This one one just so-so for me. I did like Molly and felt really sad about people were taking advantage of her. But the story moved slow for me and I didn't like some of the development at the end. I thought this was going to be about a maid who solves a mystery, but it felt more like events were just happening around and to her.
This was my January #DoubleSpin.

Ahh I LOVED THIS BOOK! Holy crap this book was so good! I fell in love with the main character right away. I always say, when a book makes you so angry at fictional characters, you know it's a good book and written well! And that ending.. omigosh. I would recommend this book again and again and again. 5/5 stars!

Molly, who seems to be on the spectrum, is a maid in a posh hotel who finds the body of one of their wealthy guests. The story unfolds in an entertaining fashion and Molly is a great character. My only quibble is a reveal in the epilogue which seems not in keeping with Molly‘s personality, but I enjoyed this enough that I‘m willing to overlook it.

Book 2 this year - take that, months-long reading slump. This was pretty good. Not as twisty as I expected, but I enjoyed Molly‘s perspective as the narrator. Kind of wish I didn‘t buy the book, but definitely worth the read.

This book was almost a pick, but there were a few weird parts near the end (specifically around the death of her Gran) that I just wasn't a fan of. Despite that, the main character was unique and interesting.

I found Molly to be charming, quirky, and clearly misunderstood. It's a unique experience to see the crime and subsequent investigation unfold through her eyes. Cleverly written in the sense that a lot of the suspicions you have are gleaned from the way Molly often misinterprets interactions with people, many who don't have her best interests in mind. The type of mystery that's more about the characters than the whodunnit. #BOTM ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I fell in love with this delightful story! It was such a compulsive listen with memorable characters that the audiobook narrator brought to life. Molly is a character you want to root for and protect; she also challenges you to think about assumptions and differences. I‘m still processing how I feel about the epilogue. 🎧

Got to the halfway point and then gave up.

Reasons in comments under spoiler tags.

julesG It's implied that Molly is neurodiverse/autistic. She was raised by her grandmother who taught her a fixed set of rules. Why then would Molly suddenly overthrow these rules and behave out of character? 2w
julesG Molly kept information to herself. Purely because she could. She wasn't protecting anyone but the murderer. Who that was, was pretty obvious to me - and yes, I had a look at the end of the book to confirm my suspicions. 2w
julesG The police was too dumb. They didn't even check the security tapes to find out who entered the suite? 2w
squirrelbrain I‘ve seen quite a few poor reviews of this one, don‘t think I‘ll be reading it! 2w

Love! Molly Gray is used to being misunderstood. The only person who helped her understand this crazy, verbally-confusing world was her dear grandma, who died some months ago. Molly absorbs herself in her work as a hotel maid until one day a maid nightmare comes true - finding a dead body. Suddenly Molly is thrust into an investigation- one that‘s firmly pointing the finger of guilt at her as the #1 suspect. Full review ScrappyMags.com

This is a fast read, but I‘m no more a fan of using neuro-divergence as a gimmick in a narrator than I was a fan of using alcohol 5 years ago. From what I found online, this isn‘t “own voices” either. I have the feeling this will be an #UnpopularOpinion, but I‘m glad this was a library book. The #audiobook narration is great, FWIW.

SilversReviews LOVED this book. 3w
PatriciaU I didn‘t see the neuro divergence as a gimmick but as an integral part of the story…until the end, which I found incongruous. 3w
Megabooks @Laughterhp as best I can tell, it‘s not. I read the author‘s website and several reviews from major outlets, and it was never flagged own voices, nor did the author indicate it on her website. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen 👍🏻👍🏻 glad I could help. 3w
Megabooks @SilversReviews I‘m glad. It just wasn‘t for me. 3w
SilversReviews @Megabooks A few friends said the same thing. 3w
SilversReviews @Megabooks What are own voices and neuro divergences please? (edited) 3w
Megabooks @PatriciaU agree re: the end. I think the author felt it should have a twist, so she threw one in. Molly felt a bit wooden as a character. I read the book I‘m tagging, and its MC had some form of neurodivergence and/or trauma, and she felt much more three-dimensional to me. I guess I couldn‘t help but compare the books. But I also hope it won‘t become a frequent plot device the way alcohol was 5 years ago. (edited) 3w
Megabooks @SilversReviews “own voices” would mean that it was written by a neurodivergent author. I‘m in favor of reading own voices books when possible because they feel more authentic, and it helps diversify the authors that get books published. 3w
SilversReviews @Megabooks Thanks….I never heard of this. Appreciate the link. 3w
Ruthiella When you mention alcohol 5 years ago, do you mean like The Girl on the Train where her black outs etc. were used to further the plot? 🤔 3w
Megabooks @Ruthiella Yes that drove me nuts and also the ubiquity of alcohol-fueled MCs in mystery/thriller from 2016-2018. In this book, Molly read as wooden and I feel that her neurodivergence, rather that making her more real, was used to make her quirky and off-beat. In fact, quirky is used in a number of reviews and blurbs. It just felt more gimmick than authentic to me. 3w
Ruthiella @Megabooks Gotcha. Thanks 🙏😊 3w
BarbaraBB Another excellent review. You could do this professionally, you know that?! 3w
Cinfhen Will definitely look to #BorrowNotBuy 😁at least it fulfilled 2 prompts 🙌🏻 3w
mdemanatee So good to know. Thank you! 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! Sometimes I think I‘d enjoy doing that. 😁💜 3w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m curious to read what others think. It will probably be a popular book on litsy. But it‘s definitely borrow not buy imo. I just don‘t want neurodivergence to become a cheap way to make a character “quirky”. 3w
Megabooks @mdemanatee you‘re welcome! 3w
4thhouseontheleft I noticed the quirky descriptions in reviews on GR when I was looking at this book, and both that and the book blurb felt wrong to me. I probably won‘t be reading this one. Great review! 3w
Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft thanks! I don‘t think the characterization of Molly was done well at all. 3w

Molly is a young, socially awkward maid at a fancy hotel. When she discovers the dead body of a guest she becomes embroiled in a mystery, with her as a suspect. This is a fun, entertaining read with great characters and a somewhat lighter tone. It took me a little while to get used to Molly's style of telling her story, but I ended up really enjoying it and hope to see more of her in future books. I gave it 4.25/5 stars!

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for an ARC. This is a well-written, old school murder mystery with a neurodivergent protagonist. This one pulled me in two different directions. It‘s a mystery, but it‘s also a social commentary about how many treat those who they consider “different” or “outside the norm”. Molly is a hotel maid at a glitzy hotel and LOVES her job. Her beloved Gran has recently died and left her alone in a world she sometimes has difficulty interpreting (she would be diagnosed as on the spectrum, along the lines of Asperger‘s syndrome). Most of her 🔻

robinb coworkers ignore her or treat her as if she‘s an idiot. While at work one day, she discovers the body of a VIP guest in one of her rooms. Thus begins a plot in which she is setup as the patsy by some of those she trusted. There are some twists. And while she does get her day/justice by the end and begins to learn how to discern true friendship rather than subterfuge, 🔻 2mo
robinb I felt sad and mentally and emotionally exhausted through much of the book at the awful way she is treated. She is a character that I won‘t soon forget. And her Gran (even though she was deceased) shone as a beacon in Molly‘s flashbacks…such a special relationship the two shared. I‘m exhausted but did enjoy it. 4.25/5⭐️ 2mo

I haven't fallen in love with a character from a book in a long while, but I have now. Miss Molly Gray is such a delight. I gave the book 4 1/2 ⭐ for the simple reason, at the end, Prose added a few pages, I wish she hadn't. The book, to me, would have been a 5⭐. Pick up this book January 4, 2022.

I enjoyed working out the mystery in this, although I was far more invested in Molly‘s outcome than anything else. I wanted only the best for her. I was in love with the way things were concluding and had it ended a few pages sooner, this would have been a five star read for me. However, those last few pages made me feel as if I‘d been betrayed by a friend.

She is an endearing character obsessed with cleanliness, a rule follower, one who follows etiquette, but very naive.

Her naive personality had her framed for a murder of a guest, though.
