Following the events of the bestselling graphic novel, Sheets, Delicates brings Brenna Thummlers beloved characters, artwork, and charm back to life. Marjorie Glatts life hasnt been the same ever since she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her familys laundromat. Wendell, who died young and now must wander Earth as a ghost with nothing more than a sheet for a body, soon became one of Marjories only friends. But when Marjorie finally gets accepted by the popular kids at school, she begins to worry that if anyone learns about her secret ghost friends, shell be labeled as a freak who sees dead people. With Marjories insistence on keeping Wendells ghost identity a secret from her new friends, Wendell begins to feel even more invisible than he already is. Eliza Duncan feels invisible too. Shes an avid photographer, and her zealous interest in finding and photographing ghosts gets her labeled as different by all the other kids in school. Constantly feeling on the outside, Eliza begins to feel like a ghost herself. Marjorie must soon come to terms with the price she pays to be accepted by the popular kids. Is it worth losing her friend, Wendell? Is she partially to blame for the bullying Eliza endures? Delicates tells a powerful story about what it means to fit in, and those left on the outside. It shows what its like to feel invisible, and the importance of feeling seen. Above all, it is a story of asking for help when all seems dark, and bringing help and light to those who need it most.

This one was far more emotional than the first book, in my opinion. I think I enjoyed the story more, too. It was completely different from the first book, which I'm grateful for. The author could have done more of the same, but this felt more real and meaningful than that one did. I still don't care for the art style, but I wasn't as bothered as I was before. I must be getting used to it.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel about an 8th grader and her ghostly friends trying to navigate a tough age. After I finished I immediately passed it on to my middle schooler.

This was actually better than Sheets. It goes a bit deeper into the newly introduced character Eliza, who doesn‘t fit in and is having suicidal thoughts after being bullied by classmates. I felt more invested in this than Sheets, though some jumps in time or place were still a bit jarring. #bookspinbingo #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Sheets sequel, borrowed from # hoopla. On my hook : Nessie shawl in a mix of BWM and Malabrigo wools. My colourway goal was to evoke Kambarang wildflowers on Noongar country. #litsycrafters

This wasn‘t one of my favorite graphic novels but I respect Thummler‘s focus on some controversial topics. I didn‘t feel like the main character acted consistently and I also felt like there were a lot of unresolved plot threads when the story ended.

I returned it to the library, so please enjoy this picture of Fitz instead!

This was a really good book. It had some very big topics of depression, not fitting in, suicidal ideations, bullying. I feel like they handled everything so beautifully!

I am loving it so far! Its got a bunch of really important topics. I remember how horrible being a pre-teen was!

#JustAnotherGraphicMonday
@Bookworm54 @AkashaVampie @AsYouWish @jb72 @AnansiGirl

jb72 It was horrible. Preteen and teen were both just awful. 2y
ElizaMarie @jb72 Ha yes! It was. I was “popular“ as a teen, but I remember all the fakeness of it all. I was in this group and didn't really have “real:“ friends it was a very conditional type of friendship. 2y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I was not popular at all. Most kids didn‘t even talk to me because at one point I had a boyfriend who was….known for for fighting. He was scary to them. 2y
ElizaMarie @jb72 ooo scary boyfriend/body guard is a definite push people away 2y

Gosh, this book...had all the feels! Touches on the very important topics of teen bullying and contemplative suicide. It was just as great as the first one!

I didn‘t read the first graphic novel volume ‘Sheets,‘ about a middle school girl & her ghost friends, but I sure enjoyed this second volume. The topic of being bullied for being different versus being your own weird self is delicately handled, and a neurodiverse character is well portrayed. True friendship is precious. Expressive, colourful art. #kidlit #comics

saresmoore Both of my daughters really enjoyed Sheets and we just found Delicates at the library. I‘m glad to hear it‘s a good one! 3y

Ha! Can you see why I think that cartoonist Brenna Thummler must be a fan of To Kill a Mockingbird?

I think I like this one even more than the first one. It takes on the subject of bullying and how tough it is to be the "weirdo". It has important messages but doesn't feel as heavy with all the beautiful illustrations.

Cute middle grade graphic novel that hits on some difficult topics. Neurodiverse rep & attention to bullying, peer pressure, & social stigma. The artwork is unique with the inclusion of a lot of jewel tone coloration that makes it feel comfortable & inviting. The ending was really well handled & I hope it indicates that there will be more in this series. There could be some wonderful investigation into difficult topics for young readers.

Middle school is a complex time of social and emotional development. This book examines friendship, grief, bullying, suicide ideation, and other tough topics. I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting, the art style is engaging, and the story is satisfying. I also liked the glimpses we get into living with a grieving parent who doesn't know how to let their kids help. #GraphicNovel #MentalHealth #Ghosts #Bullying

I have several stacks of these photo envelopes from my husband's family, and remember really loving going through these at my own house as a kid. Do printed photos still come in envelopes like this? I never print my photos.

wanderinglynn Yes they do. I had some photos printed at Costco in 2018 and they still came in an envelope like that. You just don‘t get the negatives anymore since it‘s all digital. 3y
Kenyazero @wanderinglynn Good to know! The negatives always became drawer confetti anyway 😏 3y

The face this devorced dad makes when he thinks his daughter is talking about puberty is too funny. Absolutely helpless. (She's talking about developing photos in a dark room).

So far, I'm loving this sequel to Sheets. I'm enjoying the themes, and the art style has really grown on me.

Loved Sheets when it first came out and equally adore this follow up called Delicates.

There is a lot to unpack in this story. Middle school is a delicate time of emotional growth and Brenna Thumper cradles it carefully to bring depth to these characters' feelings.

Check the content warnings if you have sensitivities.

The art is beautiful and so is the story. 5/5 stars

Read this graphic novel this morning because I was lucky enough to be granted a review copy from NetGalley. It came out in printed form March 16th. I love the colors. This is Sheets #2. Marjorie is going into 8th grade and has become part of one of those “popular” groups - not that she goes along with some of their ideas. After all, some of her friends are ghosts! #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #9 #DS (and bingo!) #SERIES2021 #MGMarch

Thanks to Netgalley I was able to read this one, and just wow. I‘m an emotional wreck. This was harder than Sheets was and man, Sheets killed me.
Marjorie is back with her laundromat ghosts, particularly Wendell, and a new acquaintance, Eliza. Eliza is a photographer who wants to capture a ghost on film and is bullied at school. Marj and Eliza‘s lives crash into each other and they just might save one another with the help of Wendell.
