The mix of a vintage haunted house story with a tech forward smart house was utterly, convincingly, terrifying.

Dominicana: A Novel | Angie Cruz

I picked this as my #botm because I decided I‘m going to read more women of color (sorry old white dudes, but you had your time. Still love you jerks) I wasn‘t sure about this book at first, but fell in love with Ana and her story, there was drama, romance, politics and history all mixed with some delicious sounding Dominican food. By the last chapter, I didn‘t want her story to end.

I had difficulty at the beginning of this book but when it switched points of view I was riveted. Definitely recommend if you like murder mysteries and being on the edge of your reading chair 😉

Three Women | Lisa Taddeo
post image
Pickpick

Phenomenal portrait of three women, their lives, their desires, their thoughts. I wish I could ask the author about the epilogue, though I‘m thinking part of the closing idea was that (especially as fellow women) we need to support each other in our happiness. How does this play out with social media, and the rise of “faux-perfection” I wonder?

There were so many good quotes, I hope I can post some.

“Things are better now, they feel like they‘re getting better-don‘t they? But they‘re might be more coming. This might be the least of it. Have you thought about that? We knew nothing about what it meant to grow up, to be partners, parents, all of it. Nothing. And maybe we still don‘t. Would you have said yes back then if you‘d known?”
...
“Then and now, I say yes.”

Too cute 👗 I loved this book. I usually go for “deeper” (whatever that means) books or classics, but my aunt suggested this and it was so sweet I couldn‘t help but love it ❤️

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
Pickpick

I started this thinking it would be a heartwarming story about overcoming a strange and unique childhood... Partly is was, but mostly it was a gritty, raw account of a remarkable and intelligent young woman surviving what would appear to be unbelievable if it wasn‘t so clearly and articulately documented in her memoir. Her honesty is unflinching and some parts are hard to handle (like the injuries endured in childhood)

The same thing is true of your happiness and your sorrow. Sorrow, fear, and depression are all a kind of garbage. These bits of garbage are part of real life, and we must look deeply into their nature. You can practice in order to turn these bits of garbage into flowers.

Absolutely beautiful writing. I picked it up for content and plot, but would read again for the wonderful way she wields words. Also led me to other literature with her poignant references.

I couldn‘t tell you what this book about, nor could I tell you all the feelings I had about it. All I can say is that I read it fast hoping for something that maybe I got but can‘t appreciate. Something in this book ran true and sad and beautiful, I just don‘t know how to articulate it.
