Finally finished this one. The cognitive dissonance of the afterword about the election win and transition period is huge, since no mention of the Russian hacking of the election is made in the book. So, this is a book that cries out for updating. That said, knowing what we know now allows for greater understanding of the campaign and its aftermath... worth the time to read it.

I'm on the chapter about the primaries. I can only listen to a few minutes at a time. "Once again the rules didn't seem to apply to Trump." This confounded me for a long time; now we know it's due to Russian interference... it's instructive to remember that when reading election coverage with the benefit of hindsight. Sigh.

Ellsbeth I am really curious about his education. I tried looking it up, and found contradictory and muddy sources. Examples: He was top of his class at the Wharton School of Business, he attended the Wharton School of Business but wasn't first in his class, he merely took a few classes at Wharton, and he didn't really attend Wharton. It's so odd to see this kind of contradictory information. 7y

Trump transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after 2 years at Fordham and graduated from its Wharton School but was not in any published honor roll, and other students who can recall him there say he didn't stand out academically. Credible and comprehensive, still it only offers moderate insights into a man who has lived his life in the public eye for the past 40 years. The final portion is a recitation of the 2016 campaign, which if you care enough about to read this book you should already know all about, having just lived through it. So it didn't change my life or anything.

We need to stand strong, face the facts, and resist (sometimes actively, sometimes passively, sometimes vocally, sometimes under the radar, but always with the lessons of history firmly in mind.) 7y

I truly believe we are at a pivotal point in US history where we decide as a nation what we will allow and what we stand against. I'm terrified, and I'm not sitting this one out. Suet624 My one and only consolation is that only 25% of the U.S. voted for him. The downside is that almost 50% of those eligible to vote did not. You are brave to tackle this book. Braver still, check out Fox News sometime. Truly frightening and yet I feel I have to see what they're saying. Then I smudge the house and myself to remove the hatred and fear they project. We have never experienced the likes of this. 7y

That's a liberal arts school - we don't want them teaching her how to be a liberal..." so I tried as best as I could to explain that isn't what liberal arts means. I don't think I or my neighbors are oblivious and stupid due to having different desires for the future. It just makes me sad that my bedrock values -- respectful disagreement, respect for facts and evidence, embracing of difference, thoughtful reflection, and the desire to learn and grow-- were woefully absent from the campaign, and voters didn't care about fake news, insults, outright lies. There is much work to be done, my friends, to rebuild the center borderlands of ideology away from the dangerous extremes. 7y
