National Poetry Month: Day 17! ❤📖

This is another one of my favorite Plath poems, Tulips. It's quite long, but here is the first part!⚘There's an audio recording of Plath reading this poem that you can find on YouTube. It's incredible. Listening to her read her poems is a sublime experience! 💕

TrishB I have a cassette of her reading some poems. It blew me away the first time I heard it! 9mo

Sharded in black, like beetles,
Frail as antique earthenwear
One breath might shiver to bits,
The old women creep out here
To sun on the rocks or prop
Themselves up against the wall
Whose stones keep a little heat.

Old Ladies' Home by Sylvia Plath

from “Insomniac”

“Over and over the old, granular movie
Exposes embarrassments--the mizzling days
Of childhood and adolescence, sticky with dreams,
Parental faces on tall stalks, alternately stern and tearful,
A garden of buggy rose that made him cry.
His forehead is bumpy as a sack of rocks.
Memories jostle each other for face-room like obsolete #film stars.”

From “Black Book in Rainy Weather”: this quote speaks so to #chronicillness, and so I illustrated it:

“With luck trekking stubborn through this season of fatigue, I shall patch together content sorts.
Miracles occur.
If you care to call these spasmodic tricks of radiance miracles.
The wait‘s begun again.
The long wait for the angel.
For that rare, random descent.”

Plath will always have a place in my heart for how brilliantly she uses words. She is able to create descriptions I could never have come up with. Her work gives me a place to be comfortable with my sadness. 4 out of 5 on GR.

“It is so beautiful, to have no attachments!
I am solitary as grass. What is it I miss?
Shall I ever find it, whatever it is?”

quote

The Collected Poems | Sylvia Plath
post image

I
When in good humour,
Give grass its green
Blazon sky blue, and endow the sun
With gold;
Yet, in my wintriest moods, I hold
Absolute power
To boycott color and forbid any flower
To be.

I
Know you appear
Vivid at my side,
Denying you sprang out of my head,
Claiming you feel
Love fiery enough to prove flesh real,
Though it's quite clear
All your beauty, all your wit, is a gift, my dear,
From me.

Literaryunicorn @monalyisha I just started reading my first Mary Oliver last week! I think it's love ❤️ 6y
monalyisha @Literaryunicorn Hooray! I first encountered her in college. I had to write a personal creed for a religion class and I used her line, "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" When I got it back my professor had enthusiastically scrawled in the margins, "I have this quote hanging in my bathroom!" I thought that was such a funny/weird place for it. So now, 10 years later, I have the quote hanging in *my* bathroom. 6y
Literaryunicorn @monalyisha That's a great story... something tells me I might end up with a quote from her on my wall as well! So far my favorite is the one about polar bears trying to survive on the melting ice floes from Red Bird - "That God had a plan, I have no doubt. But what if His plan was that we would do better?" ??? 6y
monalyisha @Literaryunicorn That's a good one! (Though potentially a bit of a bummer for room decor. 😆) 6y
