I did really enjoy this book, but there were a few plot points that seemed less than fully thought out, plus the main character was overly snarky sometimes, which dropped the rating somewhat (about 3.5 stars). It was a fun romp with a pretty detailed background world, and a super angsty romance (always a good time 😘). The MC is Heartless, meaning the she is a thrall of the witch that has her heart. She has to take the Prince's heart in order to ⬇️

rjsthumbelina prevent another war between the humans and witches! 4y
rjsthumbelina I read this for #OWLSmagicalreadathon for #ancientrunes (book with 'heart' in the title or a heart on the cover). Completed my OWLS prompts, only 2 days after the end of the readathon! 4y
rjsthumbelina Also, to show how much I really did enjoy it, I bought the sequel as an ebook the day before I finished this one! I knew I was gonna need to know what happened next 4y

Very different from the last women's fiction that I read, but no less good. Mostly, it's a fun romance centered around books and writing with good characters. But also, there are several subplots that have serious tones and big feelings attached. This made me laugh and it made me cry. Very good escapist fiction that made me forget the world and made me feel big feelings.

Read this for #OWLSmagicalreadathon, for #defenseagainstthedarkarts

LiteraryinLawrence I hadn‘t really considered reading this, but your review makes me think maybe I should! I don‘t typically read romance as a genre. But I did really like The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, and there were romances central to the plot. What do you think? 4y
rjsthumbelina @LiteraryinLititz I think if you have enjoyed those, then you may really like it! The romance is a central plot, but it isn't the only central plot. The sexy scenes don't overwhelm the plot either (there are only really 2). The relationships between all the characters are really well done, and the characters themselves are people I will miss! 4y
LiteraryinLawrence @rjsthumbelina Thanks! I‘m going to go for it! 4y
rjsthumbelina @LiteraryinLititz I'm excited to hear what you think! It's one of my new favorites of this year 4y

The World That We Knew | Alice Hoffman

Pickpick

As always, Alice never lets me down. Her lyrical writing is beautiful. Her historical aspects are always so well-researched. And her characters are so real and flawed, but lovable. She manages to be one of those authors that always gets right at the crux of what it means to be human, every time. The magical realism was wonderful and almost dream-like, more so than in some of her other books

Photo for evidence of how far I made it before giving up.

This just wasn't for me. The characters were not people I was attached to or wanted to know more about. The plot was not very developed, and I felt like I was always waiting for something to happen, but nothing was coming. It was fever dream-esque, but in the worst way for me. Her writing is beautiful, but there was no substance that I could connect to here.

rjsthumbelina I was supposed to be reading this for #divination for #OWLSmagicalreadathon (random number generated read off your TBR), but I think I'll get a new random never instead of continuing to slog through this one! Life's too short 4y

I thought the beginning was slow to get moving. The girls are seniors and all 4 best friends. One of them, we are told, will become the president of the US. But which one? I thought the struggles with family, adoption issues, and socioeconomic status were very well done. Also, the marginalization of people with physical disabilities, and handling of mental health issues.

rjsthumbelina However, I really wish the author would have gone harder for the racial issues that just peak out at the surface of the story sometimes. It was a 3 and a half stars for me, but would have been a high 4 if that had been included more in the story. I really liked the romances here as well. It was pretty cool too that the girls' hobbies didn't end up defining their future career paths 4y
rjsthumbelina Read this for the #BNYAbookclub, and also for #herbology for the #OWLSmagicalreadathon (title starts with an 'M') 4y
LiteraryinLawrence I really liked this one but your points make sense for sure. 4y
rjsthumbelina @LiteraryinLititz I enjoyed it, too, for the most part. I just thought that the beginning took too long to really start moving, and that the author really missed an opportunity to talk about racial issues once she had brought it up. It felt almost like those characters were marginalized from the story bc she didn't tackle that after briefly mentioning it 4y

Love the art but that‘s about it. The storyline was rather confusing and nothing was really explained coherently or in a logical way. I don‘t think there‘s a way for me to summarize what this is about because I don‘t really even know. There‘s a cliffhanger at the end but it falls really flat and just confused me even more. Not sure I‘ll continue on with this. Read for #owlsmagicalreadathon Care of Magical Creatures-animal with a beak on cover.

This was pretty mesmerizing and interesting, but I almost felt like it was missing something. I think it felt like I needed more background knowledge, which was I'm sure bc it's less than 60 pages long! I really liked Binti's character and the societal norms exploration that takes place within the context of a mini space opera. Will definitely continue the series.

I read this for #potions for the #OWLSmagicalreadathon (book under 150 pgs)

The beginning of this book was slow, but once the characters really started to form relationships, it got much better. I thought the interview format really worked to convey everyone's feelings for each other. The emotional connections between all of the characters were intense, in a good way. I enjoyed the portrayal of addiction, and the focus on the emotional loss to the characters bc of their addictions. 4 ⭐

rjsthumbelina I read this for the #charms prompt for #OWLSmagicalreadathon. (Book with a white cover) 4y

Ms. Marvel Vol. 8: Mecca | G. Willow Wilson

Pickpick

This series, man. Wilson perfectly combines the action of a Marvel story with social commentary EVERY TIME. This volume dealth with what makes someone the "hero" or the "villain," and if they're really that different. Also, religious differences and immigration are touched on. I love this series. This is no exception.

I read this for #transfiguration for the #OWLSmagicalreadathon

I didn't find this one quite as compelling as previous entries in the series - I think bc too much of the narrative consisted of characters' background stories. Nonetheless, I will definitely be continuing with the series. I have to know what happens!

I read this for my #astronomy read for the #OWLSmagicalreadathon
