I finished this a few days ago, but it was only when Barbara posted the teaser for #booked2022 and I checked my last 2 prompts for #booked2021 that I realised I could use it for #jewishauthorormc.

I struggled with the first half, then it got better, then I hated the (non) ending. Couldn‘t decide whether to give it a pick or a so-so. 🤔 I‘m giving at a light pick as I think (hope) it will get better when we study it in a few weeks time.

Book 22 2021- The third in the series and although not my favorite still a very enjoyable read. I do love some metafiction and I really love a mystery so these are always a winner. Plus it gave me a reason to look up the tiny Chanel Island of Alderney and now I want to go there! See above photo! Listening to a Horowitz interview it seems that there will be 12 books in the series which I‘m very pleased about! #booked2021 #jewishauthorormc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When a mother needs to help her daughter flee Berlin during WWII she follows advice and turns to a Rabbi‘s family for assistance creating a Golem to protect her child when she cannot. It isn‘t the Rabbi who steps in to help but his own daughter who also wants to leave Germany. I will read anything that Hoffman writes and she definitely plucked at my heartstrings with this book.

Starting out in 1911 as the story of Greta, daughter of the Viennese branch of the Goldbaum family of bankers (explicitly inspired by the Rothschilds) & her arranged marriage to her cousin Albert of the British branch the book morphs into a story about financing & fighting WWI. It sets up interesting situations, both historical & character, then treats them in a disappointingly shallow manner. I found it unsatisfying.

CarolynM @Cinfhen Thank you😘 I think bailing was probably a good call, it didn't improve as it went on. 3y
CarolynM @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, it was a frustrating book. I've read a couple of others of hers that I've enjoyed. I think she was trying to cover too much ground. 3y

This is deep insight into one woman‘s life. She‘s lives with a few mental health diagnoses, struggles with chronic pain and nothing helps. In desperation, she tries tiny doses of LSD for 30 days. The writing is engaging. But I struggled with the evident and overwhelming privilege. If not for her place on the socio-economic spectrum, she‘d be in jail.

Tamra That is sadly true. 3y
Cinfhen There‘s something about this author that rubs me the wrong way ... and she‘s married to Michael Chabon ( which should be a bonus but it‘s another thing that weirdly bugs me 🤷🏼‍♀️) 3y
Copwithabook Interesting. I just arrested a guy last week for giving LSD to his teenage daughter. He said he read on the internet that it would help her with depression and anxiety 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I haven‘t read her other books, and won‘t likely do so. But this topic intrigued me and it was an Audible daily deal a while ago. So ... I figured I‘d try it. She‘s funny and seems aware of her privilege, but it still was an itch I felt she never really scratched. And FWIW, she‘s Jewish in a cultural sense but not an observant one. So I feel like I kinda cheated with the prompt. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Copwithabook Huh — probably pretty stupid of him. There‘s another book that is much more scientific about the use of psychedelics for mental health issues, in case you‘re curious. 3y
Cinfhen Nope, she‘s jewish /totally not a cheat 😘 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Thanks. 😘 Been thinking about you a lot, my friend. Hope the situation over there improves soon. 🤗 3y
Cinfhen Thanks, Barb xx it‘s been intense- word is ceasefire is in the works 🙏🏻❣️ 3y

A beautifully written book (from the author of The Trauma Cleaner) about how we make sense of the world we live in and our place in it. It focuses on the lives of 6 people who come at things with VERY different beliefs, and I was moved by some of the stories and grumpy and challenged by some others! But I loved it for that - an antidote to the echo chamber. Great read.

Using for #JewishAuthorOrMC #Booked2021

JennyM @LapReader me too! I get excited when it arrives each month 📚 Hope you are keeping well and weren‘t affected by the floods x 3y

JennyM @LapReader oh no. That must have been tricky with the kids with no power. Glad you‘re ok now. We had some very minor local flooding luckily. So sad to see after the bushfires. 3y
LeeRHarry Got this in my pile to read for Aussie April 😊 glad you weren‘t too affected by the flooding. 3y
BarbaraBB Sounds good. I was so impressed by The Trauma Cleaner! 3y
JennyM @BarbaraBB @LeeRHarry she is one heck of a writer! I would love her to write a novel - she has such a way with words and a thoughtful understanding of the human experience 3y
CarolynM I'm not sure if this is really my thing, but I have a copy from Well Read so I plan to give it a try. I'm encouraged that you liked it🙂 3y
CarolynM I love your new profile pic by the way😍 I suppose you changed it weeks ago and I've only just noticed😬🙄 3y
JennyM @CarolynM it‘s very well written. Some of the stories weren‘t as engaging, but I think she did an excellent job in weaving them together. I hope you enjoy it 🤞 And I‘ve only just changed my picture so you are on the ball 😃😘 3y
Jeg This book is on my TBR shelf. 3y
CarolynM Thinking of you in Brisbane 💕 Hope the 3 days will bring it back under control. 3y

A remarkably moving story about remembrance, pain, and grief, using a dual timeline to tell the story about a stolen painting and those connected to the painting. Glad I picked this one up for #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead ; while I know a little bit about artwork stolen from Jewish families, other aspects of the story, such as Kindertransport, were unfamiliar to me. How heartbreaking! #Booked2021 #JewishAuthorOrMC

In the 1940s a third of Baghdad‘s population was Jewish. In 2016, there was a population of 5.

This is an unusual graphic novel, closely based on the British-Iraqi-Jewish author‘s family history. Alongside the wordless graphics, there are short quotes on each page from family members (and some from internet friends) describing life before, during and after the Nazi influence of the 1930s/40s.

An affecting view of a completely different #Iraq,

A quick and easy listen! I laughed a lot, but if you‘re not a fan of Seinfeld, you may not like this, as it‘s kinda like one long stand-up routine. He shares some of his best material over his many decades in the business. If you‘re looking for a memoir, this is not it!

The Complete Stories | Clarice Lispector

Pickpick

There's something here for everyone, so while I didn't love all 85 of them, I liked enough to call it a pick. I did this on audio so each story has a different narrator than the last (7 people overall) which helped to audibly note the change of story if I zoned out on one or needed to skip through (which only happened a few times). Arranged chronologically, the stories' themes change as Lispecter ages and goes through life. I enjoyed most of ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The First Stories better than later ones, but other standouts were The Smallest Woman in the World, Brasilia, and The Body. The Burned Sinner and the Harmonious Angels was far from my favorite story but I'd be remiss if I didn't note its full cast that sounded like a church hymnal and was entertaining to hear.
