Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War
Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War | Mary Roach
Best-selling author Mary Roach explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected, and uninfested in the bizarre and extreme circumstances of war. Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversariespanic, exhaustion, heat, noiseand introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them. Mary Roach dodges hostile fire with the U.S. Marine Corps Paintball Team as part of a study on hearing loss and survivability in combat. She visits the fashion design studio of U.S. Army Natick Labs and learns why a zipper is a problem for a sniper. She visits a repurposed movie studio where amputee actors help prepare Marine Corps medics for the shock and gore of combat wounds. At Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti, in east Africa, we learn how diarrhea can be a threat to national security. Roach samples caffeinated meat, sniffs an archival sample of a World War II stink bomb, and stays up all night with the crew tending the missiles on the nuclear submarine USS Tennessee. She answers questions not found in any other book on the military: Why is DARPA interested in ducks? How is a wedding gown like a bomb suit? Why are shrimp more dangerous to sailors than sharks? Take a tour of duty with Roach, and youll never see our nations defenders in the same way again.

Enjoyed the alternative perspective to the #military.
Gives you a new appreciation of the factors our military members face that we often don't think about and rarely make an appearance in the press.
⚠️WARNING⚠️
There is quite a bit of graphic material that you may want to avoid if you're prone to queasiness.

Started reading this #Nonfiction research into how war works from a scientific perspective. Excellent read so far! For those of you who aren't into warfare or how #military strategy works, this book is for you! It's definitely for the research nerds!

A very interesting book on military science. I didn't care for all of the subjects (half are medical), but they were interesting. I learned a lot. Four out of five stars.

I am so thankful I stumbled across Mary Roach. I never would have thought I would enjoy a non fiction book about science...let alone one involving the military. But she has this way of making the most complicated subjects approachable, and so, so fascinating.
Roach gives readers a glimpse at the science and humanity behind the people who go to war, instead of the war itself.

I am a big fan of Mary Roach and had high hopes for this. Unfortunately, it is not my favorite of hers. I think the subject was too big to really do a thorough Mary Roach book. There were some very good large parts, but it was parts. I prefer her others but I still give this a pick.

Stiff continues to hold its place as my favorite Mary Roach book but Grunt was perfectly enjoyable. The different subjects didn't always flow as neatly or dive as deep as I would have liked but it was still an informative and entertaining read all around.

An interesting non fiction read about the science that goes into military materials and life. It was not about weapons, but about the things the military uses. I liked the friendly tone the book took and the way the author tried to make things lighter.

This is a book I never would have read if it hadn't been for my book club. 1- military stuff is not my fav. 2- I suck at science and have to work extra hard to follow discussions in that area. But, I really found this book very interesting. I even found myself smiling at memories of some of my most ridiculous moments in the Army. I learned lots of new things and had some fun discussions with my husband who is (said with love) a science nerd .

Mehso-so

So... I guess I just don't love Mary Roach. I read Spook, and was disappointed. I just finished this, for book club & for Pierce County Reads, and it just was so-so. Some chapters were better than others. And I did see her sense of humor come across. But there were a few chapters that I just couldn't get through.
I am going to see her speak at the end of the month. Maybe I'll finally get on the bandwagon then 🙂

Tamarity I liked her better in videos I found on YouTube than in print. 3y

This was my first Mary Roach book but will definitely not be my last! I listened via audiobook and learned a lot while having fun at the same time. I'd definitely recommend if you're looking to learn more about what goes into carrying on a war, some of the consequences you may not think of, and just some crazy stuff the Government has tried to develop in the name of war.
