Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse | Charlie Mackesy
249 posts | 227 read | 89 to read
From the revered British illustrator, a modern fable for all ages that explores life's universal lessons, featuring 100 color and black-and-white drawings."What do you want to be when you grow up?" asked the mole."Kind," said the boy.Charlie Mackesy offers inspiration and hope in uncertain times in this beautiful book based on his famous quartet of characters. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse explores their unlikely friendship and the poignant, universal lessons they learn together.Radiant with Mackesy's warmth and gentle wit, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse blends hand-written narrative with dozens of drawings, including some of his best-loved illustrations (including "Help," which has been shared over one million times) and new, never-before-seen material. A modern classic in the vein of The Tao of Pooh, The Alchemist, and The Giving Tree, this charmingly designed keepsake will be treasured for generations to come.

I can see this being of great comfort to a variety of readers. I loved the art style, the fluidity between more bare bones ink sketches and full colour painting. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 My trouble is the faint rumours that reached me that I was trying to avoid from the hype train blasting by had me thinking I was going to encounter a new children's classic, and this reads more like the perennially valuable, but not new, cliched advice one finds in beginner philosophy/self-help books and the wall hanging plaque aisle in home decor shops, mixed with Christopher Robin's rare encounters with the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood, rather than a narrative. To each their own. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 3mo

I wasn't sure I would complete my yearly challenge in time, and I had this book on my mind so I have finally read it.

I don't think I have ever cried so much while reading. It's wholesome good and kind.

Here‘s my review for a book I just finished. I‘ve been bailing on books all month because I haven‘t enjoyed them but I finally finished a book. This audiobook was only 1 hour long. I was beginning to worry that I was falling into a reading slump because of not finishing anything. However, I know that I can take a break from reading and focus on other hobbies if I need to and the books will still be there when I‘m ready to return to them.

I am giving this book to sooooo many people for Christmas this year. It is also my go-to gift for baby showers. It is a book to be savored, read only a page or two each day. Filled with simple, profound, uplifting, old-fashioned ideas on how to live a kind and caring life.

Made my final bookstore trip for the year today to pick up the two books from my Small Business Saturday order that weren‘t ready, and of course, grabbed a couple other books included this lovely companion book to Charlie Massey‘s animated story. Beautiful. I‘ve been considering this one for awhile and was inspired by @Kristin_Reads this morning to download both the ebook & audiobook to listen as I read. What an amazing experience proving once again a book will finally come to you at just the right time. This is brief. Don‘t pass it by. Be inspired this holiday season and every day to be kinder with yourself & others. This may provide the quiet moment you need amidst the hustle & bustle.

Kristin_Reads I‘m so glad you liked it! Isn‘t it delightful?! (PS I didn‘t know there was another Krist(e)n Reads here with same name just spelled differently)! 1y

On the advice of another Litsy reader, I listened to this one; it‘s delightful, with music and nature sounds and bonus commentary from the author. 🎧✨

This is Winnie The Pooh for the modern age, aimed at both adults and children. I read a Litsy review that suggested listening to the audiobook while reading this. I wish I remembered who‘s so I could thank them cause it was definitely the right call! The audiobook was narrated by the writer/illustrator, written partly as an accessibility aide for people who can‘t see the pictures or can‘t read the words. The result is that you get some of his 👇🏼

IndoorDame thoughts as an artist mixed in, and he almost becomes a 5th character
hovering out of view as he narrates his illustrations, describes his characters moving from one illustration to the next, and occasionally slips in some of their thoughts or motivations that don‘t appear in the actual text.

I did the #audiobook of this because it said there was music. And the author describes some of the pictures with extra background info. And tries not to laugh when he does the mole. It's actually quite enjoyable. I would recommend it. It's only about an hour.

Is this considered a children's book? I think it is an every-age book. This touches on important concepts like friendship, loneliness, the purpose of life, who we are, and working through challenges. The illustrations are beautiful and the hand-written text is unique.

If I had to explain the feeling of this book, it is like a long hug with a loved one or a warm cup of cocoa.

Mitch It‘s going to be a TV adaptation for Christmas I believe! 1y
