I have 5 fourth graders this year. I‘ve not had fourth graders before - I do K4-2 and 9-12. On occasion I‘ve done 7&8 and 3rd but never fourth 😅🤷🏻‍♀️ SO off to library to get books to see if I can create something. Our library was revamped over COVID it looks quite lovely now.

This was a totally charming middle grade book that I know I didn't read when I was that age.

I totally get how Peter feels (I'm the oldest of five kids!) and how annoying but cute Fudge is.

I read this as part of the New York Public Library's 100 Great Children's Books and I am glad to have spent the day with Peter!

Trix and I started this together but she finished it herself during the initial periods of jet-lag (and failing to sleep before 10.30pm) at Disneyworld.
My first time reading one of Judy Blume‘s books for younger readers. It was good, but I prefer the books I grew up with (such as Deenie and Are You There God, It‘s Me Margaret). Fudge would have been a nightmare as a child or a brother. Crazy name though, so who could really blame him?

One of my favorite childhood books. Banned for unnecessary cruelty toward turtles. Because the main character‘s little brother eats a turtle.

Today's #jumpstart2021 prompt was #bookthatstartedyourreadingobsession. For me it was more an author, Judy Blume. I remember just loving the Fudge books so much. But I read anything I could get my hands on, and if I didn't have books, I'd read cereal boxes. Now that I have another little, who seems to love books (and cereal) as much as his mommy, I think I'm going to seek out this series for him when he's a tad older.

Day 15 - #JudyBlume

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, New Jersey, making up stories inside her head. She has spent her adult years in many places, doing the same thing, only now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults as well as children will recognize such Blume titles as: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Superfudge; Blubber; Just As Long As We're Together; and Forever. Wifey, Smart Women, and her latest, Summer Sisters.

A big read aloud hit! My 8 year old totally related to Peter and his frustration and love for his pesky little brother Fudge. Fudge reminded him a lot of his little sister who has a tendency to make some giant messes. We laughed a lot together reading this and it was such a fun one to share. Pic of my little Fudge in a peaceful moment.

Each of these books about the incomparable Hatcher #brothers were such an important part of my childhood reading life. Thank you, thank you, Judy Blume! #MagicalMay

I know I read this in elementary school but didn‘t remember anything about it. Probably doesn‘t help that it was 37ish years ago 😂

I recently reread this Judy Blume classic for the first time since elementary school. The only plot point I remembered was about poor Peter‘s pet turtle. Sometimes a #NonhumanCharacter can make a strong impression. #AuldLangReads

I have such strong memories of my third grade teacher reading this series to our class during our after lunch book time. I loved it! I reread it for a book challenge and so enjoyed it. Poor Peter! I still sympathize with his life as a big brother, even though I‘m not an oldest kid.

1. All of the re-reading I did in 2019 was children's books (and a couple middle grade books) I read with my daughter. The most memorable was an old favorite of mine: Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.

2. My favorite December read: The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter by Hazel Gaynor. I love Gaynor's writing and the way her words breathe life into her characters and the setting.

Hour30. Middle grade is my jam. I've always loved it and this year I've read quite a bit of it. I enjoy YA as well but I get picky with what YA I'll read. Here are a couple of pics sampling my MG and YA books.

I used to love this series when I was in elementary school! I think this is a great book to let students read so they can connect and become interested in the series!

Contemporary Realistic Fiction
This book follows around 9 year old Peter Hatchers frustrations of his 2 1/2 year old brother. Fudge, the younger brothers does lots of things that annoy Peter and be always goes unpunished.

Everything scares him. Especially birthday parties. But he‘ll be fine. Won‘t you, Sam?

I loved Judy Blume when I was younger! I will definitely want her books in my classroom because she‘s an author that if you like one of her books you‘ll like all of them.

The title itself could even draw in some kids! What a great story of characters who are the same age as the readers. I think there‘s a wide audience who can connect with this book.

A friend of mine teaches fifth grade and has asked his family and friends to “mentor” one of his students. Giving them cards with words of encouragement and such. I‘m supposed to give them a book to open the first day of school.

Can I get some suggestions. Ones for either a boy or girl, I don‘t know the name of the child.

These are my oldest books, that I have personally owned, and my dearest childhood reads. I'm so glad my mom had saved these for me, such a treasure. I just wish I thought to save more of my childhood books.

An oldie but a goodie! Just read this with my nine year old. Had forgotten how enjoyable it is.

An old coworker is starting up a new podcast on June 26th (& every Tuesday thereafter) called The SSR Podcast, named after the loved Silent Sustained Reading hours in middle school, but updated with a new meaning - “Sh*t She Read”. She‘s going to discuss our favorite books from tween and teen days, including everything from The Babysitter‘s Club to Nancy Drew to Harry Potter. I‘m hoping there will be some Judy Blume!

I picked up this book at a book sale and at first my son didn‘t want to read it. We read it together and now he loves it. I had to get the follow-ups so he can read more about the antics of Fudge.

This kid made me thankful I was an only child until I was 11!!!! Fudge is a horror show and as a mom, I really feel for Peter. He's just expected to deal with all Fudge's drama and not get angry about it! I particularly liked the part when Peter talks about how to deal with getting mugged! There's 1970s NYC for you, though, isn't it?? A great story for kids and adults alike and I'm happy to revisit this one! #kidlitAtoZ

Clocked in 2 hours (almost) before crashing last night. Have my coffee and ready to put some time in this morning.

I read this book countless times as a kid. Reading it as an adult, I remember why it resonated so much. I was Peter. I had siblings who got away with doing kind of terrible things without any consequence. It was more frustrating to read this now, with kids of my own, because the way the parents fail to deal with Fudge‘s behavior is maddening. But Judy Blume writes realistic, flawed characters, and she was one of the first to do it for children.

Uh oh, folks, this mom is in TROUBLE! I finished reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to my son tonight, and I haven't gotten a copy of Superfudge yet! Cross your fingers that our local second-hand bookstore has one, because I told him we'd read it next, then forgot to order it! 😳

I had a blast from the past with this #audiobook this weekend. It's even better than I remembered it. It's never a dull moment with a little brother like Fudge.

So glad my mom saved my books from when I was a child. I was all about Judy Blume at age 10.

For Day 9 of #Riotgrams, the goal is to share a writer or character with my name. The most obvious name I share is my last name, which matches famed author Judy Blume's. This common last name was why my first novel Gidion's Hunt was originally released under a different title. My book was called Tales of a 10th Grade Vampire Hunter as a subtle nod to Judy's Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. (Con't in comments)
