My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
The #1 internationally bestselling author of A Man Called Ove is firmly in league with Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman (Kirkus Reviews) in this whimsical (Publishers Weekly) novel about a young girl whose grandmother leaves behind a series of letters, sending her on a journey that brings to life a world of homespun fairy tales.Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazyas in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsas best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmothers stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsas grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsas greatest adventure begins. Her grandmothers instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other. My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You Shes Sorry is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backmans internationally bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.

What?!! There *is* a “monster“ in this one. {cue maniacal laugh}
----
Everyone deserves to have (at least) one person who sees and accepts them for exactly who they are. Elsa and Granny are exactly that for each other. So beautiful!

Highly recommended if you enjoy reading from a “very grown up for her age,“ almost-eight-year-old's POV including the way she blurs reality with fantasy.

flying_monkeys A couple reasons I liked Elsa: She carries a red felt-tip pen at all times, so she can right the grammar wrongs of the world as she encounters them. She reads only “quality literature“ some of which includes Spider-Man comics and the Harry Potter series. 3d
wanderinglynn I loved her idea of “quality literature.” I also approved of the red pen. 👍🏻👍🏻 3d

I'm so excited to read another Backman. ❤

The clock is the background was a present to my grandma when she married my grandpa in 1963. I inherited it when she died a little over 3 years ago. I know this book is going going to tug at my heartstrings bc my grandma was the best storyteller. She would tell me about her rendezvous with a count, trips to Mexico, growing up in the roaring 20s, etc. I miss her every day. ❤❤

“‘Only different people change the world,‘” Granny used to say. ‘No one normal has ever changed a crapping thing.‘”
“One day at a time. One dream at a time. And one could say it‘s right and one could say it‘s wrong. And probably both would be right. Because life is both complicated and simple. Which is why there are cookies.”

What a way to end a reading slump. I think I‘ve cried in every Backman book. I was extremely close to my grandmother who passed away last year, and though her personality was different than Elsa‘s Granny‘s, their love and relationship were the same.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

irre This is my favorite Backman book. 3w

4.5 ⭐️. I‘d read 2 of his novellas but this was my first full-length Fredrik Backman and it was excellent. A story of a girl and her grandma, of family & friendship, of the mistakes & muddled mess we make on this journey through life, and of setting things as right as they can be. Lovable characters despite their quirks. I‘ll definitely be reading more Backman.

Back in the Philly airport on my way to spend the weekend in MI with my dad. Had a long layover already and now the plane has been delayed almost an hour. I almost didn‘t bring a book. Started this one a few days ago. It was a bit slow at the beginning but is picking up now. I loved A Man Called Ove and this one may be almost as good. Might have to look for more of his books when I get home.

Crazeedi May I ask, is your mom still with you? I just now read your posts, my prayers are with you tonight. We sat with my sister in hospice in 2013, she was only 60, had Alzheimer's, but they were very good to us. Hugs 2mo
AmyK1 @crazeedi No, she isn‘t. She passed away on July 19th. Thank you for the prayers ❤️ 2mo
Crazeedi @AmyK1 I'm so sorry, my heart goes out to you. My mom is in heaven too, but there isnt a day goes by that I don't want to pick up the phone and talk to her, or go see her. I hope you find comfort, and that your dad is doing ok. 2mo

AmyK1 Thank you @Crazeedi. I know exactly how you feel. I want so much to be able to talk to her and see her again. And I know I will, one day. It‘s a comfort to know that she is no longer sick or in pain, even though we miss her desperately. My dad is doing okay. We are all trying to focus on all the good years we had, not on what cancer took away. 2mo
Crazeedi @AmyK1 it is a blessing to be out of pain, your mama is healthy and whole again! It's so hard for us though 💔 I lost my sister and then my brother 2 months later from cancer, I had a year I didn't even read a book, I realize now I was in a depression. Hugs, any time you need to talk email me crazeedi73@gmail.com 2mo
AmyK1 @crazeedi I‘m so sorry about your brother and sister. It‘s so hard to lose siblings, especially so close together. My sister passed away almost 5 years ago, also of cancer. She was only 37 😢💔 Same goes for you. My email is mattema3@gmail.com 2mo

Oh, you guys!

When I first started listening to this audiobook I had a hard time keeping up. I was confused on character's names, the names of various make believe lands and what was real and what was imaginary. I thought the print version would be easier to follow.

But then I got into the rhythm and fell in love. I cried while listening to the last few chapters because this story touched me so deeply.

I may need a hard copy to treasure...

Question for the Fredrik Backman fans! Is this the same as My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry? I found this book at the library sale and grabbed it, but also thought it was weird that the title was so similar to another one of his books.

I thought it might be a sequel, a reprint, or maybe it's a different country's version? Anybody know? 🤔

Three years ago we lost my grandmother-in-law, in a moment of reflection I wrote this poem to all my lost grandmothers. I‘ve been so lucky to have such wonderful, strong female mentors in my life. I‘m even luckier to still have 2 grandmothers with me everyday.

‘Most likely they told her a whole lot of damned things she wasn't allowed to do, for a range of different reasons. But she damned well did them all the same. A few years after she was born they were still telling girls they couldn't vote in the bleeding elections, but now the girls do it all the same. That's damned well how you stand up to bastards who tell you what you can and and't do. You bloody do those things all the bloody same.‘
