Elikem married me in absentia; he did not come to our wedding. Afi Tekple is a young seamstress whose life is narrowing rapidly. She lives in a small town in Ghana with her widowed mother, spending much of her time in her uncle Piouss house with his many wives and children. Then one day she is offered a life-changing opportunitya proposal of marriage from the wealthy family of Elikem Ganyo, a man she doesnt truly know. She acquiesces, but soon realizes that Elikem is not quite the catch he seemed. He sends a stand-in to his own wedding, and only weeks after Afi is married and installed in a plush apartment in the capital city of Accra does she meet her new husband. It turns out that he is in love with another woman, whom his family disapproves of; Afi is supposed to win him back on their behalf. But it is Accra that eventually wins Afis heart and gives her a life of independence that she never could have imagined for herself. A brilliant scholar and a fierce advocate for womens rights, author Peace Adzo Medie infuses her debut novel with intelligence and humor. For readers of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Candice Carty-Williams, His Only Wife is the story of an indomitable and relatable heroine that illuminates what it means to be a woman in a rapidly changing world.

This book read like a psychological thriller. I felt for Afi so much she deserved so much better. The ending was sad but raw and realistic- Eli deserved everything was coming to him.

She sighed with her whole torso and then locked eyes with me. "Afi, don't forget who you are. You are not an actress and this is not a romance film. This is not one of those telenovelas you and Mawusi have been watching. This is real life. This is our life. You will get to know him and like him. That is how it is.

And now, how could he not be at our wedding? I knew that men were sometimes unable to attend, but it was usually because of issues beyond their control: expired visas and resident permits, insufficient funds to afford plane tickets for themselves and their new brides, poor health. But I had never heard of a man missing his wedding because of a business trip.

What kind of business keeps a man away from his own wedding?

DivineDiana 😲 I have no idea? 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I think it is a cultural thing. The idea of taking work off would never occur in some cultures, if there is a business trip planned? Well work always comes first because the son has so much financial responsibility not only for themselves but their family. If I remember correctly he didn't choose the wife? Family did, so she is not a romantic connection. 2mo

This book showed a completely other side of Africa. The side of the wealthy in modern day #Ghana. Arranged marriages are still possible though. Afi is supposed to be lucky to marry Eli, a rich and kind man. Their love story is quite unrealistic and not very well worked out but it was easy and fun to read. A light pick.

so THIS was a PLEASANT surprise!! I liked it, big-big😁Afi finds herself in an arranged marriage to a wealthy, handsome , kindhearted man, the only problem- there‘s already another woman in his life. I really enjoyed Afi‘s personal journey and the portrait of modern day #Ghana. There‘s a unique perspective in this story, one that flips the story into something memorable. #ReadingAfrica22 #DoubleSpin

Just starting my #DoubleSpin #ReadingAfrica22 book 🎧So far I‘m enjoying the descriptions and daily life of #Ghana 🇬🇭 and the story is interesting, my only criticism is that the narrator does not have an African dialect (which I 💛)

Librarybelle Oh! I hadn‘t realized this was set in Ghana! That‘s good to know 7mo

Librarybelle Thank you! I‘m about the same, but all tests are coming back normal. There is one anomaly that should not be causing my situation, which really confuses my PCP, so she wants me to try a slight change in diet. I‘m just glad to know that everything looks good! Thank you for asking, and I‘ve been thinking of you and your family. 💜 7mo
nichollinlove I love this one. It made me see my own unconscious misogyny. I was annoyed with Afi and had to have a reality check with myself about why. I really enjoy the perspective this book gave me. 7mo
Cinfhen Exactly @nichollinlove I‘ve seen people criticize Afi but I‘m all for her finding her voice and standing up for herself. I‘m also loving this snapshot of Ghana. It‘s a different perspective. 7mo

⭐️⭐️ 💫

An interesting take on the “other woman”. I liked that this was set in Ghana and admired Afi‘s growth, but her character rubbed me the wrong way. She seemed self-centered and illogical. I didn‘t buy how she and Eli fell in love so quickly, and since she went into the marriage knowing there was another woman, I was confused why she thought of her as a home-wrecker. I felt sympathetic towards Muna and would have liked to hear from her POV.

A young Ghanaian woman‘s journey to self love and independence. This read a little like a young adult novel and reminded me of The Girl with the Louding Voice‘. Sort of charmingly child-like and a bit of a fairy tale. I personally prefer more nuanced books, so only a so-so from me.

This book wrapped me up in all the emotions while I was reading it…joy, anger, bewilderment, pride. I couldn‘t get it out of my mind and found myself cheering for the main character, Afi, who finds herself in an arranged marriage with a wealthy man, Elikem, whose family is hoping will dump his girlfriend when he marries Afi. The characters are developed beautifully and the story will definitely get you thinking! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I tell you, the setting of this book in Ghana was giving me LIFE!! The setting + the amazing female MC made this book special. The MC was fun and strong and so relatable. There were several great characters. The storyline was a bit basic yet still enjoyable and I couldn‘t guess some of the character‘s motivations until the end. Me and Reese usually do not have the same taste in books but this one was a gem. ☺️

Set in Ghana within the city of Accra, this #debut explores marriage, family, and finding your voice. Afi marries Eli at the request of both families even though she doesn‘t know him. Believing he will change, she hopes to become his “only” wife. Throughout the experience, she discovers what she will do for love and security. I enjoyed it though occasionally found it hard to understand some cultural differences. Still I highly recommend. 4/5 ⭐️

I loved the premise, and the glorious setting that Medie brought to life. I wish the characters had been drawn with a similar level detail; as it is, I didn‘t feel I really got to know any of them, and the dialogue was a bit too clunky to really reel me in. Still, it‘s a fun take on the Cinderella story, one I look forward to seeing on the screen. Extended review here: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

I was intrigued by the premise and opening line of this book. “Elikem married me in absentia; he did not come to our wedding.” While I didn‘t get a cat fight between wife vs mistress, I did get a good feel for the vastly different lifestyles of the little village of Ho and the bustling capital city of Accra, both in modern day Ghana. (To be fair, the mistress was there first and Eli DIDN‘T attend his wedding to Afi.) Afi is a 21-year old ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick seamstress who has been arranged to marry Eli, the favorite son of her & her mother‘s benefactor, Aunty Ganyo. Eli already has a girlfriend & daughter, but Afi is swayed by the Ganyo family‘s reports of her being ugly, cold, crazy, and not suitable. Afi is young and poor, so she faces a culture shock when she gets to Accra and placed is in a fancy apartment with nothing much to fill her days and an allowance to spend on anything she wants. ⬇️

2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick When WILL Eli come to her?I don‘t agree with some of Afi‘s actions and feelings regarding her marriage and her place in Accra, but those are opinions from a middle-class, North American white lady twenty years her senior. The story kept me reading, wanting to know how it all played out, how Afi‘s life turns out? The book reads a bit like the autobiography of a fictional character, but the depictions of Ghana were my favorite part of this. ⬇️

2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The book coupled with a few quick internet searches make me feel like I have a good idea of the world Afi lives in. The customs and actions of some of the people we meet - Eli with his polygamous relationships, Uncle Pious & his AUDACITY, and even Aunty Ganyo, the fickle mother-in-law with money to throw around. It‘s good to know that even in Ghana, money makes the world go round.

I've been trying to find the words to describe this reading experience. Peace paints this world in a way that makes you feel like you can picture even the tiniest of details. I was given enough info about Afi, her mom, Eli, Auntie Ganyo, uncle Pious, Richard, Evelyn and Yaya to feel like they were all critical to the story. Out of the many subplots in this story, only one felt unresolved and it did honestly leave me a bit confused.

I don't know a lot about polygamy, but I tend to group sister-wives with the feeling of being submissive to the shared husband. This book is very modern and easy to understand such a wide array of emotions. Afi was raised in a home witnessing a marriage of multiple wives and knew it was never something she wanted for herself. A few times I felt Afi was becoming entitled in her new found wealth but each time redeemed herself and how strong she is.

This book has been described as “A Crazy Rich Asians for West Africa, with a healthy splash of feminism”. It‘s the story of an arranged marriage between Afi‘s and Elikem. It should have been a “Cinderella“ story set in Ghana but you knew things were going to get weird from the very first line of the book; “Elikem married me in absentia ...” A fun and clever debut with unforgettable characters.

Afi, a poor girl, marries Eli,a man from one of the most important Ghanaian families. He marries obligated by his mother, who would do anything to separate him from the woman he loves. The breach between rich and poor, family structures, women independence and polygamy are themes present in the story but not very effectively.I was constantly waiting for the drama to unfold and even wondered if it ever would...sad about the book that could have been.
