Malibu Rising
Malibu Rising | Taylor Jenkins Reid
From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six. A lifetime holding it together. One party will set it on fire. Malibu: August, 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over-especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva. The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud-because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth. Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there. And Kit has a couple secrets of her own-including a guest she invited without consulting anyone. By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come bubbling to the surface. Malibu Burning is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

Day 5 @AdventRecommends March Book 1

I love Taylor Jenkins Read‘s books. Whilst it may not be my favourite of her books it still was a very enjoyable read but she has set such a high standard in the past. This has a rating of 4.08 on Goodreads and I definitely recommend it to others. I gave it 4 1/2 stars. She is always a must read for me and has some original plots.

This book has so many characters and mini stories connected to those characters it was hard to keep up. The book was just ok for me.

Quite literally a book of 2 halves. The first half is there to set the scene & give some back story. Although it does do this, I actually almost gave up on this book before I got to part 2, part 1 went on for too long. The second part I was hooked and couldn‘t put it down. It was fairly fast passed and I really enjoyed it. However the blurb mentions a fire which was far less important that I thought & I was waiting for it‘s significance

What an interesting book! The character development was everything I wanted it to be. I appreciated the way the children attempted to break their systemic patterns in their family to create a new life. I enjoyed how each character was different but also devoted to their family. I was slightly perturbed by the way things unfolded, but it was interesting enough to keep me interested. I would love to see this adapted into a TV series

I choose Malibu Rising because of the relationships between the siblings. It reminded me of the depth of friendship in Of Mice and Men.

I heard this wasn‘t as good as Daisy Jones and the Six, but I actually loved it more. The bond and love these siblings have for each other is so touching. The drama of celebrity and little side stories gave it a perfect pacing. I tore through this.

I loved this! Mick and June's love story was romantic then heartbreaking. The 4 Riva siblings were wonderful characters and I loved them all. Siblings who love and support each other feel rare in recent fiction so I appreciated that aspect. The descriptions and sense of place were wonderful. This is the best thing I've read in months. 💛 One caveat. ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ I got tired of hearing the backstories of the party guests. I wanted to focus on Nina, Jay, Hud, and Kit so all of those vignettes began to feel like interruptions. That's my only complaint though. 🤷‍♀️ 3mo

Reid does such a great job writing characters. I absolutely adored the siblings and their strength and struggle. I cried. I laughed. I could not put this down. My only complaint, I did not like the many mini paragraphs on others characters that weren‘t important. I rather the focus be on the siblings.

bookandbedandtea I just read this and my review said basically the same thing! 😆 3mo

My ride from Florida was equal parts driving and reading this. I love Taylor Jenkins Reid; this is the 3rd of hers I read and loved. Her characters and stories are so complex, always rooted somewhat in reality. Her writing style is easy to read and absorbs you. She intertwined both Daisy Jones and Evelyn Hugo into this book. Filled with trials, tribulations, family, loss, love and so much more, I recommend this book. TJR is a must read author.

TJR never fails to deliver! I loved the dynamics of the Riva siblings; their dedication and love for one another prospered through their hardships which I found heartwarming. I specifically favored the early chapters about Mick and June. Additionally, I really enjoyed TJR set up for this book too, splitting every other chapter between past and present until it aligned with the fire. It was no Evelyn Hugo, but it was definitely worth the read!

Just finished this! It‘s my 2nd Taylor Jenkins Reid book and I much preferred Daisy Jones. This one was highly cliched; none of it surprised me. I also didn‘t love any of the characters. The problems felt too easily resolved. The descriptions of the landscape are great and I can picture it as a movie/show. I felt compelled to keep reading it because of the writing style; otherwise, I would not have kept going. Sadly disappointed by this!

I really like the symbolism and intense family dynamics, but this wasn‘t for me. Got bored of the back and forth. Really liked the ending and overall an interesting story, just a lot of build up and really more of a story about the family, not the fire. It would be a GREAT show though!

This is the story of a Frank Sinatra like singer who abandons his wife and four kids. She‘s apparently too proud to ask for child support and raises them on the brink of poverty. Okay I did have to suspend my disbelief- but it‘s a story about a Malibu family and one particular party. It‘s probably not for everyone but I couldn‘t put it down.

Christyco125 I also couldn‘t stop reading this. The sibling relationships were just so fascinating. 6mo

I think I've officially decided that Taylor Jenkins Reid just isn't for me. I appreciated Evelyn Hugo for the bi rep but otherwise was bored and this one was no different 😔

I loved the first half and felt like the story was set up for what should have been a showstopper of a conclusion, but this ultimately was also pretty forgettable for me! #botm

While I didn‘t find this as great as Daisy Jones, I still liked it. Found it to be a solid story about Mick and his family. But definitely not one I feel the need keep on the shelf and re-read.

Though, I did love how when the party was taking place at Nina‘s, I could feel my anxiety rise, the overwhelm, as more and more characters were introduced by “arriving at the party.” I think it drove home how Nina was feeling at that exact same time.

Definitely one of TJR best books in my opinion, I enjoyed the distinct characters & their journey to self realisation. A book that is ser in the 80s is what I needed, such an interesting way to see a book that is not just set today. I loved June and Mics chapters, as well as the siblings journey in life.

This is a familiar story—dysfunctional, close-knit, famous family dealing with the weight of responsibility, promises, secrets & lies, broken promises, drama—filled with familiar characters. There is nothing wholly original about it but that is ok because Reid knows how to tell a good story. This is a fast, light read perfect for the beach or a lazy afternoon. Entertaining enough.

TJR is becoming one of my favorite fiction authors. It was a decent story (aside from introducing way too many characters for a small part of the story, personally I hate having to keep up with 20 different characters). I enjoyed the story of the Riva siblings & their lives. It was a good, quick, mindless read. Although Evelyn Hugo is still my favorite TJR book to date. It was the perfect start to summer book. #bookspin

Just what I needed; a gossipy page turner/family saga, which in parts was unexpectedly sad. The writing was a bit melodramatic at times , and for me it didn‘t live up to Daisy Jones & The Six which I loved, but I‘m being picky, this is a great holiday read.
