I Let You Go
I Let You Go | Clare Mackintosh
The next blockbuster thriller for those who loved The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl...a novel with "an astonishing intensity that drags you in and nevereverlets you go." (Daily Mail, UK) On a rainy afternoon, a mother's life is shattered as her son slips from her grip and runs into the street . . . I Let You Go follows Jenna Gray as she moves to a ramshackle cottage on the remote Welsh coast, trying to escape the memory of the car accident that plays again and again in her mind and desperate to heal from the loss of her child and the rest of her painful past. At the same time, the novel tracks the pair of Bristol police investigators trying to get to the bottom of this hit-and-run. As they chase down one hopeless lead after another, they find themselves as drawn to each other as they are to the frustrating, twist-filled case before them. Elizabeth Haynes, author of Into the Darkest Corner, says, I read I Let You Go in two sittings; it made me cry (at least twice), made me gasp out loud (once), and above all made me wish I'd written it . . . a stellar achievement. *Peter James, author of Want You Dead

THRILLER - MYSTERY

Two minutes sooner, two minutes later....it would have made a difference.

Two minutes sooner, two minutes later....it would have saved the horrible pain.

Two minutes sooner, two minutes later....it would have saved Jacob's life.

I LET YOU GO takes off like a speeding train and doesn't stop with the suspense until the last page.

Book 83

I listened to I Let You Go, another epic thriller with unanticipated twists, by Clare Mackintosh. A young boy dies when he runs into the road after his mother lets go of his hand. A mother hopes to evade her trauma by starting over. The suspense and unexpected extend throughout the novel. Mackintosh is excellent author of her genre. 4 stars

Started off slow to medium pacer and then the plot twists and turns so I couldn‘t put it down. Told in different POV‘s in such a way that we don‘t always know who is talking. A boy has been killed in a hit and run accident. The police have no clues for a long time and then the “truths” come out layer by layer. Great character development, vivid imagery, not for the faint of heart.

The story here had potential, but it ended up being a fairly average thriller. The big twist was pretty predictable and there were several side plots that went nowhere.

MacIntosh writes in a way that causes visceral reactions. My emotions were running rampant during this book. It really should come with a warning; I almost threw my phone! That being said, the 🤯 twists that everyone told me about? I figured them out. Even before I knew there were more I was thinking of twists because the previous ones were just ...okay. So that gets a lacklustre meh from me, but the storyline was harsh, and emotional.

It's been awhile since I've read a thriller & Mackintosh's has been included on numerous lists of thrillers featuring the best twists. In typical thriller fashion there are multiple twists, but I'd say that I Let You Go features 2 major twists. I partially figured both out in advance, but still managed to be a bit surprised at the end. A 5 year old boy is killed in a hit & run accident in Bristol leaving behind a grieving mother & a tenacious👇

vivastory team of investigators as they try to solve this crime. There were some great descriptive scenes in a seaside caravan park in Wales & the plot never lagged. Wades into horror adjacent territory towards the end in terms of violence. Not the greatest thriller, but I read it in a day. (edited) 3y

I'm 220 pages in & I figured out the first twist before it was revealed. I think I've figured out the next big twist...🕵️‍♂️
ETA: I still have a bit over 100 pages, but my theory is wrong 😂
ETA 2: I now have 60 pages left. I have a new theory, partially based on an old theory...🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♂️

I know I‘m in the minority but I thought this book was very mediocre, full of flat characters and cliches. I can‘t say more about the things I disliked without spoilers, and this is a book it‘s best to go into blind. It was a quick read for the beach.

1)a- I've dyed my hair every color except black and green
b- I have a vocal range from 1st Soprano all the way to tenor
c- When speaking to people with accents I (unintentionally) mimic it back after a few minutes
2) Catcher in the Rye. Seriously thought my English teacher hated me with how slowly we worked through it, and I just hated it so bad.
3)Yes! Jenny Lawson & Grace Helbig
4)Probs too cold, you can always layer

Alora Thank you for playing!! 💙💙 is the lie that you unintentionally mimic peoples accents?! Lol 4y
AprilMae @Alora no its the vocal range. I have the high notes (definitely a 1st Soprano) but I bottom out in the alto range! I've actually been told I collect accents lol 4y

This psychological-thriller kicks off with a rain-soaked road accident that sets the book‘s events into motion.

This is one of my favorites from this genre (a genre that I have a real feeling of ennui with at the mo!) The characters are well-developed, it has a really tense ominous feeling throughout, and a good couple of twists.

Cinfhen This was such a fantastic book!!!!! The author never really recaptured the magic with her follow up novels 😬 5y

This book will make you angry, broke your heart and make you angry again. The ending was nothing like the first few pages of the book. I felt like I was reading a different story but it all made sense after part 1.

This book was a rollercoaster of a read and one I highly recommend.
