Triptych: (Will Trent / Atlanta series 1) | Karin Slaughter
410 posts | 154 read | 2 reading | 68 to read
The first Will Trent novel, from the No. 1 Bestseller. When Atlanta police detective Michael Ormewood is called out to a murder scene at the notorious Grady Homes, he finds himself faced with one of the the most brutal killings of his career: Aleesha Monroe is found in the stairwell in a pool of her own blood, her body horribly mutilated. As a one-off killing it's shocking, but when it becomes clear that it's just the latest in a series of similar attacks, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are called in, and Michael is forced into working with Special Agent Will Trent of the Criminal Apprehension Team - a man he instinctively dislikes. Twenty-four hours later, the violence Michael sees around him every day explodes in his own back yard. And it seems the mystery behind Monroe's death is inextricably entangled with a past that refuses to stay buried ...

#BestMidYear22 Day 6: Slaughter's initial entry in her Will Trent series, published between the penultimate & the final book of the Grant Co series, shows how Slaughter has matured as a writer with her confident voice & intricate plotting. Immediately pulled in, per usual with Slaughter's novels, I inhaled this dark & twisted story. I haven't read the second book in the Trent series yet, but it's only due to too many books and not enough time.

CoverToCoverGirl Her books are the darkest I‘ve ever read. I cautiously recommend her to everyone. 1mo
vivastory @CoverToCoverGirl I'm always surprised when I meet a fellow Slaughter fan IRL. Very dark books 1mo

I‘m not familiar with this actor because I don‘t watch films/telly a lot. But this is not the Will Trent that lives in my head!!

jenniferw88 Agreed. I picture Laurence Fox, but wouldn't want him playing Will as he's a #anti-vaccer. 4mo
TrishB @jenniferw88 I think being an anti-vaccer is probably the least of his problems! He‘s not a very nice man is he. I don‘t know who I see explicitly but definitely someone a bit more nerdy if that makes sense! 4mo
jenniferw88 @TrishB no, he's not. It's a shame as I liked him in Lewis. Try to catch an episode of Hudson & Rex (it's on Alibi) - there's an actor there whose a bit 'nerdy'! 4mo

Liatrek I love this series but this guy not even close to the Will in my head😞 Hopefully they stay true to his character 4mo
5feet.of.fury ?!? Yeah I was thinking more of a Josh Holloway type. 😐 4mo

5feet.of.fury @TrishB Eric Winter is on the Rookie w/Nathan Fillion, he‘s a triathlete too, and Will is a marathoner. But really, any other person lol idk where they came up with this guy as being Will. I don‘t see it. 4mo

In the inaugural volume of the Will Trent series a woman is found brutally murdered in the stairwell of an apartment complex. GBI officer Will Trent is brought in to advise local PD & notices a potential connection to other recent crimes. Meanwhile, John a recently paroled murderer is trying to adjust to life on the outside when strange things start happening to him. A propulsive page turner, filled with surprises. Dark & twisted. Published 5👇

vivastory years after her debut work Blindsighted, I can see how she has grown as a writer. More ambitious & narratively complicated than the earlier installments in Grant Co (which I still love), I am eager to read more in this series. 6mo

what an opening story. Poor Will, he's been through absolute hell and yet he's determined to help others. I like that he has flaws but that he works hard not to be called out for them. His relationship with Angie is interesting and does justify things you see in later books. The plot itself is really clever and although you know early on who is behind it, i like how it all slowly comes together. I love Will even more so after this one. 5*

#scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter

This was twisted. I started reading Will Trent at “Undone” and heave read all the subsequent, this was an interesting trip back in time. The story of a serial rapist/murderer crossing decades, race, class, age boundaries with one telltale signature. Following Will, Det. Ornewood, an ex-con, and Vice cop Angie Polaski who finds herself caught in the middle as they seek out the killer.

Some of my current reads & a couple of library loans.

The only real “goal” I‘m setting for myself, other than to enjoy reading as much as possible, is ‘The Silent Patient‘ &🔖📕 ‘cause it‘s an inter-library loan that I‘ve been chomping at the bit for since last year.

Since I finished The Grant County series for #SeriesRead2021 I had to jump into the Will Trent ASAP.

This is an excellent start to another brutal Slaughter series full of unexpected twists and lots of dark, gritty actions. After reading other books by this author you'd think I'd be prepared for the violence, but Slaughter is a master of her craft and paints a very vividly sadistic image with her words.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

I am thoroughly impressed with the first installment of the Will Trent series. Slaughter knows exactly how to write a suspenseful thriller. I had been warned that Triptych was violent. I was not prepared for it to be so unrelentingly, brutally, and graphically violent. Mystery/thriller is my favorite genre. I get that a degree of violence is often part of the deal. Slaughter went to a wildly unreasonable extreme. This story could have been told with even more mystery/surprise (and better character and plot development) without the constant assault.

CBee I remember starting this and getting a bad feeling, so I stopped reading it 😳🤭 2y

This first in the Will Trent series has been on my list to read for quite some time. I waited for the #audiobook on #libby for ages. This is a typical Karin Slaughter read, but it was nice to see the origins of the characters I've come to know in later books. Grit and her trademark gore abound. Also, is anyone as they seem? #thriller

This is a very entertaining book. Its gritty, gory and fascinating. Will Trent, the main character is very unique, have not come across such a character in a long time. The story takes it time but once you are in it, it is very engaging. Triptych touches on every nightmare one could think of - prison life, drug abuse, rape, child abuse. The writer lets the horrors seep in, reveals secrets at the right time.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Onto the next one!!

rsteve388 It was okay... I listened to an abridged version which I didn't realize until after I read it I am sure the full version was better. I did enjoy how the story was narrated from different perspectives including the actual killers. 3y
See All 25 Comments
Clwojick @rsteve388 I jumped between the physical book and the audiobook, which I enjoyed well enough. I probably would‘ve enjoyed it more had I stuck to the physical book only, since I found the narrators female voice was a bit annoying lol. 3y
rsteve388 Yeah ugh that's the worst when you can't stand their voice. Ruins the story. :( 3y
Clwojick As for the story itself... In true #KarinSlaughter fashion, I knew it would be dark and gritty, as most of her other books are. I didn‘t find it as gritty as some of her other books, but it still had its moments that make my flinch. I love Will Trent, and found that myself sympathizing with him as the story progressed. 3y
Clwojick I also liked that she kind of gave away the killer early on in the book. The mystery isn‘t who‘s doing the crimes, but how and if they will get caught. 🙌🏻 3y
Sleepswithbooks I really enjoyed this book and now a new Karin Slaughter fan! 3y
Clwojick @Stacypatrice yes! I have a few more of her books on my shelf that are bling moved up on the list! 3y
Lizpixie I enjoyed it, it wasn‘t her best by a long shot, but it introduces Will & his diabolical wife Angie, which is its highlight. I didn‘t like Will at first, mainly because I loved Jeffrey so much, but he‘s grown on me💁🏻‍♀️ 3y
EadieB I've read all of Karin Slaughter's books. I think it's best if you start with the Grant County series before the Will Trent series as that's the beginning of the timeline for Sara and Jeffrey. Her last book, The Last Widow, I did not enjoy as much as it got too political but hopefully she won't keep the series going in that direction. 3y
Charityann I enjoyed this book. I hadn‘t heard of Karin Slaughter before, but now I‘ll read more of her stuff. 🎃 3y
Liatrek I‘m so glad this was our team buddy read because it introduced me to Karin Slaughter and this amazing series. I enjoyed the characters and the story. I really like her style of writing and also read the The Good Daughter. I can‘t wait to dive into the rest of the series😊🎃 3y
Clwojick @Lizpixie surprisingly enough, this was my first of her Will Trent books. ☺️ I can‘t wait to read on. 3y
Clwojick @EadieB Thanks for the suggestion! I‘ll keep that in mind. ☺️ 3y
Clwojick @Charityann I‘ll admit to reading more of her stand alone books, but I‘ll definitely be continuing with this series too. Some of the members in the group were talking about starting a #SlaughterBookClub ♥️♥️♥️ 3y
Clwojick @Liatrek woohoo! I‘m glad I chose a good one! I‘ve been familiar with the author for a while now, but I‘m happy to see that this event has introduced her to other. 🧡 3y
Bookwormjillk This book was more violent than what I would normally stick with, but the twists and turns kept me going. As someone mentioned above it was different knowing who the killer was but not how they‘ll be caught. I‘ll read more of this series but after reading this and Misery in one month I need a break from unplanned amputations for a while 🤪 3y
Sarahreadstoomuch I was really glad to read this, even if I didn‘t like how poorly all the ladies were characterized or the audiobook narrator. I‘ve never read books like this, and I‘m encouraged to try more. I did like the twists and some of the “mic drop” moments. 3y
FantasyChick Slaughter's been on my radar for a while now but I haven't had a chance to pick up one of the books yet. I'm glad I started with this one! I enjoyed the twists and I actually really like books that give away the killer from the beginning. The guessing to how they will get caught is exciting! I also really liked all the connections between the characters. Looking forward to continuing the series 3y
hes7 I‘ve only read a couple of Slaughter‘s books now, but I did not enjoy this one as much as the other. Will was probably the only character I liked, which made it hard to keep caring through the end of the book. It did have some good twists and surprising connections, though, that I appreciated. 3y
4thhouseontheleft I thought it was okay. I would have probably liked it more if I hadn‘t listened to the audiobook. The narrator was terrible, especially when doing the female characters. 3y
Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft You must have listened to the same audiobook as me! 😂 I totally agree with that. 3y
samantharoberts I loved the book! I completely agree with @Clwojick that it was cool to know the killer so early on in the book, because it actually was a huge shock to find out that the detective Michael was John‘s cousin Woody! I think if she waited until the end I would have figured it out myself and it wouldn‘t have had that same “shock” factor. I really found Angie irritating, to me she was the worst part about the book. Overall I loved it! 3y
4thhouseontheleft @clwojick Probably! His narration was so distracting! I definitely plan to read more in the series, but not on audio! 3y
