Z - A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald
Z - A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald | Therese Anne Fowler
'If ever a couple ... became an era, it was F Scott Fitzgerald and his glamorous "flapper" wife, Zelda. They were the Jazz Age.' - The Independent 'I wish I could tell everyone who thinks we're ruined... Look closer, and you'll see something extraordinary, mystifying, something real and true. We have never been what we seemed.' When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen and he is a young army lieutenant. Before long, Zelda has fallen for him, even though Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. When he sells his first novel, she optimistically boards a train to New York, to marry him and take the rest as it comes. What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined success and celebrity that will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Each place they go becomes a playground: New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French riviera - where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein. Everything seems new and possible, but not even Jay Gatsby's parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous - sometimes infamous - husband? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda's irresistible story as she herself might have told it.

I didn‘t know anything about the Fitzgerald‘s before reading this book. I only decided to read it because of the amazing reviews I‘ve read and seen. I‘ve always meant to read The Great Gatsby and now I will. I might even try and track down her book. I really enjoyed this novel. It‘s was dark and moody, but you still love the Fitzgerald‘s. It makes me wonder about Hemingway as well?? Another rabbit hole to go down as well. It was a good read.

I loved this audio! Zelda is such a fascinating individual. As always, I‘m conflicted over fictionalizations because it‘s hard to know what‘s true and what‘s imagined. I definitely want to read a biography about the Fitzgerald‘s ~ any suggestions?!?!?

jenniferw88 Not a biography but this is a fictional autobiography: "The early 1930s, when Fitzgerald conceived the book, were the darkest years of his life, and the novel's bleakness reflects his own experiences. The novel almost mirrors the events of Fitzgerald and Zelda's lives, as characters are pulled out of and put back into mental care, and the male figure, Dick Diver, starts his descent into alcoholism". 3y
jenniferw88 I have this on the tbr - tender is the night's title came from keats' ode to a nightingale 3y

Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendations @jenniferw88 @Bookwormjillk !!!! They all sound wonderful 🤓I never read TITN but even in this book Zelda fumes that Scott has included her actual letters she‘s written to him as content in the novel. They really are tragic figures, especially Zelda. Excited to read more 😀 3y

My cat was demanding attention & in the way, so I used him in this pic. I‘ve had this book for several years & had forgotten that it isn‘t a bio of Zelda, so it‘s prob not an accurate account. I think it‘s too long, & it really focuses on the early part of her marriage—during the ‘20s. Her last 10 years with Scott (the hospitals/breakdowns) only takes up a small portion. I found it ironic that Fowler writes a lot about Z‘s desire for an identity👇

Scochrane26 outside of Scott, but then she ends the book when Scott dies & only writes a 2 page afterword about Zelda‘s last 8 years. I did enjoy this book, but I think I would like to read a bio at some point. #catsoflitsy (edited) 3y

This is a reread for #LitsyAtoZ

After reading so much of these people in between my first read of this book and now my second, (and I realize it's a fictionalized account) my opinion is that it is very loosely based on their real lives. Still though a lovely read.

If you‘re Team Zelda, you‘ll love this one. If you‘re Team Scott...well, you‘ll have some misgivings. I only knew of the Fitzgeralds‘ volatile relationship through bits and pieces of other things I read. In Fowler‘s debut novel, she constructs a story of two broken people who find each other and hinder/help each other. Told from Zelda‘s perspective, it‘s haunting and sad, with a touch of nostalgia. My Z for #LitsyAtoZ & book 2 for #14books14weeks
