My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
The #1 internationally bestselling author of A Man Called Ove is “firmly in league with Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman” (Kirkus Reviews) in this “whimsical” (Publishers Weekly) novel about a young girl whose grandmother leaves behind a series of letters, sending her on a journey that brings to life a world of homespun fairy tales.Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy—as in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backman’s internationally bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.

CAUTION: Old woman with technology! This is my first Litsy post. I laughed...I cried...what‘s not to love? The quirky characters are endearing! Fredrik Backman is an amazing author! Joan Walker, narrator, voices this book wonderfully.

I‘ll regret this in the morning when the alarm goes off but I had to finish it. I don‘t know who I love more - Ove or Elsa. This story brought me to tears multiple times. I just wanted to hug Elsa and tell her that everything would be ok. This might be my favorite book this year.

I‘m only 80 pages in and I think I‘ve cried twice. Poor little Elsa 💔.

CoffeeNBooks I have a copy of this on my bookshelf, but I haven't read it yet. I love Backman's writing style, so I'm looking forward to reading it! 2w
Kaila-ann @CoffeeNBooks this is the second one of his that I‘ve read and he is quickly becoming a favorite. I have a feeling Elsa will persevere but in the beginning this poor kid is just getting it from all sides. I just want to hug her ❤️. 2w
CoffeeNBooks My favorite of his books is A Man Named Ove, and I also loved Britt-Marie was here. I read Beartown and Us Against You, and they were both good as well. 2w
Kaila-ann @CoffeeNBooks A Man Called Ove is the other one of his that I read and I absolutely loved it. I can‘t wait to get my hands on the others. He just makes you fall in love with the characters. 2w

Question for the Fredrik Backman fans! Is this the same as My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry? I found this book at the library sale and grabbed it, but also thought it was weird that the title was so similar to another one of his books.

I thought it might be a sequel, a reprint, or maybe it's a different country's version? Anybody know? 🤔

MrT That's the UK title version you're holding. It's the same book. 2w
rjsthumbelina I agree with @MrT . The synopses on Goodreads are the exact same page 2w

This was my third day sick with a cold, and my coworkers decided to take on extra themselves so I could stay home and rest. I spent the time I was awake finishing this book.

I love Fredrik Backman. His characters feel like my neighbors and friends. I adore Elsa, Wolfheart, and The Wurse.

This was exactly the kind of book I needed right now.
(And I think I‘m starting to feel better 🙂🤒)

Three years ago we lost my grandmother-in-law, in a moment of reflection I wrote this poem to all my lost grandmothers. I‘ve been so lucky to have such wonderful, strong female mentors in my life. I‘m even luckier to still have 2 grandmothers with me everyday.

‘Most likely they told her a whole lot of damned things she wasn't allowed to do, for a range of different reasons. But she damned well did them all the same. A few years after she was born they were still telling girls they couldn't vote in the bleeding elections, but now the girls do it all the same. That's damned well how you stand up to bastards who tell you what you can and and't do. You bloody do those things all the bloody same.‘

Though the story is told through the eyes of an almost 8 year old, you learn a lot about granny‘s past, adult lift through the current events that unfold. I like the slow reveal and complexity of the characters!

This arrived Friday as a part of the #LGPOG rounds! 🙂

I‘ve just started it, and while it‘s not as straightforward as ‘A Man Called Ove‘, it looks very promising: A little girl, Elsa and her grandmother share a special bond, imaginary worlds that appear to coping mechanisms or aides for Elsa.

irre It‘s my favorite Backman. 2mo
Lchnessmnstr I‘ve really enjoyed the how convoluted of it. Everything is there from the beginning but understanding all the parts comes as a slow peel back. I feel like I‘m growing up with Elsa. 2mo

Between a So-So and a Pick. Backman is an incredible story-teller, especially with characterization. While the fantasy aspects were clever, it didn‘t do it for me, might have been the audio format which made it hard to keep it straight. It was cute, but I didn‘t find myself as emotionally moved as I think the book was aiming for.

Another good one from Backman! It's not Beartown or Ove but it still has all the magic that I've come to expect. The audiobook was superb as well. Every child should have a superhero like Granny and a kingdom like Miamas. ❤️
