The Shadows
The Shadows: A Novel | Alex North
The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times bestseller The Whisper Man You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile--always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that its attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet--and inspired more than one copycat. Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree--and his victim--were Pauls friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and senile, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home. It's not long before things start to go wrong. Reading the news, Paul learns another copycat has struck. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago. It wasn't just the murder. It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again...

I‘m always down for some (semi) unreliable narrators. Paul goes back to his hometown to visit his dying mother, a town where he was a part of a horrific murder 25 years before. The murderer disappeared, and now there‘s a copycat. There are some twists I didn‘t see coming, and while the ending wasn‘t super climatic, I enjoyed the book overall. Also, the detective is named Amanda, and she‘s a badass, as all of us Amanda‘s are!

I am gonna DNF this book, I don't understand the premise and I don't feel engaged in the story. Maybe it's the narrator for the audiobook or the format but I am gonna move on no pts for #TeamSlaughter Sorry Y'all. #Scarathlon2021 @Clwojick #BookBingo

kellyann28 I didn't care for The Whisper Man and heard this book was basically the same 😂 I didn't even give it a go 8mo
rsteve388 @kellyann28 that's good to know as well. I've switched over to a cozy mystery and it seems to be hitting the spot. 8mo
Clwojick You still get the points for a DNF. We're not going to force you to finish something you're not interested in. Count the 15pts, and the hours read, if you're doing readathons. 8mo

Bklover Did you like The Whisper Man? I had trouble getting interested in that one. Characters seemed kind of flat if that makes sense. Probably will skip this one! 8mo
rsteve388 @Bklover I haven't read Whisper Man. I started with this one. Maybe I'll try whisper man at a later time. 8mo

Another excellent read by Alex North. Enjoyed how he has a suspenseful plot but also goes deep into the relationships among the characters. Week 4 of summer left me surprised and sad.

I really enjoyed this book overall. Lots of, albeit depressing, twists and turns had me hooked from beginning til end. I‘m not going to give it super high stars because it just made me sad instead of spooked, which was what I was hoping more of this book. 3.5 🌟

So glad I could finally get my hands on this book. I loved the mix of mystery, thriller and almost horror. The urban legend aspect was awesome and really added some creepy vibes to the whole story. Personally I would have loved some more atmospheric horror added in. I‘m definitely going to check out the first book by this author.

I wish I could say that I loved this book! Sadly, though, I can‘t. The pacing was real chill and it lacked the tension that would keep my interest firmly on the story. There were some creepy-ish moments but the potential for a true thrill fizzled out because there was no hook. With each reveal, I felt it lacked the edge that was necessary to engage me. There‘s only so much let down a reader can take before the disappointment sets in.

Read this one for family book club. It was good. I kept thinking there was going to be a huge twist, so I did not get most of who was really guilty until it was laid out in the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 I was struggling a bit for nearly 3/4 of the book. A little confused, waiting for it to all make sense then all of a sudden in Part 3 the other shoe falls and things start to make sense. I probably should have picked up the casually dropped “clues”, but my excuse will be that I don‘t often ready mystery/thriller. Also: read it when you have time to immerse yourself. Short, stuttered reading sessions won‘t do. #litsyatoz #booked2021

After dinner but before bed. I like the peace with my dog, but I can‘t read when it gets too late. Like, right now, my eye lids are already at half mast.

Whoop whoop! I did it! Book#3.

Paul returns home to see his dying mother, the book told interspersed with flashbacks from his teen years and a somewhat unsolved crime. A fun one in which I was reasonably enjoying it and then and one two punch! which I never saw coming. Then another, then another! Phew. It was a pretty good thriller with some good twists. Easy to read and entertaining.

I'm never sure what I can say about mystery-type books that won't give away important stuff, but I think it's safe to say that 1) this wasn't what I was expecting, 2) it reminds me a little of The Broken Girls, and 3) it feels more like it takes place in northeast Ohio than in England (except the police have no guns; one detective puts her keys between her fingers to use as a weapon like I do when I cross a dark parking lot, which is weird to me).
