted to skim through part two 🤷🏼‍♀️☹️ 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes! Although I never do skim but felt like shouting just get a move on. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I don‘t skim either, but I felt like doing it, which is weird since the author is a level A author. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Still going forward like a turtle. The last sentence made it a bit more interesting. The whole hunting thing was a waste of time. At least we found out a bit more about Ellen. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @andrew65 This book isn‘t as interesting as the others! Hopefully it will pick up! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘ve now finished part IV. I agree Eadie, not as strong as the others but am enjoying the Ellen storyline. 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Agree about the last sentence! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes the Ellen part is the best. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 The last part saved the book. Made me feel like I was reading the Kingsbridge series. I wish the whole book had been like that. Richard Rich - what a dbag. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Finally at the end It got good again! I guess the rest was filler about the war and all. @Andrew65 (edited) 6y
Andrew65 I felt this one was a bit of a let down compared to others, felt a bit contrived to get the history in. Too long winded and as said too much filler. Better at the end but not enough to save the book fully in my opinion. Very sad at the end. 6y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Wonder if there was pressure (thanks again, Queen...) to get a new one out? With a bit more thought into it it could have been a great book (if the rest of the book had been like part 1 and part 6). Let me know when you are ready for Lamentation! (edited) 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 We can aim for middle or end of January for next book 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Part 1 And Part 6 were the excellent parts. What about if we went for Monday 14th January? @EadieB 6y
EadieB @andrew65 Sounds good to me. @Tove_Reads 6y
