I was hoping for a little more horror, but there is definitely a gothic feel to the book. Good thriller-mystery!

Honestly not sure what to say about the ending. Who else has read it and what did you think? I was all in until the end.
Just WOW! This book was both parts fascinating and terrifying. It was exactly what was looking for and I definitely need more novels like this. I can see how this book wouldn't be for everyone, but holy cow, everyone should at least give it a try. This bizarre, twisted tale of a dysfunctional family, romance, murder, and ghosts will certainly take you on a different ride than what you were expecting.

This is as just not my cup of tea. If you like horror romance, it‘s probably good. Just not the type of fantasy I enjoy.

I actually quite liked this. At first I thought the MC was going to scrape at my nerves, but honestly I ended up liking her quite a bit. I enjoyed the slight spin on the “damsel in distress” trope. I‘ll admit I started having some suspicions about what was happening towards the beginning, but the unique twists kept me guessing in the end. Much more of a calm “horror” story than I usually go for, more “campfire creepy” than all out horror.
I had wanted to read this for ages, finally got the book and glad to have read it. It's was certainly not what I was expecting but definitely very entertaining. I do want to try her other books now.
Boring.
Wow, what a great book. I would love to see this turn into a miniseries on Netflix. My favorite part was how graphic it was. I was thoroughly creeped out!
This book kept my attention. I found myself thinking about and counting down when I could pick it up again. I was truly sad when it was finished!
Hopefully I can crack this at work today but not holding out much hope.
Picked this up this morning instead of my scheduled May TBR books. Can‘t put it down. Already SO GOOD. Thanks needed a slower morning today to try and reset/heal. Falling head first into another time/place/family is wonderful.
This book definitely lived up to its name. Like others have said, I saw what was coming a mile away. I like Noemi and would love to know what happens after the end. All in all, a dark read with a good take on an old plot.
Thank you @peanutnine for this awesome #speculativespringswap #sss package! I‘ve heard so many good things about this book and look forward to sampling the teas! And the book weight! How do I not already have one of these?! Should make my life easier for reading while eating/petting my cat/during my semi-monthly IV infusion medication treatments, as well as for cookbooks in the kitchen.
Thanks @Avanders for hosting!
This was intriguing to read, but also disturbing.
This had really dark atmosphere, I love gothic books and this was mysterious from the first pages. I loved how secrets started to reveal themselves.
It was quite easy to guess what was happening and this could have been a bit more realistic but I still enjoyed.

The short review is: it was incredibly well written. And I hated it.
The longer review: the first 2/3 of this book is a pretty faithful, more modern Gothic tale, and then it takes a turn decidedly into horror.
Moreno-Garcia is amazing at crafting setting & mood, and I was unsettled the whole time I was reading her work.
It‘s difficult to explain: I never enjoyed what I was reading & yet I couldn‘t put it down.
“The parties at the Tuñóns‘ house always ended unquestionably late, and since the hosts enjoyed costume parties in particular, it was not unusual to see Chinas Poblanas with their folkloric skirts and ribbons in their hair arrive in the company of a harlequin or a cowboy.”

“You could spend a lifetime peering in forests and jungles and never see one tenth of nature's secrets.“
DIYed the backing onto this bookshelf and pretty pleased with how it turned out. Plus, more space for books!
What better way to spend a lazy Sunday?

I was all set with a gothic novel and coming from a different part of the world but started to get turned off when they decided to go with an English mansion, really? So stereotypical, give me some new creepy architecture!
Also the ending? 🍄🍄🍄? Really?
I think I like stories where you don't really know what the evil entity is, much scarier.

It‘s rare for me to get caught up so swiftly in a story that it‘s hard to put down. This was one of those stories. I loved the gothic atmosphere, the world setting and the mystery of what we may view as paranormal. I loved the authors take on the ouroboros and how it is betrayed in the story. I will never view the buzzing sound of bees the same ever again. If you enjoy a story that will keep you captivated until the very end, then this is for you!
Last day of maternity and I can honestly say I've never done this before - reading a book outside of a restaurant for lunch and enjoying the weirdly warm February weather.

I when I brought this to the counter at Arts and Letters bookstore in Granbury, Texas today, the booksellers were absolutely giddy with my selection. Apparently they all were captivated, creeped out, and couldn‘t put it down.
These were a few of the first covers that came to mind when I thought of favorites. I'm *definitely* drawn to books based on cover. I first picked up Nina Lacour's We Are Okay because of the cover.

Once again, I'm attempting the #Popsugar Reading Challenge! Here is a round-up of the challenge prompts I completed in January.
I have a few more that are currently work in progress, so maybe I have a chance of actually completing it this year. :)

My second book for #NewYearWhoDis was one I could not put down. I loved the protagonist and couldn‘t stand the antagonists (as it should be lol). The plot had me biting my nails and turning the pages with no concern for the time. The reason behind all the madness is not what you‘d think, and the conclusion wrapped everything up nicely. Thanks for the recommendation @IndoorDame ❤️ @monalyisha #NYWD22
♥I have to be honest I expected more but I don't deny that I liked and intrigued much of the story, only I didn't perceive the horror part. The ending, even if suitable, I found it hasty and confused. For the rest it helped me to get out of a probable reader block, it is not a story that will engage you, but with the right suspense. I appreciated the protagonist, she made the right choices in situations and decided, going against preconceptions.♥ ︎
Reserved this through my library last night and it was ready for me today! (even though the site said I was second in line) My next read for #NewYearWhoDis #NYWD22 Excited for this one! @IndoorDame @monalyisha
First, how can anyone get any reading done with THIS FACE staring at you??!!
Ok, so being on walks with a puppy, I was interrupted/distracted a lot. Still, I knew what was going on so I feel that says something about how it dragged, it felt like nothing "got anywhere." And I felt really no suspense, or horror, fright, etc.
And then it just got weird, and kind of confusing. More below ⬇️
Honestly, annoyed that this platform since a picture of Mexican Gothic did not populate with the search under the title.
Anyway, I struggled to complete the book simply because it seemed like it packed a lot of action in the beginning, however in the middle of book the paragraphs dragged a bit with filler sequencing by writing in two characters to get to the history of the house aka high place. 🐍💀🍄👻+📖📑🙅🏽♀️=🇲🇽🥀
Walking around with this fool today- who super enjoyed the snow but is still wary of strong winds (among other things). It's hard to listen to audiobooks when walking a puppy because you're constantly guiding them with voice commands and of course everyone oohs and aahs at just how cute he is. Lol.
The main character picks up this book to read and I haven't heard his book mentioned since 4th year undergrad, more than a decade ago! My copy of this book states it was first published in 1976 though, so I'm a little confused how someone in the 50s is reading it.
I‘m super late to the party but I really liked this. It‘s a gothic tale of a girl named Noemi in 1950‘s Mexico who is dispatched by her father to check on her cousin Catalina who lives in High House, a house in disrepair, high up on the hill, that one must take a windy road through the mist that ends by a cemetery to get to. This was wonderfully creepy. This is my 4th Moreno-Garcia book, and she always delivers a good solid story. A gothic pick!
Well that was a weird ending!
I feel like I'm the last one to read this as often as I see it on book lists and book tok. It wasn't as good as I was anticipating. But never would of imagined how it ended.😳
It was a slow burn with some odd twists. Interesting read!
A day late in posting this…thanks for the tag, @TheRiehlDeal !
1. I think it depends upon my mood. Sometimes, I want a book that is fast paced and moves along rather quickly. Other times, I love the slow meandering pace of the book, the slow burn.
2. This is such a good example of a slow burn. It‘s slow, really, really slow. But, when the action hits, it became such a page turner for me. Loved it!!

Wow I haven‘t read a good crazy horror ,gothic book in years it‘s twisted and unexpected ,the author was not only creative but there were deliberate points of colonialism and eugenics that are mind blowing 🤯
I enjoyed this, gothic horror is not my favorite-they tend to just move too slow for me-but I did enjoy this. I think Moreno-Garcia is becoming a new favorite author for me! 4⭐️
