Yeehaw 🤠 Starting my read-along to “conquer a classic” with From the Front Porch podcast. My copy of the book should be into my Indie bookstore on Monday. It‘s a good thing because the library said I can‘t keep this one forever, but I sure do love how worn in it is… 🤗

Suet624 I‘ve read this one three times. I absolutely love it. 2mo

Just swung by the bookstore today and found these two gems. Steinbeck I love already, but never heard of this obscure piece, I also thought I would dabble in Western novels and thought this would be a good one to test the genre.

Leftcoastzen Way more than a western, and a favorite of mine. 6mo

I wasn't sure this would be for me, but I realised already at the first sentence, that it absolutely would be. It's a mammoth of a book, and it isn't a page too long. This will definitely be one of my top reads of the year, and I predict that years from now I'll still consider it a favourite.
And since pictures aren't working, the first sentence goes: When Augustus came out on the porch the blue pigs were eating a rattlesnake - not a very big one.

AmyG I don‘t enjoy westerns. I absolutely loved this book. 🤣 8mo

#twofortuesday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) This is my modus operandi. I‘m a very slow reader so very rarely do I immediately read a book I‘ve just bought or received as a gift

2) Tagged. I‘ve had it since high school, because most books I read then were chunksters. The print date was 1986, the year I graduated. It‘s moved with me a few times. So glad I finally read it because it leaped into my top 10 favorites!

Finished this #ChunksterChallenge2021 read. It‘s a pick with reservations. Needs editing, IMO. It took nearly 450 pages before I was fully invested. That‘s way too much time. I get that McMurtry was aiming for a sweeping epic, but the scope was too wide for him to properly wrap his arms around because some of the storylines petered out or felt unnecessary to the whole. Favorite characters: Gus and Clara.
Glad to have finally read this, though!

It‘s time to dive into this chunkster with fellow #chunksterchallenge2021 fans @GinaKButler and @CoverToCoverGirl ! I‘ve never read it, and have been looking forward to it. Although the mention of a rattlesnake in the very first sentence is making me cringe (person with a major snake phobia over here 👋🏼). 😖😬

wanderinglynn Such a great epic story. Enjoy! 2y
Graywacke Enjoy! A terrific book to get lost in. 2y
Amiable @wanderinglynn @graywacke Does the snake theme continue past chapter one? Inquiring (and phobic) minds want to know ... 2y
See All 14 Comments
Graywacke @Amiable there are definitely snakes in the first quarter or so. But I don‘t think it should discourage you. Just an uncomfortable section. 2y
Amiable @Graywacke Thank you! Spiders and mice and crawly insects don't faze me in the least. But even the mention of snakes makes my skin crawl. 😩 I will soldier on in the pursuit of good literature, though. 😉 2y
Graywacke @Amiable thinking about this more. if this fear of snakes is something you‘re really seriously concerned about, i might suggest you don‘t read the book. The scene I remember is striking, and thinking about it now, i feel some responsibility to warn you of that. But if it‘s more like a small cringe kind of thing, like an Indiana Jones kind of thing, and you think you can soldier on, then read on, it‘s a terrific novel. 2y
Graywacke @Amiable (maybe Indiana Jones is a good meter. If you‘re able to watch Raiders of the Lost Arc you should be ok. 🙂) 2y
Amiable @Graywacke AHHH!! I absolutely cannot watch “Raiders of the Lost Ark!” I saw it when it came out in the theaters and was traumatized. No, no and hell no! Crap. (edited) 2y
Amiable Ugh. This is my father‘s favorite book. I‘m going to ask him what scene you are referencing and see what he thinks. Thank you for the heads up! 2y
Amiable @Graywacke OK, I talked to a family member who advised me that the scene you are referencing happens in chapter 35. I've marked that chapter with a bookmark, so when I get there I am going to proceed with caution and/or have my husband read it and summarize for me. Thank you SO MUCH for the trigger warning! I know that my phobia may seem excessive to others, but it's very real to me. So I am very grateful to you for mentioning it. 🙂 2y
Amiable @Graywacke And also? You understand why I live in the north where it's cold. 😃 2y
Graywacke @Amiable that‘s funny about living in the north. I‘m glad you asked and really happy you will still read the book. 2y

1. I think maybe 500 pages or more is a chunkster.
2. Lately more and more I listen to them on audiobook. It's a nice way to read them, but I also like to read and listen at the same time.

New books! Well, Lonesome Dove is new to me. Who is ready for Friday? July has not felt like summer this year, so much rain.

Blueberry Lonesome Dove is very good. 3y
Leftcoastzen Lonesome Dove is an all time favorite for me! 3y
Skeebies05 @Leftcoastzen @Blueberry I started it but had a little trouble getting into it. But it was only about 20 or 30 pages in. 3y
Blueberry I thought the first part when they are still at Lonesome Dove was the slowest part. 3y

Larry McMurtry‘s bookstore has been on my bucket list forever. So we drove literally all day to get to Archer City and arrived 30 minutes before it closed. Ok everyone, unless you want a lot of valuable westerns or books signed by McMurtry, just take it off your bucket list. The “valuable” books are kept in a small room with AC. All others in an annex without AC and in no order. It was almost 90F inside. And far fewer books than I expected. ⬇️

Texreader I did get myself one book, which was pricey but I‘m treating it as a birthday present to myself. It‘s in the car at our hotel right now so I‘ll have to post about it later. But this history lover is very excited about it. 3y
DrexEdit I'm sorry to hear that booked up is no longer the stuff of dreams. I went there years ago when the books took up 4 or 5 storefronts around the square. 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m happy you treated yourself!! 3y
marleed Oh my goodness. So I take it that the F in 90F is also a euphemism :). But I‘m happy you have one great book for the memory of the trip! 3y
