The Book of Speculation
The Book of Speculation | Erika Swyler
Simon Watson lives alone on the Long Island Sound. His parents are long dead, his mother having drowned in the water his house overlooks. On a day in late June, Simon receives a mysterious book from an antiquarian bookseller; it has been sent to him because it is inscribed with the name of Simon's grandmother. The book tells the story of two doomed lovers who were part of a travelling circus more than two hundred years ago. He is fascinated, yet as he reads Simon becomes increasingly unnerved. Why do so many women in his family drown on 24th July? And could his beloved sister, who has suddenly turned up at home for the first time in years, risk the same terrible fate?As 24th July draws ever closer, Simon must unlock the mysteries of the book, and decode his family history, before it's too late.

Loved this family story, that has a touch of magic and a whole lot of melancholy. Mysterious old books, a crumbling home, complicated families, carnival folk, the ocean.... what‘s not to like!?
This story was written so beautifully. And I was drawn as equally to Simon the librarian's present day tale as he searches to uncover his family secrets, as I was to his ancestor's story of 1700's carnival life. Really lovely. 💕

ValerieAndBooks This is in my TBR! I was actually gazing over to it the other day wondering if I should move it up from the pile it was in 😂! 3w

Perfect read for this time of year! It was beachy but also slightly creepy. It felt like a day at the beach that ends with a storm building up. It did lag toward the middle but the writing was so beautiful that it wasn‘t unpleasant. It was predictable in the ending. The curse didn‘t feel completely formed and planned out either. But all-in-all it was a fun time.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So this month my reading challenge required me to pick a book based on the cover. This is the book I chose. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I‘ve not heard much about it. I‘m only on the second chapter but I am enjoying it so far.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I have this book with a completely different cover! Read it a couple of years back and completely loved it! Gorgeous writing style. If you enjoy it - I recommend reading the novella about Simon‘s parents. 2mo
KathyWheeler @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I didn‘t know there was a novella about Simon‘s parents. Off to look for it now. 2mo

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The circus history sparked my interest and I'm on the hunt for more. I would have liked more character development in the present time portion of the story. But all in all I liked it.

This debut novel had all the right ingredients to be fantastic, a librarian, a resurfacing of a very old book that holds some family secrets, mermaids and travelling side shows... But, you needed too many leaps of faith, suspend just too much disbelief & turn a blind eye to one too many coincidences! That said, I though the writing was good, and the evocation of time and place really visual and I'll be looking out for Swyler's next one!

It was just ok for me, I would say about 3.5 stars. I wanted to love it because it‘s set on Long Island and it‘s about carnival workers but nothing about it really grabbed me, I found myself forgetting details about the story so things probably weren‘t connecting like they should have for me. Oh, and this was my dog all dressed pretty for Thanksgiving!

The #bookclub meeting was Monday. We all agreed that we liked the ideas in this one but wish they had been executed a bit differently. One problem we had: we wanted to know more about the main character‘s (Simon‘s) family history. I don‘t want to get too far into that thought because it may be spoiler territory. Mermaids 🧜‍♀️ circus 🎪 old books 📖 family history and more. I just didn‘t connect with this as much as I thought I would.

#ReadingResolutions - Cover Love: This type of photo will always speak to me. Favorite color, green, represented. Favorite object, books, represented. The word ‘book‘ in the title, represented. That rubbery feeling jacket cover, represented. Kind of a weird dress, but that‘s okay. Yeah, I bought it for the look that caused the vibe. Now I‘ve been informed that the jacket cover doesn‘t, in any way, represent the story.😳👇🏽

Feral boy falls in love with a #mermaid. Need no more this book was for me

I'm intrigued by the human curiosities of the world: watching Ripley's Believe It or Not, scouring over new editions of the Guiness Book of World Records, joining the fandom of P.T. Barnum and The Greatest Showman and on and on...

An impressive debut with a mystery due to reoccur in a few weeks time if the librarian can't figure out the history of his family.

This book has carnivals, mermaids, plagues of horseshoe crabs and tarot cards. (I think the book cover missed a lot of opportunities 😉) the audiobook is narrated by Ari Fliakos, who is AMAZEBALLS. Very entertaining story. The mystery does drop a few too many clues and the characters sometimes take a little too long to figure things out, but an overall pick. #audiobook
