In Miracle Creek, author Angie Kim creates a whodunit with a side helping of the difficult realities of achieving the American Dream. Kim blends tragedy, kids with chronic illness, moms who will do anything to help them, teenage angst, and cultural pride. It‘s a delicate balancing act, and she does an admirable job.

Reviewsbylola This one was fascinating to me. One of my children is autistic, and some of the parents in the book really pissed me off. 5d
Cathythoughts Great review! I agree she does an admirable job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 5d

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Reviewsbylola From what I found, one of her kids is special needs and they used HBOT. She knows this situation from the inside. 4d
Reviewsbylola I didn‘t realize that! Fascinating—I just looked up and read some articles. I know nothing about HBOT and if my child had actual medical conditions that could be helped by it, I would certainly give it a shot. My dismay with the parents in the book is that that represent real parents often found in the autism world. Those that treat autism as a disease to be cured. Being neuro divergent is not a bad thing. Don‘t get me wrong, my child receives ⬇️ 4d
Reviewsbylola therapies such as speech and OT to help with autism related delays that she has, but the idea that autism should be cured is something I will never agree with. This is just a personal sticking point with me, and nothing against the author as I think that her depictions were honest portrayals. 4d
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Reviewsbylola I agree about neuro diversity. Although my experience is more broad chronic illness, I think there‘s an ongoing debate about how much to treat anything like this. For example, Lyme disease. Some people take three antibiotic pills. Others spend tens of thousands of out-of-pocket dollars on treatments with varying degrees of evidence based research. It‘s a choice, except of course that not everyone has that much $ to expend. 1d

A brutally honest autobiography about growing up gay, drug addiction, sex addiction and HIV, but still very funny - it‘s written exactly like he talks...

A FAB FIVE stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#quad-dipping with this one...

Also does anyone else match their bookmarks to their books? I felt sure that JVN would appreciate a turquoise tassel!

Fridameetslucy Yasss Queen:). I listened to it on audible (JVN reads his book.) Wait till you get to the last chapters ... I cried and at the same time was awed by his strength, generosity of spirit and empathy. I‘m especially happy that this book exists for lgbtq+ youth (there wasn‘t any equivalent decades ago) 2w

This morning: Bach and cozy reading. Fatigue has set in, but I am not fighting it, instead surrendering with words and stories and music. Thankful for books and Bach and comfortable, pain-friendly headphones. #bach #chronicillness #thanksgiving

This was so much fun: A steamy romance that is body-positive, featuring a woman of color who has a chronic illness. Wow.

After a near-death experience Chloe makes a list of goals to accomplish in an effort to “get a life.” When she enlists the help of her building‘s handyman (and talented artist) she finds more than she expects.

A treat for myself. And a gorgeous book cover to boot.
Sally is my soul sister. Her body doesn‘t work—her joints fall apart!—but she puts herself back together and keeps going. #ehlersdanlos sister-in-arms, pun intended.

Yesterday, I suffered a lot of fatigue, so I crashed with the Cirque du Soleil Beatles Love soundtrack and finished The Coldest Girl in Coldtown. It was my first #hollyblack but it will 🌟definitely🌟 not be my last! Reading such an immersive book is excellent medicine. 🧛‍♀️ #EDS #POTS #chronicillness #vampires #YA #horror #cirquedusoleil #beatles

This book ripped my heart out and stomped on it a few times before eventually putting it back only a little shattered. It was a quick read, but intense!!
