Well, I did it! Yay! Thanks so much to @Librarybelle for hosting #readingUSA2019.

My 5 star reads are shown on the picture, in no particular order.

I read;

30 hard copy, of which I already owned 12
11 Kindle, of which I already owned 2
6 borrowed from the library
3 borrowed from Libby

I *really* enjoyed this challenge, found some new authors and read some books I would not have considered before. Looking forward to #readingeurope2020!

Laughterhp Yay!! Great job! 🎉 3w

Kaye Thanks guys. I kinda do herky jerky starts and stops. Hopefully it‘ll all even out by year‘s end ! (edited) 7mo
Samplergal You‘re kicking it! I still need Alabama and was actually thinking a re-read of TKAM might be in order. But this looks interesting. ❤️ Harper Lee 7mo
Kaye Thanks @samplergal. The only difficulty with this book is it‘s only available on Scribd. I don‘t know if you have it or not. I signed up for a free month just to read this book since no one else has it , not even amazon or audible. It‘s very good , not long , and free for 30 days on Scribd. 7mo
bullbunny Woo I am so excited to see these again! 7mo

AnneFindsJoy That‘s cool to know Kaye! I have Scribd and I didn‘t realize they had “originals” , taking a page from the Audible playbook ! 🙌 7mo

Trying to jump back on track with this challenge. I‘ve been reading , but most of my last few books have taken place in states I‘ve already used for my map. I have 2 books that I can add :
According to Kate by Chris Enss —. Arizona
Whiskey When We‘re Dry- author lives in Oregon

Librarybelle 👍 7mo

Forgot to add these 2 books to my map.
Kansas - And Every Word Is True
Ohio- Destiny Of the Republic ( using this for Ohio as part of the book took place there and that‘s where Pres. Garfield was from)

Librarybelle Looking good! 9mo
Kaye Thank you @librarybelle. Do you happen to have a list of everyone doing the challenge and who has how many states ? I thought it‘d be interesting to see how many states everyone has and which states they chose so far. 9mo
Librarybelle I do not have the list updated...you‘ve tagged most of the participants, but a few more have joined up. I‘ll make a point to work on updating the list and posting this weekend! I‘ve enjoyed seeing the maps everyone has been posting. 9mo

NatalieR Great job! 👏👏👏 9mo
Kaye Thanks @librarybelle. I didn‘t know if I had everyone tagged or not. Thanks in advance for your time. 9mo
Kaye Thank you @NatalieR 9mo
callielafleur Destiny of the Republic was fantastic. Made me so sad Garfield died so early, he might have done amazing things. He also would have hated the current situation. 😂 9mo
Addison_Reads Great job @kaye 👏 I always forget to tag others in my post. I'll try and remember next time. I've read 11/50 so far. AL, AK, CA, GA, LA, MA, MN, NC, OR, VT, WA. For all but 3 of my reads, both the setting and the author are from the state. I'm trying to do that with as many as possible. 9mo
Nute Fantastic! I know that I keep saying the same thing, but this truly is one of the coolest reading ventures to me. I‘m happy for everyone who is doing it and the progress they are making.🙌🏽 9mo
Kaye @callielafleur I know, he sounded like a wonderful man. I kept wondering what he may have done with his time in office. He‘d definitely not be happy about today‘s political situation. 9mo
Kaye @Addison_Reads Great job ! That‘s a good idea. I hope you can succeed with every state 👍🏼 9mo
Kaye Thank you @Nute . It‘s never too late to jump in. You could use the books you‘ve read so far this year as a start. 9mo
jessinikkip I keep failing at posting when a book meets a state! Ugh *headdesk* I keep feeling so far behind. Im about to steal the idea of printing a map and coloring it in to help me keep up LOL 9mo
Kaye @jessinikkip Yea it‘s hard to remember the states I‘ve done. That‘s why I started noting them on my post. I‘m not very organized about writing down what I read. 9mo
Marina_h Great job 👍I've been neglecting this challenge the last couple of weeks, but it's nice with some inspiration 9mo

bullbunny You just keep getting close to my state. Every time you post one of these.. I am like.. is it today!!? Nope but some day.. at least it's been touched XD 9mo
Kaye @bullbunny I don‘t know where you live, so it‘s a bit like playing darts. I‘ll throw more darts til I get closer. It it further north ? 9mo
Amiable What are you going to read for Connecticut? 9mo
bullbunny @kaye I am in the NW, you have hit South Dakota so you have touched a corner of Montana XD 9mo
gradcat Keep throwing darts...you‘ve gotten so close to mine...Louisiana! 9mo
Kaye @amiable. I‘m not sure yet. I don‘t pick my books out ahead of time. They sort of pick me. I find a true crime that sounds good, then hopefully match it to a state I need. There are quite a few in the New England area so I‘ll see which one gets my interest. 9mo
Kaye @bullbunny. Ok, I‘m guessing It is Montana ? I‘ll see what I can find. I‘m thinking of one but not positive that‘s the state is was set in. I‘ll check it out. 9mo
Kaye @gradcat. There have actually been a few down your way so that should be easy to hunt one up. Hopefully I can find one I haven‘t read yet. 9mo
bullbunny @kaye No rush, just waiting ^^ 9mo
Amiable For true crime in CT, you might like this one about Amy Archer-Gilligan, who ran a rooming house for the elderly and was convicted of killing them with arsenic. The play “Arsenic and Old Lace” was based on her story. (edited) 9mo
Amiable For a more recent crime story, there‘s also this one about the horrific home invasion murders in Cheshire. I still can‘t bring myself to read it because I live not that far from where it happened and I still sometimes have nightmares about what happened to the family. 9mo
Kaye Thank you @amiable. I thought I‘d read The Devil‘s Rooming House, but that was about another lady named , I think , Blanche Taylor Moore. I think it might be the same sort of cases. I‘ve seen documentaries on the one that happened near you. I honestly don‘t think I could read about that case. Those were some of the sickest people I‘ve ever heard of, and what that poor family must‘ve endured was so horrid. I feel so sorry for the dad / husband. 9mo
gradcat If you like true crime, perhaps you‘d like the tagged book...just a suggestion! 😊 9mo
Kaye Thank you @gradcat. I have that on audio but it just wasn‘t clicking fir me. Maybe I‘ll try it on Kindle and see if it works for me. 9mo
gradcat I‘m in a similar place with it. I was reading it, then I stopped to read something else, and I‘ve never gotten back to it. I, too, have to try it again...but wait—there‘s another book I remember from a couple years back... 9mo
Kaye Thanks @gradcat I‘ve heard of that one. Love the title. Maybe I‘ll take a look at it. 9mo
gradcat If memory serves, the novel is a riff on a crime that actually happened to a friend of the author‘s, M. O. Walsh. 9mo
Kaye That‘s interesting ! I thought it was strictly fiction. I like books based on true events. @gradcat 9mo
gradcat @kaye I think I‘m right, but please forgive me if I‘m mistaken. 🙏 9mo
Kaye No worries , @gradcat. It‘s sometimes hard to keep all the books straight, isn‘t it ? 😊 9mo
gradcat Indeed it is! 9mo

Leftcoastzen Nathan Coulter is one of my favorite books ever. (edited) 11mo
Kaye @Leftcoastzen That‘s great ! It‘s such a restful book to listen to. 11mo
Kaye @bullbunny. I don‘t choose ahead of time. I like to just see what I stumble across. It makes it more of a fun contest than a restricted reading list. I‘m not good at those. 11mo
bullbunny @kaye Same I am a mood reader myself. Not wanting to know ahead of time. Just curious when the time comes ^^ 11mo
Kaye I don‘t even pick the states ahead of time. I tried doing that twice and didn‘t want to do it at all . Im not sure I‘ll finish, because at some point, it‘s going to get a lot more restricted as to books and states. I‘ll do it til it‘s not fun. 😊. @bullbunny (edited) 11mo

Trashcanman Delaware is going to be hard I imagine. 11mo
Samplergal Look at Laura Lippman for Delaware. Sunburn was set in Delaware. 11mo

Trashcanman @kaye ohhhh NF for all 50.That would be cool 11mo
Kaye That‘s all I can read at the moment so sticking with it til I get burnt out , then back to fiction. @Trashcanman 11mo
Trashcanman @kaye I wish you the best! You having a party for your birthday? 11mo
Samplergal I think this is the one about the Capano case. I may be wrong. I used to work with a teacher whose husband worked with him. (edited) 11mo
Kaye Thanks @Trashcanman No, we don‘t celebrate holidays. I will buy myself a cake though. 11mo
Trashcanman @kaye How I'd know. 🤗 11mo
Kaye Thanks @Samplergal I think I read that but it‘s been so many years I don‘t remember it so I may pick that . Thank you for the suggestion. 🌷 11mo

Pamwurtzler @kaye Nice work! And @Samplergal thanks for the tip on Delaware! 11mo
jessinikkip Oh wow, nice work! 11mo
squirrelbrain All NF, didn‘t realise you were doing that! Did you note down Janesville? 11mo
Kaye @squirrelbrain Oh no, sorry I forgot. I‘ll mark it down. I haven‘t really mapped out any books or order. I just choose the next book trying to fit it into a state I don‘t have. It hasn‘t been hard yet but might get harder as the states narrow down. (edited) 11mo

Repost. I found this post from @MinDea , I believe, from a year ago. The clickable link tells you the most famous book for each state. For those doing the #ReadingtheUSA2019, this may come in handy.

Here‘s another list I found.

BarbaraBB Thanks, this might come in handy! 11mo
Redwritinghood I have a couple for my state of Connecticut that are more current. 11mo
See All 8 Comments
Kaye Thanks @Redwritinghood I remember looking at the list last year but don‘t remember much about what books were listed. I‘ve got my next couple figured out so I won‘t need ideas yet. 11mo
Susanita Hmmm I didn‘t really care for 11mo
Kaye @Susanita I‘ve read a couple of Anne Tyler‘s and haven‘t found any that I thought were terrific. Accidental Tourist was ok. (edited) 11mo
Reggie Kaye, for New Mexico, please read Face of an Angel by Denise Chavez or Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. I‘ve never heard of that book they say is our most popular. Which means nothing. (edited) 11mo
Kaye I‘ll look them up, @Reggie. and see how they sound. These days I read lots more nonfiction , so I‘m not sure what either are about. I‘ve heard of the second one though. (edited) 11mo

North Carolina

Hhhhmmmmm..... where to head next ?

squirrelbrain It‘s a very neat arrangement of states at the moment! 11mo
Kaye Yep, scattered pretty evenly. I just go by whatever book strikes my fancy, then try to fit that with a state I need. I think it‘ll get more challenging the more I finish. We‘ll see @squirrelbrain 11mo

BarbaraBB So good, @kaye ! I am more like @squirrelbrain, I am trying to ‘capture‘ four states a month and still I think it will be hard work 😀😉 11mo

Kaye @BarbaraBB No worries, as I said, this probably won‘t last at this pace. I have to read a lot while in the mood because I have slumps where I read nothing. You guys will surely catch up with me and pass me by. (edited) 11mo

I just saw this challenge. It sounds like great fun! My finishes so far. #readingUSA2019 @libertybelle

Kaye Good job ! It‘s interesting to see which states people are choosing. The maps help I think. I‘m thinking as it goes on it‘ll become more challenging when we get to the last few states. Waddya think ? 11mo
Samplergal I think it‘s going to be very challenging. And surprising how many books are set in NY and Cali. Lol. I read a lot of UK authors so unless they fly into the Midwest, I‘m going to be out! 😂 11mo

PA book completed. A Murder in Paradise by Richard Gehman. 3 ⭐️.

#ReadingUSA2019. @Librarybelle

North Carolina.

Librarybelle Awesome! 11mo
Kaye @Pamwurtzler @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB Tagging others doing the same challenge. (edited) 11mo
4thhouseontheleft Did this take place in Paradise, PA? There is a tiny town in Lancaster County (Amish Country) called Paradise. It‘s right by Blue Balls and Intercourse. 😂😂😂 11mo
See All 17 Comments
Kaye Yes, it mentioned Paradise, which the author called a township ? I think was the word he used, which I took to mean a part of a county. We have them here which is a rural area within a county. And yep, he also mentioned Intercourse ,BlueBall and Paradise, and that comments were made about the 3 areas in jokes. Since it was written so long ago, it didn‘t go into any more detail than that. Writing was very “proper” ,for lack of a better term. 1950s (edited) 11mo
Kaye @4thhouseontheleft Sorry, didn‘t have room to tag you above in the post. 👆🏼 11mo
4thhouseontheleft Yep, it is a township. When I was in middle school, we took a field trip to an Amish Farm. Imagine the jokes on that school bus as we drove through those townships! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I grew up 1/2 hr from that area. 11mo
Kaye It‘s always interesting when you read a book that took place near you. I always thought they had some odd choices for town names in that area . Any idea who named them and how they got those names ? @4thhouseontheleft 11mo
squirrelbrain 👍 Liking the coloured-in map - might have to steal that idea! 11mo
Kaye Hi 👋 @squirrelbrain Be my guest. I don‘t mind a bit. I do it sorta as a reminder to myself if what states to look for next. Right now I have a lot to fill in. 11mo
tracey38 You're really making a good trek through the country with your reading! 11mo
Kaye @tracey38 Thanks. I‘m taking the Meandering Route. I didn‘t really make a plan, just read a book, then tack it on the map. Gotta keep reading before a dry spell hits. 11mo
Avidreader25 Fun! I‘ve been reading the states for years and compiled a huge list of books for each state if you need any ideas... http://avidreader25.blogspot.com/p/reading-states.html?m=1 11mo
Kaye Thank you @Avidreader25 That‘ll be really helpful. Nice lists ! 11mo
4thhouseontheleft I think many of the towns were named after taverns. 11mo
Betty Kaye I want to send you a #truecrime set in Georgia if you haven‘t read it. Have you read this one? 11mo
Kaye Oh, I‘ve never heard of that one @Betty ! And I need that state. That‘d be great. Please let me know if I can pay for the book and shipping. Thank you. 🌹 11mo
Betty Oh NO pay! It‘s your birthday month. I‘ve placed the order on Amazon to come straight to you. Forgot to add my name to their note, so don‘t be puzzled when the package arrives. If you have no place to send it after you‘re done, you could send to me. I‘d like to re-read it. @kaye (edited) 11mo

BarbaraBB You‘re racing through! 11mo
Pamwurtzler Love the map! 11mo
Kaye @soubhiville, yes I like it because I can use either the setting or the author‘s location for each book, plus there‘s not a specified reading list. I think it‘ll get harder as I tick the states down. I may have a harder time finding books as I get more done. We shall see. 11mo
tjwill I love this idea! Doing the map with it is cool too! (edited) 11mo
Kaye Thanks @tjwill You can do it too if you‘d like. 11mo
Bklover You have been busy!!! 11mo
Kaye @Bklover Since I‘m on a roll, gotta keep rolling. I have occasional slumps where I don‘t read at all so I need to keep going while I‘m on a streak 😁 (edited) 11mo
Bklover I get it! My reading streaks tend to happen during the last part of the month when I want to get my book count up! Sue Klebold‘s book wiped me out and I‘m having trouble moving on. 11mo
Kaye That‘s one I‘ve had for a long time but cannot read it. I don‘t read the school shooting books. Those are tough. @Bklover 11mo
Bklover @kaye To be honest I kind of wish I‘d stayed away. 11mo
Kaye I might have an unpopular outlook but I feel just as sorry for the shooters as the kids who get injured or killed. They‘re obviously lacking in some area , be it mental health, bullying, adults aren‘t paying attention to them if they need to talk or need help. The whole thing is just so sad. @Bklover 11mo

Exbrarian How does this work? What constitutes representation for the state? Author, MC, bulk of plot? 11mo

tracey38 Nice! You're on your way across the states 11mo

2 purchase one postcard for each member who signs up.
3 mail all your postcards to me, I will pay postage to mail out completed packets

Trashcanman That sounds cool.. 2y
Kaye The most inexpensive way to mail your packet of postcards is to use a padded mailing envelope. The costs range on average of 3.50. Some have been a bit less. Please write your Litsy handle, an author from your state, and a book set in your state that you enjoyed. You will, in return, receive a postcard from each group member from all over the country ! I will pay postage to mail your packets back . Please email me at julieklabo @ gmail . com 2y
Kaye Thanks @Trashcanman 😁 2y

Kdgordon88 Sounds like a perfect way for me to do my first Litsy swap. Thanks, Kaye for coming up with this. I‘m from Oregon. 2y
GarthRanzz Like I said, I‘m in! Did you still need an email? 2y
Kaye @Kdgordon88 Sounds great. Glad to include you. Send me an email with your mailing address along with your Litsy name. Once I get everyone‘s info, I‘ll send out a last note about details again then we can get started , thanks. 😊 2y
Kaye @GarthRanzz Yes, anytime you get a chance if you can email me with your Litsy name and mailing address , I‘ll be ready tomorrow to get it set up and send out final instructions. Thank you. 😊 2y
GarthRanzz 👍 All set. 2y
Kaye Thanks @GarthRanzz , got it. Thanks 2y
MissAimz_55 Oh I wanted to let you know I sent out the postcards today. Sorry it was so delayed, was a bit difficult to find poat cards around me (shocking I know) and then I had to borrow a car but I got it out 💗 2y
Kaye Thanks so much for letting me know @MissAimz_55 . I‘m surprised i can find them here as we are certainly not located in a tourist zone unless you wanna see cows. One of the ladies found hers at Amazon and had them mailed straight here. I never thought to try that. Sorry you had trouble finding a ride also. I appreciate the extra effort and will contact you as soon as I get them. 😊 2y

I‘m looking for a few dedicated people to do a very low cost exchange with. I found these book maps from previous posters awhile ago. I‘m thinking it‘d be fun if you wanted to be a representative of your state, by filling out postcards with at least one popular author from your state, with one book you‘ve read from an author from your state. I think it‘d be fun to collect the postcards ( kinda like trading cards) from other Litsy people, CONT

Kaye CONT That way, we could try to collect Litsy signatures, state postcards, and names of new authors or books we get recommended. Amazon has several travel journal type notebooks, scrapbooks, or you could just collect them in a binder with picture sleeves in it. Just trying to see if there‘s any interest, before figuring out the best way to set it up. Thanks for considering. 2y
GarthRanzz You can count me in for representing Utah! I was actually trying to think of how to do something similar with just state postcards. I like your idea much better. 2y
LitLogophile Count me in! 2y

HighLadyoftheStacks I‘m in, this sounds super cool! 2y
Sarah83 Sounds pretty great.😍 2y
Kaye Thanks for your interest @GarthRanzz , @LitLogophile , @HighLadyoftheStacks , @Sarah83 👍 Will leave this up for maybe 24 hours or so, to see how many interested folks I can get, then we can go from there. Thank you all. (edited) 2y
BookishBlonde12 Sounds like fun! Would love to be the representative for DE. 2y
Kaye Thank you @BookishBlonde12 . I‘d be honored to have a representative of your state. 👍 2y
Aloisi_tribe I‘ll do it if you don‘t have somebody from Texas yet. 2y
Lcsmcat I‘m in if you need NC. 2y
LibrarianRyan Punt me in, as long as I don't have to read the book pictured from Illinois. 2y
Kaye Ok, I‘ll add @Aloisi_tribe , @Lcsmcat also..Thank you. We can have multiples per state for f others want to join, too. Not limited to only one a state , but it‘d be great to have from as many states as possible. 👍 2y
Kaye Thank you @librarianryan. This exchange won‘t have any required reading at all. I‘m guessing the book mentioned for your state doesn‘t tickle your fancy ?😁 mine might not either. I honestly didn‘t see what it was, but if it‘s the one I‘m thinking of, I won‘t be reading mine either. 👍 2y
KellyHunsakerReads Colorado. Will we be sending postcards to every other person? 2y
Kaye @Hunsakermountain yes, it‘ll be done so that each member sending out will get the same number of postcards returned. Postcards here are either 2 or 3 for a dollar. You may be able to find them for less in your area. So no one will get stuck with paying for postcards that don‘t receive the exact number back. 2y
Aloisi_tribe @Kaye should the postcards have a picture of the author on them or just a picture related to your state or the book you‘re recommending? 2y
Kaye Not necessarily , unless you find one you want to use in particular. It‘s not a requirement to have an author on the picture. That‘d be kinda hard for some states. Any postcards of your state will be fine. 2y
TheBookHippie I'm in! 2y
Kaye Sounds great @TheBookHippie 👍. I just posted an update with further details. Glad to have you along. 2y
KellyHunsakerReads I sent an email. 2y
Kaye Thanks @Hunsakermountain Got your first email. When you get a chance could you send me your mailing address ? Thanks you. 2y

Check out the article here: http://www.businessinsider.com/famous-book-set-in-every-state-2016-4?utm_source=...

Fun article. What is your state's most famous book?

RaimeyGallant Cool! 2y
Amie I love lists like this. I've never even heard of my state's (Ohio) book. I would have guessed Beloved for Ohio. 2y
Alfoster Well dang! Love me some George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men!😍 2y

I loved the illustrations in this book as well as the variety of facts & information! It was really cool that there were so many authors represented, but also important people & events in sports, arts, & science. I also appreciated the diversity & the focus on Native cultures & people. Great book!

My hometown in Michigan wasn't mentioned, but the towns north (Muskegon) & south (Holland) were! This book is so much fun!

Suzze What town are you from? 3y

My daughter got this beautiful book as a Christmas gift from my parents. Sometimes it pays to not buy every amazing book you want! 😊 This purchase was made by my dad, without seeing it in person and not knowing I almost bought it THREE times!

BookishMarginalia Woohoo! (And it looks GORGEOUS!) 3y

tpixie Fun!! 1y
tpixie There are so many things to do. Many which overlap! 1y
Graciouswarriorprincess @tpixie. If you and @Bookworm83 visit the states, I would recommend doing this first as it gets more crowded as the day progresses! 1y
tpixie Ok!! 1y
tpixie What do they have at the station? 1y
Graciouswarriorprincess @tpixie. It‘s a lot of information about the state authors and little swag items such as bookmarks, pencils, literary posters, etc. I normally grab what I want and sort it out after the festival at night. 1y
Bookworm83 I live for swag! Thanks for this info, @Graciouswarriorprincess 😘 1y
Graciouswarriorprincess @Bookworm83 Tell the librarians at the state tables that you are a teacher. Sometimes they have extra things placed aside for teachers and librarians. This is one of my favorite things to do there. 1y
Bookworm83 Nice! Will do. How many authors did you end up hearing speak and getting a book signed by? I‘m trying to get my expectations in check since I know it will be packed. 1y
Graciouswarriorprincess @Bookworm83 @Tpixie. Are you available to Zoom today? I can talk to you both about game planning for the Book Festival 1y
Bookworm83 @tpixie I‘m around all day! 1y
tpixie @Graciouswarriorprincess @Bookworm83 I can‘t wait to talk and get the benefit of all your information! 1y
