Having read this book & Forche‘s memoir of San Salvador continuously - I don‘t know if I am really seeing a similar dreamlike quality or possibly nightmarish quality to both books because of the juxtaposition or because it is really there. But both are excellent.

I've heard so much about Hoffman but have never read any of her books until now. Yes there was more telling than showing in her writing, but she has a certain way w words that kept me captivated thru'out this entire book. I ❤️ all the characters here, Ava especially, & it was really tough saying g-bye when it ended. Full review on hookedonbookz.com

Needless to say, I've fallen under Hoffman's spell. Might read 'Practical Magic' after this 😊

All my CT and surrounding state Littens...RJ Julia has single tickets for Alice Hoffman! Im seriously considering it because Alice is one of my favorite writers! I couldnt do the whole weekend event (which sounded really fantastic) but now theres tickets for just the speaking event! Is anyone else planning on going?

KatieDid927 I guess Beatriz Williams is in East Lyme the same day too. My mom wanted me to come to town for it but I gotta stay in NY next weekend. Looks so cool tho, as does this! 2w

This is a pairing of The Golem and The Jinni and The Nightingale. Based in WWII, Germany and France, this novel tells the story of a few main characters. It‘s clear that Hoffman did her research, and I loved the creativity of a golem in the Holocaust, resistance fighters, and survival decisions and costs that were told. Good book!

It's been so long since I've read Alice Hoffman, I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed her writing. This new book is marvelous--a deft touch of the supernatural (which has always been a strong theme for Hoffman), a gripping story, sympathetic characters, and a fascinating glimpse of Jewish mysticism. Made me want to go back to Paul Wegener's 1920 film, The Golem.

QuintusMarcus Story revolves around a Jewish mother in Berlin who creates a Golem to protect her daughter on her journey to France. Not your typical scary, Frankenstein-y Golem, though, but one endowed with intelligence and language. Truly remarkable book, very thoughtful and enjoyable. 1mo

@aeeklund and I had the pleasure of attending the Alice Hoffman book event where she spoke about her new book, The World That We Knew. I grew up watching Practical Magic, a movie based on a book that she wrote, and it was a dream to have the opportunity to talk to her. Apparently, she is working on the third book now in the #practicalmagic series and I am so excited! #alicehoffman #bookevents #bookwormlife #theworldthatweknew

I wanted to read this because I love Alice Hoffman, but I was hesitant because I'm having a bit WWII/holocaust fatigue. It is hard to enjoy these books and yet an important part of history that shouldn't be forgotten. I think i would recommend this book highly to someone that has not read too many of these types of stories as it was well researched and had strong characters. Thank you #netgalley for review copy.

IvoryLunatic I think I had the same problem with it. I‘ve just read too many of these lately. 2mo

#7days7covers- Day 6

I thought I had read every type of WWII book but the magical realism here adds to the story in ways that doesn't detract from the overall serious nature. Hoffman highlights the cruelty & unfairness of the world, but also the beauty of humanity through great comraderie with friends, family, & strangers.

In stores today 9/24!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from #netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

I have mixed feelings about this one right now. Historical fiction is usually my favorite genre but I don‘t know if it‘s the story itself that isn‘t holding my interest or that I‘m just not in the right mood right now. I do skip back and forth between this one and another #arc because I can‘t seem to focus on anything right now. #netgalley

Out next week!!! For those who love the spiritual , mystical worlds that Alice Hoffman creates, you will not be disappointed. Set during the turbulent times of the Nazi regime‘s rise to power, we are introduced to a cast of valiant, heroic women who each must choose what they are willing to fight for. Survival won‘t be easy and the horrors they encounter are monstrous but even during the darkest moments magic & miracles exist.
#ARC #NetGalley

Tex2Flo Such a dilemna! I adore Hoffman's magical writing, but struggle to read yet another set around Nazi regime. (P.S. Hoffman will probably win.) 2mo
Cinfhen I hear you on the Holocaust trope but this IS Hoffman. The amount of research she‘s done and all the details she seamlessly weaves into the story makes it different. This is similar but not as good as The DoveKeepers @Tex2Flo 2mo

This was a solid historical fiction read. I will probably look up the references in the back to learn more about the children's home that was raided and several other events in France during the Holocaust period. There is a bit of magical realism. The story, however, revolves around several young people and their struggle to survive as well as help others survive. The writing is a bit prosaic but I enjoyed it.

This is hands down one of the best books I‘ve ever read. It‘s a beautiful story of love and loss with a little bit of magic thrown in for good measure. Books about the Holocaust seem to be all the rage lately, but this one is unlike any other I‘ve read. I am so incredibly thankful to NetGalley, Simon and Schuster, and the author for the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this book. It‘s absolute perfection. Five stars all the way.

THE WORLD THAT WE KNEW
BY ALICE HOFFMAN
RELEASED DATE- September 24,19
PUBLISHER- Simon & Shuster
Its 1941 and the Nazi's are invading Berlin. Hanni Kohn sends her daughter away to save her from the Nazi Regime. Ettie a rabbi's daughter runsaway from home to save herself from the Nazi Regime and Ava who is a Jewish Mystical creature created to keep Lea safe.

mandi1082 I loved this book. I usually do not pick up a book with magical realism because it's not for me but this only had a tad bit in it. The flow of the story worked so well for me that I finished it quickly. This story broke my heart over and over again into tiny little pieces. Some of the characters we meet and their back story oh my heart couldn't handle it. This story is written beautifully and wondered how the author was going to end it.

I have started to write this post about 10 times and simply cannot express the blend of tragedy and joy you will find in this book. Hoffman has taken the horrifying historical context of the Holocaust and distilled it into the stories of four women. It‘s about survival, disbelief, love, courage, and humanity. The best of the year for me. Image is a painting by Anthony Forster & what I imagine as one of the settings.

We meet some extraordinary characters that take us on an astonishing journey of love and loss, while demonstrating incredible courage and resilience. Paramount is a mother's love for her daughter and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child. All of this is sprinkled with Hoffman's signature magical realism. She educates and elevates her readers. Hoffman's writing transcends. It is elegant and haunting, and quite simply, stunning.

I have a strange relationship with Alice Hoffman‘s books. This is the 10th book I have read by her. When I look back at my star–ratings, I find that about half of those I thought were “just OK“ but the other half were “phenomenal“. The World That We Knew is a different kind of WWII book. In fact, I would consider this book to be historical/magical realism. It is rife with jewish mysticism, especially as it relates to the being called “the golem“.

Cinfhen I find that‘s true for me as well!! I love her HF but I‘m not so crazzy about her magical realism books. Although when it comes to her Jewish themed novels, she seems to get them right!!! Thanks for posting & sharing ❤️ 7mo

It‘s a WWII story, and so it was heartbreaking. It was beautiful and sad. It was similar to The Dovekeepers in ways - the focus was on the women. It would make a great YA crossover book, I think. Comes out in September.
