Wounded: A Novel | Percival Everett

Pickpick

“Wounded” is a compelling read. It‘s a quick one too. There‘s a lot happening in 207 pages.

By far one of the most consistently surprising single authors story collections read so far this year. Bad Dirt ranges from a gritty realism to a magical realism that truly works. I loved this linked collection and Proulx has a truly Dickensian knack for character names. I have been meaning to read Proulx for awhile and was not disappointed. Will definitely be reading more.

Lcsmcat She‘s a favorite of mine. If you want to stay out west try Close Range. But for something completely different, yet lots of fun, try 2w
Tamra Close Range is fantastic! 2w
Suet624 Shoot – I‘ve read a few of hers, but that was quite some time ago. You reminded me I should try finding more of her. 2w

vivastory @Tamra Adding to my TBR 🤘 2w
vivastory @Suet624 I loved her balance of outrage at environmental destruction with a sense of humor & all of the misfits in her work 2w
Suet624 Her misfits are definitely top notch. 1w

I read James last year and am reading more of Everett‘s books this month for #authoramonth. If this book of stories doesn‘t prove the versatility of Everett than nothing will. The stories are set in cold cowboy country. A man tries to save a girl surrounded by rattlers, an old woman rides off to what seems like heaven, and a father and daughter go on a quarrelsome hike but they bond over an unfortunate event. A mystery box is, well, mysterious. ⬇️

Texreader I‘m not a big fan of short stories. It‘s a personal thing because I am unable to get into them and if I don‘t read a whole story in one sitting, I inevitably forget what I‘d previously read and I have to start over! (It didn‘t help I was reading another book of short stories.) But when it comes to darned good writing and you cannot get enough of Percival Everett, then I recommend reading these stories a little at a time. (edited) 1mo

I‘m still reading The Trees (so good) by this author but getting close to the end so I‘ve checked out two more of his books from Libby. I may like Trees better than James, which I read last year. What an author!! #authoramonth @Soubhiville

TheKidUpstairs Trees is my favourite of his (of the ones I've read). 1mo
perfectsinner I just grabbed James from my library 😀 and idk what Trees is about, but I love them! So the title caught my eye. Hopefully i like James as much as others seem to and maybe I'll check out his other stuff, too. Happy reading 🤓 1mo
AmyG I really enjoyed Erasure. 1mo
Readerann I want to read everything this man has written! (Only read the 3 mentioned here so far.) 1mo
Deblovestoread Trees is my favorite so far as well. 1mo

I currently have a few books going, which is very strange considering years ago I used to be a book monogamist. It seems that the past few years I've occasionally had to reset my current reads, hibernating all but one or two. The problem I have lately is my job. I strongly believe in the importance of it & advocate for it, but at the end of the day I don't have the energy to continue making headway in the Lethem chunkster of a (cont)

vivastory novel I started over the weekend when I was well-rested and had the whole day in front of me. It seems that due to work expectations, I'm finding myself more & more building my tbr around what I need to do. I'm not reading anything I have no interest in, but I've noticed that my reading habits have shifted significantly the past few years. I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this? I tagged the Proulx, bc short form work has been (CONT) (edited) 2mo
vivastory a lifesaver in terms of keeping my reading life alive: poetry, essays, manga and short stories have all been a significant part of my reading life the past few years. There were many days/weeks when I was too tired to sink into a Rushdie, Wharton, Baldwin novel but I could certainly read a bizarre volume of PTSD Radio/Blood on the Tracksor get an adrenaline shot of a Bradbury/Matheson story (edited) 2mo
monalyisha I used to be a one book at a time reader, too, but my habits have definitely changed! Right now I'm reading 4 (usually, it's more like 3): 1 novel (print), 1 book of poems (print), 1 that's apparently classified as self-help/philosophy (print), & 1 fantasy novel (audiobook). Commuting was the game-changer for me. Once I started listening to audiobooks regularly, the floodgates opened. I still won't read two printed novels at once. 2mo

monalyisha I've also been gravitating towards nonfic this year -- way more than I normally do. I'm not sure if that has to do with my attention span or something else. It's been an overwhelming year thus far. 2mo
shortsarahrose I definitely have multiple books going and/or hibernated at a time. Some of it is that I sometimes read slowly but I get a lot of books from the library, so I don‘t finish them before they‘re due. So I return them and will later check them out again and cycle through several at a time this way. 2mo
shortsarahrose Also, I used to read a lot more nonfiction (especially 2016-22), but after taking a class on YA literature for my Masters in library science and then having a chronic illness flare up, I‘ve read more fiction, especially fantasy. 2mo
Reggie I‘m the opposite. I used to have a book stashed everywhere and juggled 3-5 at a time and now I refuse to read more than one at a time. And for the past year there I times I get home from work and sit in the car for like 15 minutes to decompress. It‘s crazy. I don‘t want to move for a while. 2mo
Branwen My reading habits have definitely changed over the years too! I used to set up a lot of reading lists and challenges, but now I'm solely a mood reader! 2mo
Centique Yes! I find I‘m struggling to read fiction or non fiction that is too close to contemporary concerns - i read enough news to need my other reading to be a break from that. So I‘m reading more historical (anything pre 2015 im counting!) and more sci fi I think. Short stories and rereads of MG books are appealing to me more too. 1mo

Nothing finished last week. I did DNF “Leave No Trace“.

Reading the newest Craig Johnson book and loving it so far.

Next up is an ILL loan of Western poetry-really looking forward to this one!

I'm butting up against some due dates that are not renewable, so I need to get through these quickly. Thankfully, those books are fairly short that are coming up.

Cranberry orange soda bread 😋 from the tagged book. Super easy, but don‘t expect it to be dessert sweet. My kids will wonder where the sugar is, same with scones. 🙃

Where Coyotes Howl | Sandra Dallas

I‘ve been on a Sandra Dallas kick these past couple of months, throughly enjoying her books about women on the prairie. I think she‘s a very underrated author so I will definitely be recommending her books to anyone interested in historical fiction based on life of pioneering women. I plan to read more of her works this year.
